The identity of Prunusdielsiana (Rosaceae).

ABSTRACT: The valid publication date of Prunusdielsiana was found to be later than that of P.rufoides, which has been considered a synonym of P.dielsiana. Prunusdielsiana is therefore reduced to a synonym of P.rufoides, instead of the reverse. In addition, all previously named varieties of Prunusdielsiana, including var. abbreviata, var. conferta, and var. laxa, as well as P.carcharias are also listed as synonyms of P.rufoides in the present paper.

Project description:A new species of Lachemilla (Rosaceae), Lachemilla mexiquense D.F. Morales-B., from Mexico is described and illustrated. This species is similar to Lachemilla aphanoides by its tripartite leaves and glomerulate inflorescence with entirely glabrous flowers, but it differs by its stonoliferous habit, persistent basal leaves and basal stipules, and smaller flowers with a campanulate-elongate hypanthium and single carpel. A key to the species of Lachemilla in Mexico is provided.

Ribosome Inactivating Proteins from Rosaceae.

Project description:Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are widespread among higher plants of different taxonomic orders. In this study, we report on the RIP sequences found in the genome/transcriptome of several important Rosaceae species, including many economically important edible fruits such as apple, pear, peach, apricot, and strawberry. All RIP domains from Rosaceae share high sequence similarity with conserved residues in the catalytic site and the carbohydrate binding sites. The genomes of Malus domestica and Pyrus communis contain both type 1 and type 2 RIP sequences, whereas for Prunus mume, Prunus persica, Pyrus bretschneideri, and Pyrus communis a complex set of type 1 RIP sequences was retrieved. Heterologous expression and purification of the type 1 as well as the type 2 RIP from apple allowed to characterize the biological activity of the proteins. Both RIPs from Malus domestica can inhibit protein synthesis. Furthermore, molecular modelling suggests that RIPs from Rosaceae possess three-dimensional structures that are highly similar to the model proteins and can bind to RIP substrates. Screening of the recombinant type 2 RIP from apple on a glycan array revealed that this type 2 RIP interacts with terminal sialic acid residues. Our data suggest that the RIPs from Rosaceae are biologically active proteins.

Taxonomic reconsideration of Prunusveitchii (Rosaceae).

Project description:Prunusveitchii was published in 1912 and was treated as a synonym of P.serrulatavar.pubescens. The information about this taxon is relatively scarce. When consulting specimens of Prunus L., type materials of Prunusveitchii were found to belong to three taxa and P.veitchii, P.concinna, P.japonicavar.zhejiangensis, C.jingningensis and C.xueluoensis were found to be conspecific. The taxonomic status of P.veitchii is reconsidered in the present paper. Morphometric analyses were performed to evaluate the significance of differences between P.veitchii and P.serrulatavar.pubescens. The results show that the leaves of P.veitchii are significantly smaller and narrower than the leaves of P.serrulatavar.pubescens and the peduncle and pedicels are shorter. According to the results of morphometric analyses, P.veitchii should be treated as a separate species. To address these results, a lectotype of P.veitchii is designated here and P.concinna, Cerasusjingningensis and C.xueluoensis are here designated as synonyms of P.veitchii.

Rosaceae Fruit Development, Ripening and Post-harvest: An Epigenetic Perspective.

Project description:Rosaceae is a family with an extraordinary spectrum of fruit types, including fleshy peach, apple, and strawberry that provide unique contributions to a healthy diet for consumers, and represent an excellent model for studying fruit patterning and development. In recent years, many efforts have been made to unravel regulatory mechanism underlying the hormonal, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic changes occurring during Rosaceae fruit development. More recently, several studies on fleshy (tomato) and dry (Arabidopsis) fruit model have contributed to a better understanding of epigenetic mechanisms underlying important heritable crop traits, such as ripening and stress response. In this context and summing up the results obtained so far, this review aims to collect the available information on epigenetic mechanisms that may provide an additional level in gene transcription regulation, thus influencing and driving the entire Rosaceae fruit developmental process. The whole body of information suggests that Rosaceae fruit could become also a model for studying the epigenetic basis of economically important phenotypes, allowing for their more efficient exploitation in plant breeding.

From Identity to Enaction: Identity Behavior Theory.

Project description:The article deals with the meaning of identity in action regulation. A strengths-based action model, Identity Behavior Theory (IBT), is concerned with the role that identity plays in the prediction of behavioral enaction, and implications for education, science, and clinical practice. With this respect the article explores and discusses how enacted behavior, including intention and action, depends on level of subscription to identity as well as on resilience and attitudes that are related to such a behavior. The article also illustrates fields of application of IBT, use of IBT with underrepresented and marginalized groups, and as an instrument for assessing and testing possible effects of resilience, attitudes, and identity on the enacted behavior. IBT is now used to examine behavior in a variety of educational contexts in the United States, and more studies are needed to satisfactorily validate application of the model empirically.

Typification of 23 names in Eriobotrya (Maleae, Rosaceae).

Project description:As part of a comprehensive systematic study on the genus Eriobotrya and its close relatives from the E & SE Asia, new typifications of 23 names are presented here, along with some nomenclatural notes of the names involved. We lectotypified 22 names including accepted names and synonyms. They are: E. acuminatissima, E. bengalensis var. angustifolia; E. bengalensis f. intermedia, E. brackloi, E. brackloi var. atrichophylla, E. elliptica var. petelotii, E. fragrans var. furfuracea, E. glabrescens, E. grandiflora, E. henryi, E. oblongifolia, E. petiolata, E. platyphylla, E. poilanei, E. prinoides, E. prinoides var. laotica, E. salwinensis, E. serrata, E. stipularis, Hiptage cavaleriei, Photinia longifolia, Symplocos seguinii. One neotype of Photinia dubia was also proposed in this study, and E. pseudoraphiolepis and Mespilus cuila were identified as superfluous names. In addition, we also summarized the typification of 18 names for taxonomic reference: E. angustissima, E. balgooyi, E. condaoensis, E. × daduheensis, E. elliptica, E. fulvicoma, E. fragrans, E. glabrescens var. victoriensis, E. hookeriana, E. latifolia, E. obovata, E. malipoensis, E. merguiensis, E. tengyuehensis, E. wardii, Mespilus bengalensis, Photinia deflexa, and M. japonica.

Genomics of pear and other Rosaceae fruit trees.

Project description:The family Rosaceae includes many economically important fruit trees, such as pear, apple, peach, cherry, quince, apricot, plum, raspberry, and loquat. Over the past few years, whole-genome sequences have been released for Chinese pear, European pear, apple, peach, Japanese apricot, and strawberry. These sequences help us to conduct functional and comparative genomics studies and to develop new cultivars with desirable traits by marker-assisted selection in breeding programs. These genomics resources also allow identification of evolutionary relationships in Rosaceae, development of genome-wide SNP and SSR markers, and construction of reference genetic linkage maps, which are available through the Genome Database for the Rosaceae website. Here, we review the recent advances in genomics studies and their practical applications for Rosaceae fruit trees, particularly pear, apple, peach, and cherry.
