Catalytic, Tunable, One-Step Bismuth(III) Triflate Reaction with Alcohols: Dehydration Versus Dimerization.

ABSTRACT: Bi(OTf)₃·xH₂O is a powerful catalyst for the dehydration of tertiary alcohols into alkenes in apolar solvents. The reaction proceeds smoothly and selectively, with amounts as low as 0.01 mol % catalyst, in yields up to 93%. Moreover, in polar solvents, Bi(OTf)₃·xH₂O (0.1-1 mol %) selectively catalyzes the dimerization of the alcohols instead, forming new C-C bonds, in yields up to 96%. This mild, efficient, economic, and eco-friendly method is applicable across different chemical classes and amenable to several functional groups.

Project description:Presented herein is the discovery that bismuth(iii) trifluoromethanesulfonate (Bi(OTf)3) is an effective catalyst for the activation of glycosyl bromides and glycosyl chlorides. The key objective for the development of this methodology is to employ only one promoter in the lowest possible amount and to avoid using any additive/co-catalyst/acid scavenger except molecular sieves. Bi(OTf)3 works well in promoting the glycosidation of differentially protected glucosyl, galactosyl, and mannosyl halides with many classes of glycosyl acceptors. Most reactions complete within 1 h in the presence of only 35% of green and light-stable Bi(OTf)3 catalyst.

Gallium (III) triflate catalyzed efficient Strecker reaction of ketones and their fluorinated analogs.

Project description:The synthesis of alpha-aminonitriles and their fluorinated analogs has been carried out in high yield and purity by the Strecker reaction from the corresponding ketones and amines with trimethylsilyl cyanide using gallium triflate in dichloromethane. Monofluoro-, difluro-, or trifluoromethyl groups can be incorporated into the alpha-aminonitrile product by varying the nature of the fluorinated ketones. Study with various fluorinated and nonfluorinated ketones reveals that the choice of proper catalyst and the solvent system (suitable metal triflates as a catalyst and dichloromethane as a solvent) plays the key role in the direct Strecker reactions of ketones.

Surface hydrophobicity and acidity effect on alumina catalyst in catalytic methanol dehydration reaction.

Project description:BackgroundMethanol to dimethyl ether (MTD) is considered one of the main routes for the production of clean bio-fuel. The effect of copper loading on the catalytic performance of different phases of alumina that formed by calcination at two different temperatures was examined for the dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether (DME).ResultsA range of Cu loadings of (1, 2, 4, 6, 10 and 15% Cu wt/wt) on Al2O3 calcined at 350 and 550 °C were prepared and characterized by TGA, XRD, BET, NH3-TPD, TEM, H2-TPR, SEM, EDX, XPS and DRIFT-Pyridine techniques. The prepared catalysts were used in a fixed bed reactor under reaction conditions in which the temperature ranged from 180-300 °C with weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) = 12.1 h-1. It was observed that all catalysts calcined at 550 °C (γ-Al2O3 support phase) exhibited higher activity than those calcined at 350 °C (γ-AlOOH), and this is due to the phase support change. Furthermore, the optimum Cu loading was found to be 6% Cu/γ-Al2O3 with this catalyst also showing a high degree of stability under steady state conditions and this is attributed to the enhancement in surface acidity and hydrophobicity.ConclusionThe addition of copper to the support improved the catalyst properties and activity. For all the copper modified catalysts, the optimum catalyst with high degree of activity and stability was 6% copper loaded on gamma alumina. © 2017 The Authors. Bismuth-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling of Arylboronic Acids with Triflate and Nonaflate Salts.

Project description:Herein we present a Bi-catalyzed cross-coupling of arylboronic acids with perfluoroalkyl sulfonate salts based on a Bi(III)/Bi(V) redox cycle. An electron-deficient sulfone ligand proved to be key for the successful implementation of this protocol, which allows the unusual construction of C(sp2)-O bonds using commercially available NaOTf and KONf as coupling partners. Preliminary mechanistic studies as well as theoretical investigations reveal the intermediacy of a highly electrophilic Bi(V) species, which rapidly eliminates phenyl triflate.

Transition metal triflate catalyzed conversion of alcohols, ethers and esters to olefins.

Project description:Herein, we report an efficient transition metal triflate catalyzed approach to convert biomass-based compounds, such as monoterpene alcohols, sugar alcohols, octyl acetate and tea tree oil, to their corresponding olefins in high yields. The reaction proceeds through C-O bond cleavage under solvent-free conditions, where the catalytic activity is determined by the oxophilicity and the Lewis acidity of the metal catalyst. In addition, we demonstrate how the oxygen containing functionality affects the formation of the olefins. Furthermore, the robustness of the used metal triflate catalysts, Fe(OTf)3 and Hf(OTf)4, is highlighted by their ability to convert an over 2400-fold excess of 2-octanol to octenes in high isolated yields.

A One-Pot Tandem Strategy in Catalytic Asymmetric Vinylogous Aldol Reaction of Homoallylic Alcohols.

Project description:Reported is a rationally-designed one-pot sequential strategy that allows homoallylic alcohols to be employed in a catalytic, asymmetric, direct vinylogous aldol reaction with a series of activated acyclic ketones, including trifluoromethyl ketones, γ-ketoesters, and α-keto phosphonates, in high yields (up to 95%) with excellent regio- and enantio-selectivity (up to 99% ee). This modular combination, including Jones oxidation and asymmetric organocatalysis, has satisfactory compatibility and reliability even at a 20 mmol scale, albeit without intermediary purification.

Catalytic Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols by Copper Complexes Bearing Redox-Active Ligands with Tunable H-Bonding Groups.

Project description:In this research article, we describe the structure, spectroscopy, and reactivity of a family of copper complexes bearing bidentate redox-active ligands that contain H-bonding donor groups. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography shows that these tetracoordinate complexes are stabilized by intramolecular H-bonding interactions between the two ligand scaffolds. Interestingly, the Cu complexes undergo multiple reversible oxidation-reduction processes associated with the metal ion (CuI, CuII, CuIII) and/or the o-phenyldiamido ligand (L2-, L•-, L). Moreover, some of the CuII complexes catalyze the aerobic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes (or ketones) at room temperature. Our extensive mechanistic analysis suggests that the dehydrogenation of alcohols occurs via an unusual reaction pathway for galactose oxidase model systems, in which O2 reduction occurs concurrently with substrate oxidation.

Indium triflate-assisted nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions of nitrosobezene-derived cycloadducts with alcohols.

Project description:Exclusive nucleophilic aromatic substitution of hydrogen in conjunction with cleavage of the N-O bond was observed when nitrosobenzene-derived nitroso cycloadducts were treated with indium triflate in the presence of alcohols. Aromatic alkoxylated syn-1,4 aminocycloalkenol products with good to excellent regioselectivity (16:84 to 0:100, ortho:para) were obtained.

Regioselective Single-Electron Tsuji-Trost Reaction of Allylic Alcohols: A Photoredox/Nickel Dual Catalytic Approach.

Project description:A radical-mediated functionalization of allyl alcohol derived partners with a variety of alkyl 1,4-dihydropyridines via photoredox/nickel dual catalysis is described. This transformation transpires with high linear and E-selectivity, avoiding the requirement of harsh conditions (e.g., strong base, elevated temperature). Additionally, using aryl sulfinate salts as radical precursors, allyl sulfones can also be obtained. Kinetic isotope effect experiments implicated oxidative addition of the nickel catalyst to the allylic electrophile as the turnover-limiting step, supporting previous computational studies.
