Hydrated Zinc Borates and Their Industrial Use.

ABSTRACT: Zinc borates are important chemical products having industrial applications as functional additives in polymers, bio-composites, paints and ceramics. Of the thirteen well documented hydrated binary zinc borates, Zn[B3O4(OH)3] (2ZnO?3B2O3?3H2O) is manufactured in the largest quantity and is known as an article of commerce as 2ZnO?3B2O3?3.5H2O. Other hydrated zinc borates in commercial use include 4ZnO?B2O3?H2O, 3ZnO?3B2O3?5H2O and 2ZnO?3B2O3?7H2O. The history, chemistry, and applications of these and other hydrated zinc borate phases are briefly reviewed, and outstanding problems in the field are highlighted.

Solvation studies of a zinc finger protein in hydrated ionic liquids.

Project description:The solvation of the zinc finger protein with the PDB-ID “5ZNF” in hydrated ionic liquids was studied at varying water content. 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and trifluoromethanesulfonate were the cation and anion, respectively. The protein stability as well as the solvation structure, the shell dynamics and the shell resolved dielectric properties were investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The lengths of the respective trajectories extended up to 200 nanoseconds in order to cover the complete solvent dynamics. Considering the above mentioned properties as a function of the water content they all exhibit a maximum or minimum at the very same mole fraction. While the exact value x(H(2)O) = 0.927 depends on the underlying force field, its origin may be traced back to the competition between the van der Waals and the electrostatic energy of the protein as well as to the transition from aqueous dielectric screening to ionic charge screening with decreasing water content. The parameter-free Voronoi decomposition of space served as a basis for the analysis of most results. In particular, solvation shells were naturally inferred from this concept. In addition to the molecular analysis a mesoscopic view is given in terms of dielectric properties. Thereby, the net dielectric constant is decomposed into contributions from the protein, the first and second solvation shells as well as the bulk. Cross-terms between these components are given, too.

Crystal Chemistry of High-Temperature Borates.

Project description:In recent years borate-based crystals has attracted substantial interest among the research community. The overall importance of this family of materials is reflected in miscellaneous articles and several reviews that have been published over the years. Crystalline borate materials exhibit numerous interesting physical properties, which make them promising for further practical applications. Diversity of functional characteristics results from their high structural flexibility caused in the linkage of planar/non-planar BO3 groups and BO4 tetrahedra, which can occur as isolated or condensed structural units. This report is a brief review on crystal chemistry and structure features of anhydrous/high-temperature borates. Polymorphism of boron-oxygen radicals has been considered basing on cations' nature and synthesis conditions. Analysis of the laws governing borates structures and general principles of their systematics was discussed. As a result, an alternative classification of anhydrous compounds has been considered. It is based on four orders of their subdivision: (1) by the variety of anion formers, (2) by the cation charge, (3) by the N = NM:NB, i.e., ratio of metal atoms number to the ratio of boron atoms number (N-factor) value indicating the borate structural type (if it is known), (4) by the cation type and size.

Facile and Rapid Synthesis of Porous Hydrated V2O5 Nanoflakes for High-Performance Zinc Ion Battery Applications

Project description:Hydrated V2O5 with unique physical and chemical characteristics has been widely used in various function devices, including solar cells, catalysts, electrochromic windows, supercapacitors, and batteries. Recently, it has attracted extensive attention because of the enormous potential for the high-performance aqueous zinc ion battery cathode. Although great progress has been made in developing applications of hydrated V2O5, little research focuses on improving current synthesis methods, which have disadvantages of massive energy consumption, tedious reaction time, and/or low efficiency. Herein, an improved synthesis method is developed for hydrated V2O5 nanoflakes according to the phenomenon that the reactions between V2O5 and peroxide can be dramatically accelerated with low-temperature heating. Porous hydrated V2O5 nanoflake gel was obtained from cheap raw materials at 40 °C in 30 min. It shows a high specific capacity, of 346.6 mAh/g, at 0.1 A/g; retains 55.2% of that at 20 A/g; and retains a specific capacity of 221.0 mAh/g after 1800 charging/discharging cycles at 1 A/g as an aqueous zinc ion battery cathode material. This work provides a highly facile and rapid synthesis method for hydrated V2O5, which may favor its applications in energy storage and other functional devices.

Enabling giant thermopower by heterostructure engineering of hydrated vanadium pentoxide for zinc ion thermal charging cells.

Project description:Flexible power supply devices provide possibilities for wearable electronics in the Internet of Things. However, unsatisfying capacity or lifetime of typical batteries or capacitors seriously limit their practical applications. Different from conventional heat-to-electricity generators, zinc ion thermal charging cells has been a competitive candidate for the self-power supply solution, but the lack of promising cathode materials has restricted the achievement of promising performances. Herein, we propose an attractive cathode material by rational heterostructure engineering of hydrated vanadium pentoxide. Owing to the integration of thermodiffusion and thermoextraction effects, the thermopower is significantly improved from 7.8 ± 2.6 mV K-1 to 23.4 ± 1.5 mV K-1. Moreover, an impressive normalized power density of 1.9 mW m-2 K-2 is achieved in the quasi-solid-state cells. In addition, a wearable power supply constructed by three units can drive the commercial health monitoring system by harvesting body heat. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of electrodes design for wearable thermoelectric applications.

Infrared Spectra of the Crystalline Inorganic Borates.

Project description:Infrared absorption spectra of anhydrous, crystalline, inorganic borates were obtained in the 2000 cm-1 to 300 cm-1 range. Compounds with B10 and B11 isotopes were prepared to assist interpretation. Spectral bands for all orthoborates and pyroborates and some metaborates could be assigned satisfactorily. Borates with complex ring-type anions generally exhibited spectra of such complexity that only superficial interpretation was attempted. From correlations between spectra and structure it appears that boron in 3-fold or in 4-fold coordination can be identified with reasonable assurance on the basis of the infrared spectrum alone. Absorption bands are tabulated for about 80 borates and typical spectra are shown.

The Synergistic Microbiological Effects of Industrial Produced Packaging Polyethylene Films Incorporated with Zinc Nanoparticles.

Project description:Zinc compounds in polyolefin films regulate the transmission of UV-VIS radiation, affect mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity. According to hypothesis, the use of zinc- containing masterbatches in polyethylene films (PE) with different chemical nature-hydrophilic zinc oxide (ZO) and hydrophobic zinc stearate (ZS)-can cause a synergistic effect, especially due to their antimicrobial properties. PE films obtained on an industrial scale containing zinc oxide and zinc stearate masterbatches were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus strains. The morphology of the samples (SEM), composition (EDX), UV barrier and transparency, mechanical properties and global migration level were also determined. SEM micrographs confirmed the good dispersion of zinc additives in the PE matrix. The use of both masterbatches in one material caused a synergistic effect of antimicrobial activity against both bacterial strains. The ZO masterbatch reduced the transparency of films, increased their UV-barrier ability and improved tensile strength, while the ZS masterbatch did not significantly change the tested parameters. The global migration limit was not exceeded for any of the samples. The use of ZO and ZS masterbatch mixtures enables the design of packaging with high microbiological protection with a controlled transmission for UV and VIS radiation.

Sodium Borates: Expanding the Electrolyte Selection for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are a promising grid-level storage technology due to the abundance and low cost of sodium. The development of new electrolytes for SIBs is imperative since it impacts battery life and capacity. Currently, sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6 ) is used as the benchmark salt, but is highly hygroscopic and generates toxic HF. This work describes the synthesis of a series of sodium borate salts, with electrochemical studies revealing that Na[B(hfip)4 ]⋅DME (hfip=hexafluoroisopropyloxy, Oi PrF ) and Na[B(pp)2 ] (pp=perfluorinated pinacolato, O2 C2 (CF3 )4 ) have excellent electrochemical performance. The [B(pp)2 ]- anion also exhibits a high tolerance to air and water. Both electrolytes give more stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces than conventionally used NaPF6 , as demonstrated by impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, they give greater cycling stability and comparable capacity to NaPF6 for SIBs, as shown in commercial pouch cells.

Evaluation of industrial water use efficiency considering pollutant discharge in China.

Project description:China is facing severe pressure on its water resources and water environments. Calculating the industrial water efficiency of each province is an important index for the central government to evaluate local governments. In the traditional water resources evaluation index, the industrial water use efficiency and pollutant discharge are evaluated separately. In this paper, we collected industrial input data, output data and pollutant discharge data with a four-stage data envelopment analysis to calculate China's industrial water use efficiency with and without considering pollutant discharge, and then analyzed the factors influencing the industrial water use efficiency. The results show that the eastern coastal provinces of China have the highest water use efficiency and are less affected by pollutant discharge than other provinces. The industrial water use efficiency of the central and western provinces is lower than that of the other provinces, and the industrial water use efficiency in the central provinces is greatly affected by pollutant discharge. Factor endowment, economic development level, scientific and technological progress, industrial structure, proportion of foreign investment, water consumption per 10000 yuan of value-added by industry, industrial sewage treatment capacity and educational investment have a significant influence on the industrial water use efficiency of China. We suggest that the government strengthen the construction of sewage plants and other related infrastructure in central provinces when conducting the industrial transfer of heavy polluting enterprises.
