Salmonella exploit host-derived nitrate for growth in the lumen of the inflamed intestine. The generation of host-derived nitrate is dependent on Nos2, which encodes inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), an enzyme that catalyzes nitric oxide (NO) production.
