Project description:The self-assembly process of metal nanoparticles has aroused wide attention due to its low cost and simplicity. However, most of the recently reported self-assembly systems only involve two or fewer metals. Herein, we first report a successful synthesis of self-assembled Ag@AuCu trimetal nanoplates in aqueous solution. The building blocks of multibranched AuCu alloy nanocrystals were first synthesized by a chemical reduction method. The growth of Ag onto the AuCu nanocrystals in the presence of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) induces a self-assembly process and formation of Ag@AuCu trimetal nanoplates. These nanoplates with an average side length of over 2 μm show a porous morphology and a very clear boundary with the branches of the as-prepared AuCu alloy nanocrystals extending out. The shape and density of the Ag@AuCu trimetal nanoplates can be controlled by changing the reaction time and the concentration of silver nitrate. The as-assembled Ag@AuCu nanoplates are expected to have the potential for wide-ranging applications in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and catalysis owing to their unique structures.

Project description:We use molecular-dynamics simulations to probe the experimentally observed aggregation of PVP-covered triangular Ag nanoplates to form 2D sheets in solution. We find lateral plate attachment is the most favorable aggregation pathway - consistent with experiment. The mechanism is general and suggests new processing strategies for creating 2D architectures in solution-phase syntheses.

Project description:Surface plasmon modes in metallic nanostructures largely determine their optoelectronic properties. Such plasmon modes can be manipulated by changing the morphology of the nanoparticles or by bringing plasmonic nanoparticle building blocks close to each other within organized assemblies. We report the EELS mapping of such plasmon modes in pure Ag nanocubes, Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes, and arrays of Au@Ag nanocubes. We show that these arrays enable the creation of interesting plasmonic structures starting from elementary building blocks. Special attention will be dedicated to the plasmon modes in a triangular array formed by three nanocubes. Because of hybridization, a combination of such nanotriangles is shown to provide an antenna effect, resulting in strong electrical field enhancement at the narrow gap between the nanotriangles.

Project description:Two types of out-of-substrate Ag-Ag2O nanoplates were grown on a ZnO substrate through a surfactantless photochemical method. First, the in situ photochemically synthesized Ag-Ag2O nanoparticles further crystallized into nanoplate-like superstructures with rough surfaces and ragged edges. The nanoparticle-mediated crystallization process was governed by a layer-by-layer crystallization mechanism. Our study should help fundamentally understand the formation mechanism of hierarchical nanoparticle superstructures. Under continuous UV illumination, the hundreds of nanometer-sized rough nanoplates (i.e., the nanoplate-like superstructures of nanoparticles) can be transformed into large smooth nanoplates with sizes of up to several micrometers. The out-of-substrate Ag-Ag2O nanoplates/ZnO heterostructures are potentially promising for photocatalytic applications.

Project description:A surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-enhanced optical signal using a nanoslit array and acridine orange (AO) dye system at a flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate was achieved in this work and demonstrated a simple sensing scheme to directly detect SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid via DNA hybridization. A simple nanoimprinting pattern transfer technique was introduced to form uniform reproducible nanoslit arrays where the dimensions of the slit array were controlled by the thickness of the gold film. The plasmon-exciton coupling effect on the optical enhancement of different dye molecules, i.e., AO, propidium iodide (PI), or dihydroethidium (DHE) attached to the nanoslit surfaces, was examined thoroughly by measuring the surface reflection and fluorescence imaging. The results indicate that the best overlap of the plasmon resonance wavelength to the excitation spectrum of AO presented the largest optical enhancement (∼57×) compared to the signal at flat gold surfaces. Based on this finding, a sensitive assay for detecting DNA hybridization was generated using the interaction of the selected SARS-CoV-2 ssDNA and dsDNA with AO to trigger the metachromatic behavior of the dye at the nanoarray surfaces. We found strong optical signal amplification on the formation of acridine-ssDNA complexes and a quenched signal upon hybridization to the complementary target DNA (ct-DNA) along with a blue shift in the fluorescence of AO-dsDNAs. A quantitative evaluation of the ct-DNA concentration in a range of 100-0.08 nM using both the reflection and emission imaging signals demonstrated two linear regimes with a lowest detection limit of 0.21 nM. The sensing method showed high sensitivity and distinguished signals from 1-, 2-, and 3-base mismatched DNA targets, as well as high stability and reusability. This approach toward enhancing optical signal for DNA sensing offers promise in a general, rapid, and direct vision detection method for nucleic acid analytes.

Project description:Silver (Ag)-grafted PMA (poly-methacrylic acid, sodium salt) nanocomposite loaded with sorafenib tosylate (SFT), an anticancer drug, showed good capability as a drug carrier allowing on-demand control of the dose, timing and duration of the drug release by laser irradiation stimuli. In this study, the preparation of Ag-PMA capsules loaded with SFT by using sacrificial silica microparticles as templates was reported. A high drug loading (DL%) of ∼13% and encapsulation efficiency (EE%) of about 76% were obtained. The photo-release profiles were regulated via the adjustment of light wavelength and power intensity. A significant improvement of SFT release (14% vs. 21%) by comparing SFT-Ag-PMA capsules with Ag-PMA colloids under the same experimental conditions was observed. Moreover, an increase of drug release by up to 35% was reached by tuning the laser irradiation wavelength near to Ag nanoparticles' surface plasmon resonance (SPR). These experimental results together with more economical use of the active component suggest the potentiality of SFT-Ag-PMA capsules as a smart drug delivery system.

Project description:In this article, we present a novel synthesis of mesoporous SiO2/Ag nanostructures for dye (methylene blue) adsorption and surface plasmon mediated photocatalysis. Mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles with a pore size of 3.2 nm were synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a structure directing agent and functionalized with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane to introduce amine groups. The adsorption behavior of non-porous SiO2 nanoparticles was compared with that of the mesoporous silica nanoparticles. The large surface area and higher porosity of mesoporous SiO2 facilitated better adsorption of the dye as compared to the non-porous silica. Ag decorated SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by attaching silver (Ag) nanoparticles of different morphologies, i.e. spherical and triangular, on amine functionalized silica. The photocatalytic activity of the mesoporous SiO2/Ag was compared with that of non-porous SiO2/Ag nanoparticles and pristine Ag nanoparticles. Mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles (k d = 31.3 × 10-3 g mg-1 min-1) showed remarkable improvement in the rate of degradation of methylene blue as compared to non-porous SiO2 (k d = 25.1 × 10-3 g mg-1 min-1) and pristine Ag nanoparticles (k d = 19.3 × 10-3 g mg-1 min-1). Blue Ag nanoparticles, owing to their better charge carrier generation and enhanced surface plasmon resonance, exhibited superior photocatalysis performance as compared to yellow Ag nanoparticles in all nanostructures.

Project description:Highly energetic electron-hole pairs (hot carriers) formed from plasmon decay in metallic nanostructures promise sustainable pathways for energy-harvesting devices. However, efficient collection before thermalization remains an obstacle for realization of their full energy generating potential. Addressing this challenge requires detailed understanding of physical processes from plasmon excitation in the metal to their collection in a molecule or a semiconductor, where atomistic theoretical investigation may be particularly beneficial. Unfortunately, first-principles theoretical modeling of these processes is extremely costly, preventing a detailed analysis over a large number of potential nanostructures and limiting the analysis to systems with a few 100s of atoms. Recent advances in machine learned interatomic potentials suggest that dynamics can be accelerated with surrogate models which replace the full solution of the Schrödinger Equation. Here, we modify an existing neural network, Hierarchically Interacting Particle Neural Network (HIP-NN), to predict plasmon dynamics in Ag nanoparticles. The model takes as a minimum as three time steps of the reference real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) calculated charges as history and predicts trajectories for 5 fs in great agreement with the reference simulation. Further, we show that a multistep training approach in which the loss function includes errors from future time-step predictions can stabilize the model predictions for the entire simulated trajectory (∼25 fs). This extends the model's capability to accurately predict plasmon dynamics in large nanoparticles of up to 561 atoms, not present in the training data set. More importantly, with machine learning models on GPUs, we gain a speed-up factor of ∼103 as compared with the rt-TDDFT calculations when predicting important physical quantities such as dynamic dipole moments in Ag55 and a factor of ∼104 for extended nanoparticles that are 10 times larger. This underscores the promise of future machine learning accelerated electron/nuclear dynamics simulations for understanding fundamental properties of plasmon-driven hot carrier devices.

Project description:As a source of clean energy, hydrogen (H2) is a promising alternative to fossil fuels in reducing the carbon footprint. However, due to the highly explosive nature of H2, developing a high-performance sensor for real-time detection of H2 gas at low concentration is essential. Here, we demonstrated the H2 gas sensing performance of Ag/Pd nanoparticle-functionalized ZnO nanoplates. Bimetallic Ag/Pd nanoparticles with an average size of 8 nm were prepared and decorated on the surface of ZnO nanoplates to enhance the H2 gas sensing performance. Compared with pristine ZnO, the sensor based on ZnO nanoplate doped with Ag/Pd (0.025 wt%) exhibited an outstanding response upon exposure to H2 gas (R a/R g = 78 for 500 ppm) with fast response time and speedy recovery. The sensor also showed excellent selectivity for the detection of H2 over the interfering gases (i.e., CO, NH3, H2S, and VOCs). The superior gas sensing of the sensor was dominated by the morphological structure of ZnO, and the synergistic effect of strong adsorption and the optimum catalytic characteristics of the bimetallic Ag/Pd enhances the hydrogen response of the sensors. Thus, bimetallic Ag/Pd-doped ZnO is a promising sensing material for the quantitative determination of H2 concentration towards industrial applications.

Project description:We investigated the surface photovoltage (SPV) behaviors of ZnO/Ag one-dimensional (1D) nanogratings using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). The grating structure could couple surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with photons, giving rise to strong light confinement at the ZnO/Ag interface. The larger field produced more photo-excited carriers and increased the SPV. SPP excitation influenced the spatial distribution of the photo-excited carriers and their recombination processes. As a result, the SPV relaxation time clearly depended on the wavelength and polarization of the incident light. All of these results suggested that SPV measurement using KPFM should be very useful for studying the plasmonic effects in nanoscale metal/semiconductor hybrid structures.
