Supplemental paste composition data from the Manialtepec Basin, Oaxaca.

ABSTRACT: This data article contains archaeological context information and paste compositional data from 66 pottery sherds collected at seven archaeological sites in the Manialtepec Basin on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. The data include maps showing collection locations, a drawing of one archaeological profile, photographs of sherds, and compositional data produced by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis at the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR). The NAA data include a tabulation of principal components, data from log-based cluster analyses and compositional group defining discriminant analyses. The data also include bootstrapped Mahalanobis distance calculations. For data interpretation, refer to "Ceramic Production and Consumption in an In-Between Place: Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis of Ceramics from the Manialtepec Basin of Oaxaca" [1].

Data for the marble-cement paste composites for sustainable construction.

Project description:Waste utilization is crucial for achieving sustainability in the construction industry. This article provides data that demonstrate the possibility of industrial waste utilization in high volumes to enhance cementitious composites. This dataset could help researchers understand the cement paste composites' behavior in the fresh and hardened state. The data were obtained from the physical, mechanical, and durability tests of laboratory-produced samples. The composites were tested at 7, 28, and 90-days of hardening, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The obtained values were then evaluated using the DataFit curve fitting (nonlinear regression) and data plotting software. Additionally, two spreadsheets were created to help researchers calculate their weights and calculate the bulk specific gravity, water absorption, and porosity values. Supplemental Clostridium butyricum MIYAIRI 588 Affects Intestinal Bacterial Composition of Finishing Pigs.

Project description:Animal gastrointestinal tracts are populated by highly diverse and complex microbiotas. The gut microbiota influences the bioavailability of dietary components and is closely associated with physiological processes in the host. Clostridium butyricum reportedly improves growth performance and affects the gut microbiota and immune functions in post-weaning piglets. However, the effects of C. butyricum on finishing pigs remain unclear. Therefore, we herein investigated the effects of C. butyricum MIYAIRI 588 (CBM588) on the gut microbiota of finishing pigs. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed using fecal samples and ileal, cecal, and colonic contents collected after slaughtering. The α-diversity of the small intestinal microbiota was lower than that of the large intestinal microbiota, whereas β-diversity showed different patterns depending on sample collection sites. The administration of CBM588 did not significantly affect the α- or β-diversity of the microbiotas of fecal and intestinal content samples regardless of the collection site. However, a linear discriminant ana-lysis Effect Size revealed that the relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae at the family level, Bifidobacterium at the order level, and Lactobacillus ruminis and Bifidobacterium pseudolongum at the species level were higher in the fecal samples and cecal and colonic contents of the treatment group than in those of the control group. Therefore, the administration of CBM588 to finishing pigs affected the composition of the gut microbiota and increased the abundance of bacteria that are beneficial to the host. These results provide important insights into the effects of probiotic administration on relatively stable gut microbial ecosystems.

Cancer Treatment Data in Central Cancer Registries: When Are Supplemental Data Needed?

Project description:BackgroundWe evaluated treatment concordance between the Colorado All Payer Claims Database (APCD) and the Colorado Central Cancer Registry (CCCR) to explore whether APCDs can augment registry data. We compare treatment concordance for breast cancer, an extensively studied site with an inpatient reporting source and select leukemias that are often diagnosed outpatient.MethodsWe analyzed concordance by cancer type and treatment, patient demographics, reporting source, and health insurance, calculating the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values (PPV) and Kappa statistics. We estimated an adjusted logistic regression model to assess whether the APCD statistically significantly reports additional cancer-directed treatments.ResultsAmong women with breast cancer, 14% had chemotherapy treatments that were absent from the CCCR. Missing treatments were more common among women younger than age 50 (15%) and patients aged 75 and older (19%), rural residents (17%), and when the reporting source was outpatient (22%). Similar and more pronounced patterns for people with leukemia were observed. Concordance for oral treatments was lower for each cancer. Sensitivity and PPVs were high, with moderate Kappa statistics. The APCD was 5.3 percentage points less likely to identify additional treatments for breast cancer patients and 10 percentage points more likely to identify additional treatments when the reporting source was an outpatient facility.ConclusionA robust data infrastructure is needed to investigate research questions that require population-level analyses, particularly for questions seeking to reduce health inequity and comparisons across payers, including Medicare Advantage and fee-for-service. APCD data are a step toward creating an infrastructure for cancer, particularly for patients who reside in rural areas and/or receive care from outpatient centers.

Comparison of diversity and composition of macrofungal species between intensive mushroom harvesting and non-harvesting areas in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Project description:Wild edible mushrooms have been collected and consumed by human groups for centuries, and today they represent a relevant source of food and income for many rural families worldwide. Preserving these non-timber forest products is of great interest, and there is concern about the damage caused by intensive mushroom harvesting on macromycete communities. The aim of this study was to evaluate variation in diversity and composition of macromycete species between areas regularly used for mushroom harvesting and non-harvested areas in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, Mexico, as well as to assess the influence of microclimatic and environmental factors on this variation. We selected two harvested and two non-harvested sites within the study area. In each one, we established 10 permanent plots of 10 m × 10 m where we sampled all the observed fruit bodies weekly from June to October 2017. We recorded a total of 856 individuals corresponding to 138 species, and 23 of these were identified as edible. Overall macromycete diversity, edible species diversity and composition were similar in Sites 1 (non-harvested) and 3 (harvested), and in Sites 2 (non-harvested) and 4 (harvested). Variation of diversity and species composition along the studied area was mainly related to microclimatic variables, while most environmental variables and variables related to vegetation structure similarly affected macromycete species in the four sites. Our results indicate that intensive harvesting of wild edible mushrooms is not affecting the diversity and distribution of macromycete species in our study area. Knowledge on the sustainability of mushroom harvesting practices can help improve current regulations regarding the management of these valuable non-timber forest products.

A group-sequential randomized trial design utilizing supplemental trial data.

Project description:Definitive clinical trials are resource intensive, often requiring a large number of participants over several years. One approach to improve the efficiency of clinical trials is to incorporate historical information into the primary trial analysis. This approach has tremendous potential in the areas of pediatric or rare disease trials, where achieving reasonable power is difficult. In this article, we introduce a novel Bayesian group-sequential trial design based on Multisource Exchangeability Models, which allows for dynamic borrowing of historical information at the interim analyses. Our approach achieves synergy between group sequential and adaptive borrowing methodology to attain improved power and reduced sample size. We explore the frequentist operating characteristics of our design through simulation and compare our method to a traditional group-sequential design. Our method achieves earlier stopping of the primary study while increasing power under the alternative hypothesis but has a potential for type I error inflation under some null scenarios. We discuss the issues of decision boundary determination, power and sample size calculations, and the issue of information accrual. We present our method for a continuous and binary outcome, as well as in a linear regression setting.

Data on the rheological behavior of cassava starch paste using different models.

Project description:Proper selection of rheological models is very important in flow characterization. These models are often used to evaluate parameters that help in the characterization of food samples. Rheological models also provide flow predictions for extreme conditions where the flow nature of the fluid cannot be determined, hence the need for appropriate selection of rheological models. The principal aim of this study is to suggest a rheological model that best characterize the rheological behavior of native cassava starch and to determine the effect of state variables like temperature and concentration on the accuracy of rheological models. Five rheological models (i.e. Herschel-Bulkley model, Robertson-Stiff model, Power-law model, Bingham plastic model and Prandtl-Eyring model) were selected for this study and these models were modified into statistical models by the inclusion of the error variance (ε). The least-square method was used in evaluating the various model parameters for each model. From this study, it was seen that the Herschel-Bulkley model and the Robertson-Stiff model most accurately described the rheological patterns in cassava starch production. The sensitivity analysis of the different rheological models also shows that the accuracy of the Herschel-Bulkley model, Robertson-Stiff model and Power-law model is not significantly affected by variations in temperature and concentration of the cassava starch. However, it was observed that the Bingham plastic model and Prandtl-Eyring model gave less accurate predictions at higher concentration and lower temperature respectively. A lot of the industrially accepted models such as the Bingham plastic model may not necessarily be the best model for characterization cassava starch production as shown in this study, hence rheological model optimization is recommended for further study.

Supplemental Bacillus subtilis DSM 32315 manipulates intestinal structure and microbial composition in broiler chickens.

Project description:Knowledge about the modulation of gut microbiota improves our understanding of the underlying mechanism by which probiotic treatment benefits the chickens. This study examined the effects of Bacillus subtilis DSM 32315 on intestinal structure and microbial composition in broilers. Broiler chicks were fed basal diets without or with B. subtilis supplementation (1.0 × 109 spores/kg of diet). Supplemental B. subtilis increased average body weight and average daily gain, as well as elevated villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio of ileum in broilers. Multi-dimension analysis showed a certain degree of separation between the cecal microbiota from treatment and control groups. Increased Firmicutes abundance and reduced Bacteroidetes abundance in cecum were observed responded to B. subtilis addition, which also increased the abundances of Christensenellaceae and Caulobacteraceae, and simultaneously decreased the abundances of potentially harmful bacteria such as Vampirovibrio, Escherichia/Shigella and Parabacteroides. Network analysis signified that B. subtilis addition improved the interaction pattern within cecal microbiota of broilers, however, it exerted little influence on the metabolic pathways of cecal microbiota by comparison of the functional prediction of metagenomes. In conclusion, supplemental B. subtilis DSM 32315 improved growth performance and intestinal structure of broilers, which could be at least partially responsible by the manipulation of cecal microbial composition.

Effects of blended-cement paste chemical composition changes on some strength gains of blended-mortars.

Project description:Effects of chemical compositions changes of blended-cement pastes (BCPCCC) on some strength gains of blended cement mortars (BCMSG) were monitored in order to gain a better understanding for developments of hydration and strength of blended cements. Blended cements (BC) were prepared by blending of 5% gypsum and 6%, 20%, 21%, and 35% marble powder (MP) or 6%, 20%, 21%, and 35% brick powder (BP) for CEMI42.5N cement clinker and grinding these portions in ball mill at 30 (min). Pastes and mortars, containing the MP-BC and the BP-BC and the reference cement (RC) and tap water and standard mortar sand, were also mixed and they were cured within water until testing. Experiments included chemical compositions of pastes and compressive strengths (CS) and flexural strengths (FS) of mortars were determined at 7th-day, 28th-day, and 90th-day according to TS EN 196-2 and TS EN 196-1 present standards. Experimental results indicated that ups and downs of silica oxide (SiO2), sodium oxide (Na2O), and alkali at MP-BCPCC and continuously rising movement of silica oxide (SiO2) at BP-BCPCC positively influenced CS and FS of blended cement mortars (BCM) in comparison with reference mortars (RM) at whole cure days as MP up to 6% or BP up to 35% was blended for cement.
