Datasets evidencing research on classroom practice in L2 disciplinary writing.

ABSTRACT: L2 writing in the disciplines at the university level can be impacted through classroom intervention which uses mixed pedagogical paradigms. In connection to such intervention, this data article presents two datasets, from a classroom practice, which evidence disciplinary writing acquisition. The first dataset consists of pre-and post-classroom intervention abstracts, written by L2 PhD students from different disciplines at a Sino-British University. The second dataset is made up of qualitative questionnaire responses from the students about their experiences of the classroom intervention. The datasets can be used to understand the nature of discourse-structural and linguistic feature changes which take place after pedagogical intervention involving mature learners from mixed disciplines. The data can also provide insight into the impact of classroom teaching approaches on the construction and communication of knowledge by novice writers in their disciplines.

Research ethics in inter- and multi-disciplinary teams: Differences in disciplinary interpretations.

Project description:As research teams are increasingly comprised of members from multiple disciplines, ranging from the physical sciences, life sciences, social and behavioral sciences to the arts and humanities, it is important to revisit how research is conducted at several levels. Coupled with the national concern over rigor and reproducibility in research, it is therefore crucial to ensure that all members of such multidisciplinary teams view the need for ethics in the conduct of research in similar ways. Towards this end, Wayne State University developed a course in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) which was mandatory for all its 1500 doctoral students across all disciplines in its 75 PhD programs. We found that student perceptions of the validity, applicability and usefulness of the course varied by discipline. This was in spite of iterative changes made to the course by faculty in those disciplines to make the content palatable to all. The findings show that more work needs to be done to fully incorporate the needs of social sciences and humanities disciplines in a comprehensive university course. This is especially important as these students become members of large multidisciplinary research teams in order to uphold the highest levels of rigor, reproducibility and ethics.

Main Ingredients for Success in L2 Academic Writing: Outlining, Drafting and Proofreading.

Project description:Spanish undergraduates of English Studies are required to submit their essays in academic English, a genre which most of them are not acquainted with. This paper aims to explore the extralinguistic side of second language (L2) academic writing, more specifically, the combination of metalinguistic items (e.g. transition and frame markers, among others) with students' writing strategies when composing an academic text in L2 English. The research sample conveys a group of 200 Spanish undergraduates of English Studies; they are in their fourth year, so they are expected to be proficient in English academic writing but their written production quality varies considerably. Results are analysed following a mixed methodology by which metalinguistic items are statistically measured, and then contrasted with semi-structured interview results; SPSS and NVivo provide quantitative and qualitative outcomes, respectively. The analyses reveal that undergraduate students who produce complex sentences and more coherent texts employ a wider range of writing strategies both prior and while writing, being able to (un)consciously structure and design their texts more successfully. These high-scoring students make more proficient use of complex transition markers for coherence and frame markers for textual cohesion; their commonly used (pre-)writing strategies are drafting, outlining, and proofreading.

The Influence of Reading Texts on L2 Reading-to-Write Argumentative Writing.

Project description:Reading-to-write is an essential skill in academic writing, and reading-writing tasks have been widely adopted in standardized English tests. Much more recent literature on integrated reading-writing tasks has focused on writers' use of source texts or the validity of integrated writing assessment, while little is known about whether the nature of the types of reading texts has any bearing on integrated reading-writing tasks. This study examines whether the types of reading texts (i.e., similar views or opposing views on a debatable issue) have any influence on second language (L2) students' argumentative writing in terms of the use of argument elements and its overall quality. Fifty-four Chinese second-year university students majoring in English language teaching were asked to write an argumentative essay after reading texts with either similar views or opposing views. Results show that students reading texts with opposing viewpoints presented more data and higher overall quality of argumentative essays than students reading texts with similar viewpoints, although the latter group presented more counterargument data. Pedagogical implications on teaching argumentative writing are discussed.

The role of learner character strengths and classroom emotions in L2 resilience

Project description:This study aimed to examine a theory-driven model to explain how language learner's trait emotional intelligence (TEI) and effort as two learner character strengths predict learner enjoyment as a positive emotion and anxiety and boredom as two negative classroom emotions, and how these variables, collectively, predict resilience in language learning. The underlying relationship between these variables was tested via a comprehensive model within a positive psychology perspective using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The paths in the final structural model indicated that L2 learner TEI did not significantly explain their resilience directly but rather completely indirectly through the mediation of learner negative and positive emotions. Learner effort, directly and indirectly, predicted L2 resilience and its predictive power in it was much larger than that of TEI. In addition, enjoyment and boredom directly influenced L2 resilience and also mediated the relationship between learner character strengths and resilience. Anxiety did not significantly predict learner L2 resilience directly since its influence was rather dependent on the role of enjoyment and boredom in L2 resilience. These findings widely support the claims within positive psychology domain that recognize the vital role of character strengths and learner emotions in enhancing L2 learner resilience.

Exploring Learner Engagement With Multiple Sources of Feedback on L2 Writing Across Genres.

Project description:While there have been growing amount of research on learner engagement with feedback on Second Language (L2) writing in the past decade, learners' multi-dimensional engagement with feedback from multiple sources across different genres has remained under-explored. To address the gaps, this study investigated how six second-year English majors engaged behaviorally, cognitively and affectively with automated, peer and teacher feedback across three genres (argumentation, exposition, and narration) in an L2 writing class given online over a 16-week semester. Through the textual analysis of learners' drafts, feedback and revision and qualitative analysis of their interview transcripts, it was found that the quantity and incorporation rate of feedback in general, across three feedback sources and two feedback types all differed by genres; surface-level teacher feedback remained the most highly incorporated, though. Learners' engagement with feedback also varied, suggesting its complexity triggered by the mediating effect of contextual and individual factors plus the interconnectedness and inconsistencies among engagement dimensions. Two pedagogical implications were provided to enhance learner engagement.

Postsecondary Faculty Attitudes and Beliefs about Writing-Based Pedagogies in the STEM Classroom.

Project description:Writing is an important skill for communicating knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and an aid to developing students' communication skills, content knowledge, and disciplinary thinking. Despite the importance of writing, its incorporation into the undergraduate STEM curriculum is uneven. Research indicates that understanding faculty beliefs is important when trying to propagate evidence-based instructional practices, yet faculty beliefs about writing pedagogies are not yet broadly characterized for STEM teaching at the undergraduate level. Based on a nationwide cross-disciplinary survey at research-intensive institutions, this work aims to understand the extent to which writing is assigned in undergraduate STEM courses and the factors that influence faculty members' beliefs about, and reported use of, writing-based pedagogies. Faculty attitudes about the effectiveness of writing practices did not differ between faculty who assign and do not assign writing; rather, beliefs about the influence of social factors and contextually imposed instructional constraints informed their decisions to use or not use writing. Our findings indicate that strategies to increase the use of writing need to specifically target the factors that influence faculty decisions to assign or not assign writing. It is not faculty beliefs about effectiveness, but rather faculty beliefs about behavioral control and constraints at the departmental level that need to be targeted.

Using Blogs as Practice Writing About Original Neuroscience Papers Enhances Students' Confidence in Their Critical Analysis of Research.

Project description:Increasing emphasis is being put on providing students with opportunities to read and write about primary scientific literature in undergraduate neuroscience education. Extensive research has indicated that students' attitudes and self-efficacy as well as writing quality improve when they are provided with opportunities for practice and feedback. Here we tested the value of using a blog format to practice writing about scientific research articles. Students were assigned small groups and did work on their own individual schedules to build toward time allotted in class to discuss the articles with their groups. Our goal was to build confidence in the students' ability to read and analyze original research articles. We found that the students in the junior-level Systems Neuroscience course had high confidence in their ability to read and analyze papers at the end of the blogging experience. Surprisingly, however, this did not manifest in a change in quality of final, higher stakes, written reports on original research articles when compared to a control sample from a previous year that did not include the blog assignments. We conclude that blogs provide a useful format for students to discuss research articles collaboratively while building confidence in their ability to analyze and discuss original neuroscience articles. Although the final reports' quality did not change compared to the earlier offering of the course, we believe that the blog experience is a valuable tool for building confidence and creating a positive experience for students in learning to read and analyze original neuroscience research articles.

How words ripple through bilingual hands: Motor-language coupling during L1 and L2 writing.

Project description:The speed of our hand movements can be affected by concurrent processing of manual action verbs (MaVs). Whereas this phenomenon is well established for native languages (L1s), it remains underexplored in late foreign languages (L2s), especially during highly automatized tasks. Here we timed keystroke activity while Spanish-English bilinguals copied MaVs, non-manual action verbs, and non-action verbs in their L1 and L2. Motor planning and execution dynamics were indexed by first-letter lag (the time-lapse between word presentation and first keystroke) and whole-word lag (the time-lapse between first and last keystroke), respectively. Despite yielding no effects on motor planning, MaVs facilitated typing execution in L1 but delayed it in L2, irrespective of the subjects' typing skills, age of L2 learning, and L2 competence. Therefore, motor-language coupling effects seem to be present in both languages though they can arise differently in each. These results extend language grounding models, illuminating the role of embodied mechanisms throughout life.

Effects of EFL Learners’ L2 Writing Self-efficacy on Engagement with Written Corrective Feedback

Project description:Research has indicated the integral role of self-efficacy in boosting learner engagement. Yet, little research on this issue has been conducted in the field of L2 writing. The purpose of this quantitative study is to explore how EFL learners’ L2 writing self-efficacy affects the level of their engagement with teacher and peer written corrective feedback (WCF). A sample comprising 227 Taiwanese senior high school students completed two questionnaires: the learner engagement with written corrective feedback scale and the L2 learners’ writing self-efficacy scale. The results showed that the participants self-reported a low-to-moderate level of L2 writing self-efficacy. In addition, when all three subtypes (i.e., ideation, conventions, and self-regulation) of L2 writing self-efficacy were taken into account, self-efficacy for writing self-regulation was the only variable with predictive power for learner engagement with teacher and peer written corrective feedback. The findings further our understanding of EFL learners’ L2 writing self-efficacy and of the under-researched topic of the relationship between L2 writing self-efficacy and learner engagement with written corrective feedback.
