The atrioventricular heart valve (AHV) leaflets have a complex microstructure composed of four distinct layers: atrialis, ventricularis, fibrosa and spongiosa. Specifically, the spongiosa layer is primarily proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).
