Gross primary productivity (GPP), the gross uptake of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) by plant photosynthesis, is the primary driver of the land carbon sink, which presently removes around one quarter of the anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> emissions each year.
