Uniformly Decorated Molybdenum Carbide/Nitride Nanostructures on Biomass Templates for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Applications.

ABSTRACT: Natural fibrils derived from biomass were used as a template to synthesize uniformly decorated nanoparticles (10-12 nm) of molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) and molybdenum nitride (Mo2N) supported on carbon. The nanoparticles have been synthesized through the carburization and nitridation of molybdenum on cotton fibrils, using a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The catalyst exhibits an onset potential of 110 mV and an overpotential of 167 mV to derive a cathodic current density of 10 mA cm-2. The electrocatalyst also demonstrates excellent long-term durability of more than 2500 cycles in acidic media with a Tafel slope value of 62 mV dec-1.

Supported Molybdenum Carbide and Nitride Catalysts for Carbon Dioxide Hydrogenation.

Project description:Catalysts based on molybdenum carbide or nitride nanoparticles (2-5 nm) supported on titania were prepared by wet impregnation followed by a thermal treatment under alkane (methane or ethane)/hydrogen or nitrogen/hydrogen mixture, respectively. The samples were characterized by elemental analysis, volumetric adsorption of nitrogen, X-ray diffraction, and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. They were evaluated for the hydrogenation of CO2 in the 2-3 MPa and 200-300°C ranges using a gas-phase flow fixed bed reactor. CO, methane, methanol, and ethane (in fraction-decreasing order) were formed on carbides, whereas CO, methanol, and methane were formed on nitrides. The carbide and nitride phase stoichiometries were tuned by varying the preparation conditions, leading to C/Mo and N/Mo atomic ratios of 0.2-1.8 and 0.5-0.7, respectively. The carbide activity increased for lower carburizing alkane concentration and temperature, i.e., lower C/Mo ratio. Enhanced carbide performances were obtained with pure anatase titania support as compared to P25 (anatase/rutile) titania or zirconia, with a methanol selectivity up to 11% at 250°C. The nitride catalysts appeared less active but reached a methanol selectivity of 16% at 250°C.

Ultrafine α-Phase Molybdenum Carbide Decorated with Platinum Nanoparticles for Efficient Hydrogen Production in Acidic and Alkaline Media.

Project description:The development of efficient electrocatalysts is important to produce clean and sustainable hydrogen fuel on a large scale. With respect to cathodic reactions, Pt exhibits an overwhelming electrocatalytic capability in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in comparison with other earth-abundant electrocatalysts, despite its rarity and high cost. So, a hybrid catalyst that combines a low-cost electrocatalyst with Pt would balance cost-effectiveness with catalytic activity. Herein, α-phase molybdenum carbide (MoC1- x ) nanoparticles (NPs) decorated with a small amount of Pt (MoC1- x /Pt-NPs) are designed to achieve high-performance hydrogen production in acidic and alkaline media. MoC1- x -NPs exhibit good electrocatalytic HER activity as well as stability and durability. They show favorable catalytic kinetics in an alkaline medium, suggesting an active water dissociation process. After Pt decoration, Pt-NPs that are 2-3 nm in diameter are well incorporated with MoC1- x -NPs. MoC1- x /Pt-NPs with a small amount of Pt (2.7-3 wt%) and are able to perform superior electrocatalytic HER activity, and possess stability and durability that is comparable to that of commercial Pt/C. Notably, they exhibit a higher intrinsic catalytic activity compared to that of Pt/C in an alkaline medium, indicating that they promote the sluggish catalytic kinetics of Pt in alkaline medium.

Pt nanoparticles-decorated molybdenum nitrides for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:Exploring low cost and high efficiency catalysts for hydrogen production from electrochemical water splitting is preferable and remains a significant challenge. As an alternative to Pt-based catalysts, molybdenum nitrides have attracted more attention for their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, their performance is restricted due to the strong bonding of Mo-H. Herein, molybdenum nitrides with Pt-doping are fabricated to enhance the catalytic activity for HER in acidic solution. As expected, Pt (5 wt%)-MoNx delivers a low overpotential of 47 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a high exchange current density (j0 = 0.98 mA cm-2). The superior performance is attributed to the modified electronic structure of Mo with Pt incorporation.

Coupled molybdenum carbide and reduced graphene oxide electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Electrochemical water splitting is one of the most economical and sustainable methods for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the development of low-cost and earth-abundant non-noble-metal catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction remains a challenge. Here we report a two-dimensional coupled hybrid of molybdenum carbide and reduced graphene oxide with a ternary polyoxometalate-polypyrrole/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite as a precursor. The hybrid exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction and excellent stability in acidic media, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the best among these reported non-noble-metal catalysts. Theoretical calculations on the basis of density functional theory reveal that the active sites for hydrogen evolution stem from the pyridinic nitrogens, as well as the carbon atoms, in the graphene. In a proof-of-concept trial, an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution is fabricated, which may open new avenues for the design of nanomaterials utilizing POMs/conducting polymer/reduced-graphene oxide nanocomposites.

Electrochemically Synthesized Nanoporous Molybdenum Carbide as a Durable Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Demands for sustainable production of hydrogen are rapidly increasing because of environmental considerations for fossil fuel consumption and development of fuel cell technologies. Thus, the development of high-performance and economical catalysts has been extensively investigated. In this study, a nanoporous Mo carbide electrode is prepared using a top-down electrochemical process and it is applied as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Anodic oxidation of Mo foil followed by heat treatment in a carbon monoxide (CO) atmosphere forms a nanostructured Mo carbide with excellent interconnections, and these structural characteristics lead to high activity and durability when applied to the HER. Additionally, characteristic behavior of Mo is observed; metallic Mo nanosheets form during electrochemical anodization by exfoliation along the (110) planes. These nanosheets are viable for chemical modification, indicating their feasibility in various applications. Moreover, the role of carbon shells is investigated on the surface of the electrocatalysts, whereby it is suggested that carbon shells serve as a mechanical barrier against the oxidative degradation of catalysts that accompanies unavoidable volume expansion.

Carbon Nanotube Supported Molybdenum Carbide as Robust Electrocatalyst for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Molybdenum carbide is considered to be one of the most competitive catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) regarding its high catalytic activity and superior corrosion resistance. But the low electrical conductivity and poor interfacial contact with the current collector greatly inhibit its practical application capability. Herein, carbon nanotube (CNT) supported molybdenum carbide was assembled via electrostatic adsorption combined with complex bonding. The N-doped molybdenum carbide nanocrystals were uniformly anchored on the surfaces of amino CNTs, which depressed the agglomeration of nanoparticles while strengthening the migration of electrons. The optimized catalyst (250-800-2h) showed exceptional electrocatalytic performance towards HER under both acidic and alkaline conditions. Especially in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, the 250-800-2h catalyst exhibited a low overpotential of 136 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 (η10) with the Tafel slope of 49.9 mV dec-1, and the overpotential only increased 8 mV after 20,000 cycles of stability test. The active corrosive experiment revealed that more exposure to high-activity γ-Mo2N promoted the specific mass activity of Mo, thus, maintaining the catalytic durability of the catalyst.

Nickel-molybdenum nitride nanoplate electrocatalysts for concurrent electrolytic hydrogen and formate productions.

Project description:Hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting is an efficient and economical technology, however, is severely impeded by the kinetic-sluggish and low value-added anodic oxygen evolution reaction. Here we report the nickel-molybdenum-nitride nanoplates loaded on carbon fiber cloth (Ni-Mo-N/CFC), for the concurrent electrolytic productions of high-purity hydrogen at the cathode and value-added formate at the anode in low-cost alkaline glycerol solutions. Especially, when equipped with Ni-Mo-N/CFC at both anode and cathode, the established electrolyzer requires as low as 1.36 V of cell voltage to achieve 10 mA cm-2, which is 260 mV lower than that in alkaline aqueous solution. Moreover, high Faraday efficiencies of 99.7% for H2 evolution and 95.0% for formate production have been obtained. Based on the excellent electrochemical performances of Ni-Mo-N/CFC, electrolytic H2 and formate productions from the alkaline glycerol solutions are an energy-efficient and promising technology for the renewable and clean energy supply in the future.

Porous molybdenum carbide nano-octahedrons synthesized via confined carburization in metal-organic frameworks for efficient hydrogen production.

Project description:Electrochemical water splitting has been considered as a promising approach to produce clean and sustainable hydrogen fuel. However, the lack of high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction hinders the large-scale application. As a new class of porous materials with tunable structure and composition, metal-organic frameworks have been considered as promising candidates to synthesize various functional materials. Here we demonstrate a metal-organic frameworks-assisted strategy for synthesizing nanostructured transition metal carbides based on the confined carburization in metal-organic frameworks matrix. Starting from a compound consisting of copper-based metal-organic frameworks host and molybdenum-based polyoxometalates guest, mesoporous molybdenum carbide nano-octahedrons composed of ultrafine nanocrystallites are successfully prepared as a proof of concept, which exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen production from both acidic and basic solutions. The present study provides some guidelines for the design and synthesis of nanostructured electrocatalysts.

In situ synthesis of molybdenum carbide/N-doped carbon hybrids as an efficient hydrogen-evolution electrocatalyst.

Project description:The development of non-precious metal based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received more and more attention over recent years owing to energy and environmental issues, and Mo based materials have been explored as a promising candidate. In this work, molybdenum carbide/N-doped carbon hybrids (Mo2C@NC) were synthesized facilely via one-step high-temperature pyrolysis by adjusting the mass ratio of urea and ammonium molybdate. The Mo2C@NC consisted of ultrasmall nanoparticles encapsulated by N-doped carbon, which had high specific surface area. They all exhibited efficient HER activity, and the Mo2C@NC with a mass ratio of 160 (Mo2C@NC-160) showed the best HER activity, with a low overpotential of 90 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 50 mV dec-1, which was one of the most active reported Mo2C-based electrocatalysts. The excellent HER activity of Mo2C@NC-160 was attributed to the following features: (1) the highly dispersed ultrasmall Mo2C nanoparticles, which exhibited high electrochemically active surface areas; (2) the synergistic effect of the N-doped carbon shell/matrix, which facilitated the electron transport.

Enhanced Electrochemical Behavior of Peanut-Shell Activated Carbon/Molybdenum Oxide/Molybdenum Carbide Ternary Composites.

Project description:Biomass-waste activated carbon/molybdenum oxide/molybdenum carbide ternary composites are prepared using a facile in-situ pyrolysis process in argon ambient with varying mass ratios of ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate to porous peanut shell activated carbon (PAC). The formation of MoO2 and Mo2C nanostructures embedded in the porous carbon framework is confirmed by extensive structural characterization and elemental mapping analysis. The best composite when used as electrodes in a symmetric supercapacitor (PAC/MoO2/Mo2C-1//PAC/MoO2/Mo2C-1) exhibited a good cell capacitance of 115 F g-1 with an associated high specific energy of 51.8 W h kg-1, as well as a specific power of 0.9 kW kg-1 at a cell voltage of 1.8 V at 1 A g-1. Increasing the specific current to 20 A g-1 still showcased a device capable of delivering up to 30 W h kg-1 specific energy and 18 kW kg-1 of specific power. Additionally, with a great cycling stability, a 99.8% coulombic efficiency and capacitance retention of ~83% were recorded for over 25,000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at 10 A g-1. The voltage holding test after a 160 h floating time resulted in increase of the specific capacitance from 74.7 to 90 F g-1 at 10 A g-1 for this storage device. The remarkable electrochemical performance is based on the synergistic effect of metal oxide/metal carbide (MoO2/Mo2C) with the interconnected porous carbon. The PAC/MoO2/Mo2C ternary composites highlight promising Mo-based electrode materials suitable for high-performance energy storage. Explicitly, this work also demonstrates a simple and sustainable approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of porous carbon materials.
