Cerebral edema is exacerbated in diabetic ischemic stroke through poorly understood mechanisms. We showed previously that blood-brain barrier (BBB) Na-K-Cl cotransport (NKCC) and Na/H exchange (NHE) are major contributors to edema formation in normoglycemic ischemic stroke.
