Nipah virus is an emerging pathogen in the <i>Paramyxoviridae</i> family. Upon transmission of Nipah virus from its natural reservoir, <i>Pteropus</i> spp. fruit bats, to humans, it causes respiratory and neurological disease with a case-fatality rate about 70%.
