The generic allocation of <i>Helix subaperta</i> is clarified by using genetic data and morphological traits of the genital organs; its position within the hitherto monotypic genus <i>Cantareus</i> is corroborated. Further analysis of several specimens of <i>Cantareus apertus</i> from Algeria and Italy revealed that this taxon is composed of two species, <i>C. apertus</i> from Italy, and <i>C. koraegaelius</i> from Algeria.
