Hexacyano Ferrate (III) Reduction by Electron Transfer Induced by Plasmonic Catalysis on Gold Nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT: Redox reactions are of great importance in environmental catalysis. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) have attracted much attention because of their catalytic activity and their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). In the present study, we investigated, in detail, the reduction of ferricyanide (III) ion into a ferrocyanide (II) ion catalyzed by spherical gold nanoparticles of two different sizes, 15 nm and 30 nm, and excited at their LSPR band. Experiments were conducted in the presence (or absence) of sodium thiosulfate. This catalysis is enhanced in the presence of Au- NPs under visible light excitation. This reduction also takes place even without sodium thiosulfate. Our results demonstrate the implication of hot electrons in this reduction.

Quantitative Evaluation of Nanosecond Pulsed Laser-Induced Photomodification of Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticles.

Project description:The rapid growth of gold nanoparticle applications in laser therapeutics and diagnostics has brought about the need for establishing innovative standardized test methods for evaluation of safety and performance of these technologies and related medical products. Furthermore, given the incomplete and inconsistent data on nanoparticle photomodification thresholds provided in the literature, further elucidation of processes that impact the safety and effectiveness of laser-nanoparticle combination products is warranted. Therefore, we present a proof-of-concept study on an analytical experimental test methodology including three approaches (transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and spectrophotometry) for experimental evaluation of damage thresholds in nanosecond pulsed laser-irradiated gold nanospheres, and compared our results with a theoretical model and prior studies. This thorough evaluation of damage threshold was performed based on irradiation with a 532?nm nanosecond-pulsed laser over a range of nanoparticle diameters from 20 to 100?nm. Experimentally determined damage thresholds were compared to a theoretical heat transfer model of pulsed laser-irradiated nanoparticles and found to be in reasonably good agreement, although some significant discrepancies with prior experimental studies were found. This study and resultant dataset represent an important foundation for developing a standardized test methodology for determination of laser-induced nanoparticle damage thresholds.

Visualizing Ultrafast Electron Transfer Processes in Semiconductor-Metal Hybrid Nanoparticles: Toward Excitonic-Plasmonic Light Harvesting.

Project description:Recently, it was demonstrated that charge separation in hybrid metal-semiconductor nanoparticles (HNPs) can be obtained following photoexcitation of either the semiconductor or of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the metal. This suggests the intriguing possibility of photocatalytic systems benefiting from both plasmon and exciton excitation, the main challenge being to outcompete other ultrafast relaxation processes. Here we study CdSe-Au HNPs using ultrafast spectroscopy with high temporal resolution. We describe the complete pathways of electron transfer for both semiconductor and LSPR excitation. In the former, we distinguish hot and band gap electron transfer processes in the first few hundred fs. Excitation of the LSPR reveals an ultrafast (<30 fs) electron transfer to CdSe, followed by back-transfer from the semiconductor to the metal within 210 fs. This study establishes the requirements for utilization of the combined excitonic-plasmonic contribution in HNPs for diverse photocatalytic applications.

Enabling Self-Induced Back-Action Trapping of Gold Nanoparticles in Metamaterial Plasmonic Tweezers.

Project description:The pursuit for efficient nanoparticle trapping with low powers has led to optical tweezers technology moving from the conventional free-space configuration to advanced plasmonic systems. However, trapping nanoparticles smaller than 10 nm still remains a challenge even for plasmonic tweezers. Proper nanocavity design and excitation has given rise to the self-induced back-action (SIBA) effect offering enhanced trap stiffness with decreased laser power. In this work, we investigate the SIBA effect in metamaterial tweezers and its synergy with the exhibited Fano resonance. We demonstrate stable trapping of 20 nm gold particles with trap stiffnesses as high as 4.18 ± 0.2 (fN/nm)/(mW/μm2) and very low excitation intensity. Simulations reveal the existence of two different groups of hotspots on the plasmonic array. The two hotspots exhibit tunable trap stiffnesses, a unique feature that can allow for sorting of particles and biological molecules based on their characteristics.

Gold Nanoclusters: Bridging Gold Complexes and Plasmonic Nanoparticles in Photophysical Properties.

Project description:Recent advances in the determination of crystal structures and studies of optical properties of gold nanoclusters in the size range from tens to hundreds of gold atoms have started to reveal the grand evolution from gold complexes to nanoclusters and further to plasmonic nanoparticles. However, a detailed comparison of their photophysical properties is still lacking. Here, we compared the excited state behaviors of gold complexes, nanolcusters, and plasmonic nanoparticles, as well as small organic molecules by choosing four typical examples including the Au10 complex, Au25 nanocluster (1 nm metal core), 13 diameter Au nanoparticles, and Rhodamine B. To compare their photophysical behaviors, we performed steady-state absorption, photoluminescence, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic measurements. It was found that gold nanoclusters behave somewhat like small molecules, showing both rapid internal conversion (<1 ps) and long-lived excited state lifetime (about 100 ns). Unlike the nanocluster form in which metal-metal transitions dominate, gold complexes showed significant charge transfer between metal atoms and surface ligands. Plasmonic gold nanoparticles, on the other hand, had electrons being heated and cooled (~100 ps time scale) after photo-excitation, and the relaxation was dominated by electron-electron scattering, electron-phonon coupling, and energy dissipation. In both nanoclusters and plasmonic nanoparticles, one can observe coherent oscillations of the metal core, but with different fundamental origins. Overall, this work provides some benchmarking features for organic dye molecules, organometallic complexes, metal nanoclusters, and plasmonic nanoparticles.

Microfluidic Reactors for Plasmonic Photocatalysis Using Gold Nanoparticles.

Project description:This work reports a microfluidic reactor that utilizes gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible light. The bottom of microchamber has a TiO2 film covering a layer of AuNPs (namely, TiO2/AuNP film) deposited on the F-doped SnO2 (FTO) substrate. The rough surface of FTO helps to increase the surface area and the AuNPs enables the strong absorption of visible light to excite electron/hole pairs, which are then transferred to the TiO2 film for photodegradation. The TiO2 film also isolates the AuNPs from the solution to avoid detachment and photocorrosion. Experiments show that the TiO2/AuNP film has a strong absorption over 400-800 nm and enhances the reaction rate constant by 13 times with respect to the bare TiO2 film for the photodegradation of methylene blue. In addition, the TiO2/AuNP microreactor exhibits a negligible reduction of photoactivity after five cycles of repeated tests, which verifies the protective function of the TiO2 layer. This plasmonic photocatalytic microreactor draws the strengths of microfluidics and plasmonics, and may find potential applications in continuous photocatalytic water treatment and photosynthesis. The fabrication of the microreactor uses manual operation and requires no photolithography, making it simple, easy, and of low cost for real laboratory and field tests.

Web-based computational chemistry education with CHARMMing III: Reduction potentials of electron transfer proteins.

Project description:A module for fast determination of reduction potentials, E°, of redox-active proteins has been implemented in the CHARMM INterface and Graphics (CHARMMing) web portal (www.charmming.org). The free energy of reduction, which is proportional to E°, is composed of an intrinsic contribution due to the redox site and an environmental contribution due to the protein and solvent. Here, the intrinsic contribution is selected from a library of pre-calculated density functional theory values for each type of redox site and redox couple, while the environmental contribution is calculated from a crystal structure of the protein using Poisson-Boltzmann continuum electrostatics. An accompanying lesson demonstrates a calculation of E°. In this lesson, an ionizable residue in a [4Fe-4S]-protein that causes a pH-dependent E° is identified, and the E° of a mutant that would test the identification is predicted. This demonstration is valuable to both computational chemistry students and researchers interested in predicting sequence determinants of E° for mutagenesis.

Plasmonic Nanocavities Enable Self-Induced Electrostatic Catalysis.

Project description:The potential of strong interactions between light and matter remains to be further explored within a chemical context. Towards this end herein we study the electromagnetic interaction between molecules and plasmonic nanocavities. By means of electronic structure calculations, we show that self-induced catalysis emerges without any external stimuli through the interaction of the molecular permanent and fluctuating dipole moments with the plasmonic cavity modes. We also exploit this scheme to modify the transition temperature T1/2 of spin-crossover complexes as an example of how strong light-matter interactions can ultimately be used to control a materials responses.

Role of Valence Band States and Plasmonic Enhancement in Electron-Transfer-Induced Transformation of Nitrothiophenol.

Project description:Hot-electron-induced reactions are more and more recognized as a critical and ubiquitous reaction in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the kinetics of these reactions is still poorly understood, which is also due to the complexity of plasmonic nanostructures. We determined the reaction rates of the hot-electron-mediated reaction of 4-nitrothiophenol (NTP) on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using fractal kinetics as a function of the laser wavelength and compared them with the plasmonic enhancement of the system. The reaction rates can be only partially explained by the plasmonic response of the NPs. Hence, synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of isolated NTP-capped AuNP clusters have been performed for the first time. In this way, it was possible to determine the work function and the accessible valence band states of the NP systems. The results show that besides the plasmonic enhancement, the reaction rates are strongly influenced by the local density of the available electronic states of the system.

Cysteine-encoded chirality evolution in plasmonic rhombic dodecahedral gold nanoparticles.

Project description:Chiral plasmonic nanostructures have opened up unprecedented opportunities in optical applications. We present chirality evolution in nanoparticles focusing on the crystallographic aspects and elucidate key parameters for chiral structure formation. From a detailed understanding of chirality formation, we achieved a morphology (432 Helicoid IV) of three-dimensionally controlled chiral plasmonic nanoparticles based on the rhombic dodecahedral shape. The role of the synthesis parameters, seed, cysteine, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and ascorbic acid on chiral formation are studied, and based on this understanding, the systematic control of the chiral structure is presented. The relation between the modulated chiral structure factors and optical response is further elucidated by electromagnetic simulation. Importantly, a new optical response is achieved by assembling chiral nanoparticles into a film. This comprehensive study of chiral nanoparticles will provide valuable insight for the further development of diverse chiral plasmonic nanostructures with fascinating properties.

Encapsidation of Different Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticles by the CCMV CP.

Project description:Different types of gold nanoparticles have been synthesized that show great potential in medical applications such as medical imaging, bio-analytical sensing and photothermal cancer therapy. However, their stability, polydispersity and biocompatibility are major issues of concern. For example, the synthesis of gold nanorods, obtained through the elongated micelle process, produce them with a high positive surface charge that is cytotoxic, while gold nanoshells are unstable and break down in a few weeks due to the Ostwald ripening process. In this work, we report the self-assembly of the capsid protein (CP) of cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV) around spherical gold nanoparticles, gold nanorods and gold nanoshells to form virus-like particles (VLPs). All gold nanoparticles were synthesized or treated to give them a negative surface charge, so they can interact with the positive N-terminus of the CP leading to the formation of the VLPs. To induce the protein self-assembly around the negative gold nanoparticles, we use different pH and ionic strength conditions determined from a CP phase diagram. The encapsidation with the viral CP will provide the nanoparticles better biocompatibility, stability, monodispersity and a new biological substrate on which can be introduced ligands toward specific cells, broadening the possibilities for medical applications.
