Development of superluminal pulse propagation in a serial array of high-Q ring resonators.

ABSTRACT: We experimentally examined the development of superluminal pulse propagation through a serial array of high-Q ring resonators that provides a dynamic recurrent loop. As the propagation distance, i.e., the number of ring resonators that the pulses passed through increased, the pulse advancement increased linearly, largely maintaining its Gaussian shape. The sharp edge encoded at the front of the pulse was, however, neither advanced nor delayed, in good accordance with the idea that information propagates at the speed of light. We also carried out a numerical simulation on the superluminal to subluminal transition of the pulse velocity, which appeared after the pulse had propagated a long distance. The time delays, which we calculated using the saddle point method and based on the net delay, were in good agreement with our results, even when predictions based on the traditional group delay failed completely. This demonstrates the superluminal to subluminal transition of the propagation velocity.

Stretched-Pulse Soliton Kerr Resonators.

Project description:Kerr resonators support novel nonlinear wave phenomena including technologically important optical solitons. Fiber Kerr resonator solitons enable wavelength and repetition-rate versatile femtosecond-pulse and frequency-comb generation. However, key performance parameters, such as pulse duration, lag behind those from traditional mode-locked laser-based sources. Here we present new pulse generation in dispersion-managed Kerr resonators based on stretched-pulse solitons, which support the shortest pulses to date from a fiber Kerr resonator. In contrast to established Kerr resonator solitons, stretched-pulse solitons feature Gaussian temporal profiles that stretch and compress each round trip. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations. The dependence on dispersion and drive power are detailed theoretically and experimentally and design guidelines are presented for optimizing performance. Kerr resonator stretched-pulse solitons represent a new stable nonlinear waveform and a promising technique for femtosecond pulse generation.

Active mid-infrared ring resonators.

Project description:High-quality optical ring resonators can confine light in a small volume and store it for millions of roundtrips. They have enabled the dramatic size reduction from laboratory scale to chip level of optical filters, modulators, frequency converters, and frequency comb generators in the visible and the near-infrared. The mid-infrared spectral region (3-12 μm), as important as it is for molecular gas sensing and spectroscopy, lags behind in development of integrated photonic components. Here we demonstrate the integration of mid-infrared ring resonators and directional couplers, incorporating a quantum cascade active region in the waveguide core. It enables electrical control of the resonant frequency, its quality factor, the coupling regime and the coupling coefficient. We show that one device, depending on its operating point, can act as a tunable filter, a nonlinear frequency converter, or a frequency comb generator. These concepts extend to the integration of multiple active resonators and waveguides in arbitrary configurations, thus allowing the implementation of purpose-specific mid-infrared active photonic integrated circuits for spectroscopy, communication, and microwave generation.

120-fs single-pulse generation from stretched-pulse fiber Kerr resonators.

Project description:Fiber Kerr resonators are simple driven resonators with desirable wavelength and repetition rate flexibility for generating ultrashort pulses for applications including telecommunications, biomedicine, and materials processing. However, fiber Kerr resonators to date often generate longer pulses and require more complicated techniques for generating single pulses than would be desirable for applications. Here we address these limits by demonstrating robust single-pulse performance supporting 120-fs pulse durations in fiber Kerr resonators based on stretched-pulse solitons. Through matching numerical and experimental studies, stretched-pulse soliton performance is found to strongly depend on the total cavity length, and the optimum length is found to depend on the drive, Raman scattering, and the total pulse stretching. The bandwidth increases with decreasing net dispersion, enabled by shorter total cavity lengths. In a cavity with an optimized length and the described setup, stable stretched-pulse solitons corresponding to 120-fs duration are experimentally observed. In addition, soliton trapping is demonstrated with a pulsed drive source despite large intracavity breathing, and single-pulse performance is observed. Robust with high performance single-pulse generation is a critical step toward useful femtosecond pulse generation.

Nanoporous polymer ring resonators for biosensing.

Project description:Optically resonant devices are promising as label-free biomolecular sensors due to their ability to concentrate electromagnetic energy into small mode volumes and their capacity for multiplexed detection. A fundamental limitation of current optical biosensor technology is that the biomolecular interactions are limited to the surface of the resonant device, while the highest intensity of electromagnetic energy is trapped within the core. In this paper, we present nanoporous polymer optofluidic devices consisting of ring resonators coupled to bus waveguides. We report a 40% increase in polymer device sensitivity attributed to the addition of core energy- bioanalyte interactions.

Noncollinear and nonlinear pulse propagation.

Project description:A novel method for numerical modelling of noncollinear and nonlinear interaction of femtosecond laser pulses is presented. The method relies on a separate treatment of each of the interacting pulses by it's own rotated unidirectional pulse propagation equation (UPPE). We show that our method enables accurate simulations of the interaction of pulses travelling at a mutual angle of up to 140°. The limit is imposed by the unidirectionality principal. Additionally, a novel tool facilitating the preparation of noncollinear propagation initial conditions - a 3D Fourier transform based rotation technique - is presented. The method is tested with several linear and nonlinear cases and, finally, four original results are presented: (i) interference of highly chirped pulses colliding at mutual angle of 120°, (ii) optical switching through cross-focusing of perpendicular beams (iii) a comparison between two fluorescence up-conversion processes in BBO with large angles between the input beams and (iv) a degenerate four-wave mixing experiment in a boxcar configuration.

Conjugated topological interface-states in coupled ring resonators.

Project description:The optical properties of topological photonics have attracted much interest recently because its potential applications for robust unidirectional transmission that are immune to scattering at disorder. However, researches on topological series coupled ring resonators (T-SCRR) have been much less discussed. The existence of topological interface-states (TIS) in the T-SCRR is described for the first time in this article. An approach has been developed to achieve this goal via the band structure of dielectric binary ring resonators and the Zak phase of each bandgap. It is found that an ultra-high-Q with complete transmission is obtained by the conjugated topological series coupled ring resonators due to the excitation of conjugated topological interface-states, which is different from those in conventional TIS. Furthermore, the problem of transmission decreases resulting from high-Q increases in the traditional photonic system is significantly improved by this approach. These findings could pave a novel path for developing advanced high-Q filters, optical sensors, switches, resonators, communications and quantum information processors.

Record Purcell factors in ultracompact hybrid plasmonic ring resonators.

Project description:For integrated optical devices and traveling-wave resonators, realistic use of the superior wave-matter interaction offered by plasmonics is impeded by ohmic loss, which increases rapidly with mode volume reduction. In this work, we report composite hybrid plasmonic waveguides (CHPWs) that are not only capable of guiding subwavelength optical mode with long-range propagation but also unrestricted by stringent requirements in structural, material, or modal symmetry. In these asymmetric CHPWs, the versatility afforded by coupling dissimilar plasmonic modes provides improved fabrication tolerance and more degrees of device design optimization. Experimental realization of CHPWs demonstrates propagation loss and mode area of 0.03 dB/μm and 0.002 μm2, corresponding to the smallest combination among long-range plasmonic structures reported to date. CHPW ring resonators with 2.5-μm radius were realized with record Purcell factor compared with existing plasmonic and dielectric resonators of similar radii.

Near-Field Spectroscopy of Individual Asymmetric Split-Ring Terahertz Resonators.

Project description:Metamaterial resonators have become an efficient and versatile platform in the terahertz frequency range, finding applications in integrated optical devices, such as active modulators and detectors, and in fundamental research, e.g., ultrastrong light-matter investigations. Despite their growing use, characterization of modes supported by these subwavelength elements has proven to be challenging and it still relies on indirect observation of the collective far-field transmission/reflection properties of resonator arrays. Here, we present a broadband time-domain spectroscopic investigation of individual metamaterial resonators via a THz aperture scanning near-field microscope (a-SNOM). The time-domain a-SNOM allows the mapping and quantitative analysis of strongly confined modes supported by the resonators. In particular, a cross-polarized configuration presented here allows an investigation of weakly radiative modes. These results hold great potential to advance future metamaterial-based optoelectronic platforms for fundamental research in THz photonics.

Small footprint optoelectrodes using ring resonators for passive light localization.

Project description:The combination of electrophysiology and optogenetics enables the exploration of how the brain operates down to a single neuron and its network activity. Neural probes are in vivo invasive devices that integrate sensors and stimulation sites to record and manipulate neuronal activity with high spatiotemporal resolution. State-of-the-art probes are limited by tradeoffs involving their lateral dimension, number of sensors, and ability to access independent stimulation sites. Here, we realize a highly scalable probe that features three-dimensional integration of small-footprint arrays of sensors and nanophotonic circuits to scale the density of sensors per cross-section by one order of magnitude with respect to state-of-the-art devices. For the first time, we overcome the spatial limit of the nanophotonic circuit by coupling only one waveguide to numerous optical ring resonators as passive nanophotonic switches. With this strategy, we achieve accurate on-demand light localization while avoiding spatially demanding bundles of waveguides and demonstrate the feasibility with a proof-of-concept device and its scalability towards high-resolution and low-damage neural optoelectrodes.

Dynamic modulation of modal coupling in microelectromechanical gyroscopic ring resonators.

Project description:Understanding and controlling modal coupling in micro/nanomechanical devices is integral to the design of high-accuracy timing references and inertial sensors. However, insight into specific physical mechanisms underlying modal coupling, and the ability to tune such interactions is limited. Here, we demonstrate that tuneable mode coupling can be achieved in capacitive microelectromechanical devices with dynamic electrostatic fields enabling strong coupling between otherwise uncoupled modes. A vacuum-sealed microelectromechanical silicon ring resonator is employed in this work, with relevance to the gyroscopic lateral modes of vibration. It is shown that a parametric pumping scheme can be implemented through capacitive electrodes surrounding the device that allows for the mode coupling strength to be dynamically tuned, as well as allowing greater flexibility in the control of the coupling stiffness. Electrostatic pump based sideband coupling is demonstrated, and compared to conventional strain-mediated sideband operations. Electrostatic coupling is shown to be very efficient, enabling strong, tunable dynamical coupling.
