A Facile Synthesis of (PIM-Polyimide)-(6FDA-Durene-Polyimide) Copolymer as Novel Polymer Membranes for CO2 Separation.

ABSTRACT: Random copolymers made of both (PIM-polyimide) and (6FDA-durene-PI) were prepared for the first time by a facile one-step polycondensation reaction. By combining the highly porous and contorted structure of PIM (polymers with intrinsic microporosity) and high thermomechanical properties of PI (polyimide), the membranes obtained from these random copolymers [(PIM-PI)-(6FDA-durene-PI)] showed high CO2 permeability (>1047 Barrer) with moderate CO2/N2 (> 16.5) and CO2/CH4 (> 18) selectivity, together with excellent thermal and mechanical properties. The membranes prepared from three different compositions of two comonomers (1:4, 1:6 and 1:10 of x:y), all showed similar morphological and physical properties, and gas separating performance, indicating ease of synthesis and practicability for production in large scale. The gas separation performance of these membranes at various pressure ranges (100-1500 torr) was also investigated.

6FDA-DAM:DABA Co-Polyimide Mixed Matrix Membranes with GO and ZIF-8 Mixtures for Effective CO2/CH4 Separation.

Project description:This work presents the gas separation evaluation of 6FDA-DAM:DABA (3:1) co-polyimide and its enhanced mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with graphene oxide (GO) and ZIF-8 (particle size of <40 nm). The 6FDA-copolyimide was obtained through two-stage poly-condensation polymerization, while the ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized using the dry and wet method. The MMMs were preliminarily prepared with 1-4 wt.% GO and 5-15 wt.% ZIF-8 filler loading independently. Based on the best performing GO MMM, the study proceeded with making MMMs based on the mixtures of GO and ZIF-8 with a fixed 1 wt.% GO content (related to the polymer matrix) and varied ZIF-8 loadings. All the materials were characterized thoroughly using TGA, FTIR, XRD, and FESEM. The gas separation was measured with 50:50 vol.% CO2:CH4 binary mixture at 2 bar feed pressure and 25 °C. The pristine 6FDA-copolyimide showed CO2 permeability (PCO2) of 147 Barrer and CO2/CH4 selectivity (αCO2/CH4) of 47.5. At the optimum GO loading (1 wt.%), the PCO2 and αCO2/CH4 were improved by 22% and 7%, respectively. A combination of GO (1 wt.%)/ZIF-8 fillers tremendously improves its PCO2; by 990% for GO/ZIF-8 (5 wt.%) and 1.124% for GO/ZIF-8 (10 wt.%). Regrettably, the MMMs lost their selectivity by 16-55% due to the non-selective filler-polymer interfacial voids. However, the hybrid MMM performances still resided close to the 2019 upper bound and showed good performance stability when tested at different feed pressure conditions.

Synthesis and Performance of 6FDA-Based Polyimide-Ionenes and Composites with Ionic Liquids as Gas Separation Membranes.

Project description:Three new isomeric 6FDA-based polyimide-ionenes, with imidazolium moieties and varying regiochemistry (para-, meta-, and ortho- connectivity), and composites with three different ionic liquids (ILs) have been developed as gas separation membranes. The structural-property relationships and gas separation behaviors of the newly developed 6FDA polyimide-ionene + IL composites have been extensively studied. All the 6FDA-based polyimide-ionenes exhibited good compatibility with the ILs and produced homogeneous hybrid membranes with the high thermal stability of ~380 °C. Particularly, [6FDA I4A pXy][Tf2N] ionene + IL hybrids having [C4mim][Tf2N] and [Bnmim][Tf2N] ILs offered mechanically stable matrixes with high CO2 affinity. The permeability of CO2 was increased by factors of 2 and 3 for C4mim and Bnmim hybrids (2.15 to 6.32 barrers), respectively, compared to the neat [6FDA I4A pXy][Tf2N] without sacrificing their permselectivity for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 gas pairs.

Tailoring the Micropore Structure of 6FDA-Based Network Polyimide Membranes for Advanced Gas Separation by Decarboxylation.

Project description:The 6FDA-based network PI has attracted significant attention for gas separation. A facile strategy to tailor the micropore structure within the network PI membrane prepared by the in situ crosslinking method is extremely significant for achieving an advanced gas separation performance. In this work, the 4,4'-diamino-2,2'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (DCB) or 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) comonomer was incorporated into the 6FDA-TAPA network polyimide (PI) precursor via copolymerization. The molar content and the type of carboxylic-functionalized diamine were varied in order to easily tune the resulting network PI precursor structure. Then, these network PIs containing carboxyl groups underwent further decarboxylation crosslinking during the following heat treatment. Properties involving thermal stabilities, solubility, d-spacing, microporosity, and mechanical properties were investigated. Due to the decarboxylation crosslinking, the d-spacing and the BET surface areas of the thermally treated membranes were increased. Moreover, the content of DCB (or DABA) played a key role in determining the overall gas separation performance of the thermally treated membranes. For instance, after the heating treatment at 450 °C, 6FDA-DCB:TAPA (3:2) showed a large increment of about ~532% for CO2 gas permeability (~266.6 Barrer) coupled with a decent CO2/N2 selectivity~23.6. This study demonstrates that incorporating the carboxyl-containing functional unit into the PI backbone to induce decarboxylation offers a practical approach with which to tailor the micropore structure and corresponding gas transport properties of 6FDA-based network PIs prepared by the in situ crosslinking method.

Development of CO2-Selective Polyimide-Based Gas Separation Membranes Using Crown Ether and Polydimethylsiloxane.

Project description:A series of CO2-selective polyimides (CE-PDMS-PI-x) was synthesized by copolymerizing crown ether diamine (trans-diamino-DB18C6) and PDMS-diamine with 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) di-phthalic anhydride (6FDA) through the polycondensation reaction. The structural characteristics of the copolymers and corresponding membranes were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effect of PDMS loading on the CE-PDMS-PI-x copolymers was further analyzed and a very good structure-property relationship was found. A well-distributed soft PDMS unit played a key role in the membrane's morphology, in which improved CO2-separation performance was observed at a low PDMS content (5 wt %). In contrast, the fine-grained phase separation adversely affected the separation behavior at a certain level of PDMS loading, and the PDMS was found to provide a flexible gas-diffusion path, affecting only the permeability without changing the selective gas-separation performance for the copolymers with a PDMS content of 20% or above.

CO2/N2 Separation Properties of Polyimide-Based Mixed-Matrix Membranes Comprising UiO-66 with Various Functionalities.

Project description:Nanocrystalline UiO-66 and its derivatives (containing -NH2, -Br, -(OH)2) were developed via pre-synthetic functionalization and incorporated into a polyimide membrane to develop a mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) for CO2/N2 separation. Incorporation of the non-functionalized UiO-66 nanocrystals into the polyimide membrane successfully improved CO2 permeability, with a slight decrease in CO2/N2 selectivity, owing to its large accessible surface area. The addition of other functional groups further improved the CO2/N2 selectivity of the polymeric membrane, with UiO-66-NH2, UiO-66-Br, and UiO-66-(OH)2 demonstrating improvements of 12%, 4%, and 17%, respectively. Further evaluation by solubility-diffusivity analysis revealed that the functionalized UiO-66 in MMMs can effectively increase CO2 diffusivity while suppressing N2 sorption, thus, resulting in improved CO2/N2 selectivity. Such results imply that the structural tuning of UiO-66 by the incorporation of various functional groups is an effective strategy to improve the CO2 separation performance of MMMs.

Developing Mixed Matrix Membranes with Good CO2 Separation Performance Based on PEG-Modified UiO-66 MOF and 6FDA-Durene Polyimide.

Project description:The use of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) comprising metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the separation of CO2 from flue gas has gained recognition as an effective strategy for enhancing gas separation efficiency. When incorporating porous materials like MOFs into a polymeric matrix to create MMMs, the combined characteristics of each constituent typically manifest. Nevertheless, the inadequate dispersion of an inorganic MOF filler within an organic polymer matrix can compromise the compatibility between the filler and matrix. In this context, the aspiration is to develop an MMM that not only exhibits optimal interfacial compatibility between the polymer and filler but also delivers superior gas separation performance, specifically in the efficient extraction of CO2 from flue gas. In this study, we introduce a modification technique involving the grafting of poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) onto a UiO-66-NH2 MOF filler (referred to as PEG-MOF), aimed at enhancing its compatibility with the 6FDA-durene matrix. Moreover, the inherent CO2-philic nature of PEGDE is anticipated to enhance the selectivity of CO2 over N2 and CH4. The resultant MMM, incorporating 10 wt% of PEG-MOF loading, exhibits a CO2 permeability of 1671.00 Barrer and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 22.40. Notably, these values surpass the upper bound reported by Robeson in 2008.

Membranes of Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity PIM-1 for Gas Separation: Modification Strategies and Meta-Analysis.

Project description:Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have received considerable attention for making high-performance membranes for carbon dioxide separation over the last two decades, owing to their highly permeable porous structures. However, challenges regarding its relatively low selectivity, physical aging, and plasticisation impede relevant industrial adoptions for gas separation. To address these issues, several strategies including chain modification, post-modification, blending with other polymers, and the addition of fillers, have been developed and explored. PIM-1 is the most investigated PIMs, and hence here we review the state-of-the-arts of the modification strategies of PIM-1 critically and discuss the progress achieved for addressing the aforementioned challenges via meta-analysis. Additionally, the development of PIM-1-based thin film composite membranes is commented as well, shedding light on their potential in industrial gas separation. We hope that the review can be a timely snapshot of the relevant state-of-the-arts of PIMs guiding future design and optimisation of PIMs-based membranes for enhanced performance towards a higher technology readiness level for practical applications.

Greener Synthesis of the Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity PIM-1 for Gas Separation.

Project description:Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are studied as membranes for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly separation technologies, but greener polymerization methods are desirable for further scale up. This work aimed to synthesize the prototypical PIM (PIM-1) via a greener synthetic route by changing the solvent system to methyl-5-(dimethylamino)-2,2-dimethyl-5-oxopentanoate (MDDOP), a structural analogue of the green solvent Rhodiasolv PolarClean. Mass-based green metrics analysis was performed on MDDOP, determining atom economy, complete environmental factor, and total carbon intensity, comparing each to synthetic routes to PolarClean. Green metrics analysis found MDDOP synthesis produced less waste than PolarClean. MDDOP solvent capabilities were exemplified via PIM-1 polymerizations using 5,5',6,6'-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobisindane (TTSBI) with either tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTPN) or tetrachloroterephthalonitrile (TCTPN), varying the temperature (120-160 °C) and reaction duration (50 min-6 h). Recovery of methanol and MDDOP post PIM-1 synthesis reduced solvent waste by 22%. Reactions using TCTPN produced polymers with higher molar masses than those produced using TFTPN. All samples showed varied topology, with evidence of branching and colloidal network. The polymer from the most successful reaction conditions (TCTPN, T = 140 °C, 6 h) was fabricated into thick film membranes and tested with pure gases for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 gas pairs, performing comparably with PIM-1 synthesized using conventional solvent systems.

Piperazinium-mediated crosslinked polyimide-polydimethylsiloxane (PI-PDMS) copolymer membranes: the effect of PDMS content on CO2 separation.

Project description:We synthesized copolymers consisting mostly of physically stable rigid polyimide (PI) and a low content of highly permeable rubbery polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), that were crosslinked by CO2-philic ionic piperazinium groups attached to the side chains of the copolymers. These crosslinked copolymers (xPI-PDMSs) were fashioned into membranes that showed very high levels of thermochemical stability and excellent CO2 separation performance (P CO2 of 799 Barrer and CO2/N2 permselectivity of 15.7). The inclusion of the piperazinium groups not only endowed these xPI-PDMS membranes with increased selectivity for CO2, but also good resistance to CO2 plasticization. The effect of PDMS content on morphology and CO2 separation properties of xPI-PDMS was also investigated.

Synthesis and Transport Properties of Novel MOF/PIM-1/MOF Sandwich Membranes for Gas Separation.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were supported on polymer membrane substrates for the fabrication of composite polymer membranes based on unmodified and modified polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1). Layers of two different MOFs, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and Copper benzene tricarboxylate ((HKUST-1), were grown onto neat PIM-1, amide surface-modified PIM-1 and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) -modified PIM-1. The surface-grown crystalline MOFs were characterized by a combination of several techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy to investigate the film morphology on the neat and modified PIM-1 membranes. The pure gas permeabilities of He, H₂, O₂, N₂, CH₄, CO₂ were studied to understand the effect of the surface modification on the basic transport properties and evaluate the potential use of these membranes for industrially relevant gas separations. The pure gas transport was discussed in terms of permeability and selectivity, highlighting the effect of the MOF growth on the diffusion coefficients of the gas in the new composite polymer membranes. The results confirm that the growth of MOFs on polymer membranes can enhance the selectivity of the appropriately functionalized PIM-1, without a dramatic decrease of the permeability.
