DNA topoisomerases are considered consolidated druggable targets against diseases produced by trypanosomatids. Several reports indicated that indenoisoquinolines, a family of non-camptothecinic based topoisomerase poisons, have a strong leishmanicidal effect both in vitro and in vivo in murine models of visceral leishmaniasis.
