Project description:This data article presents the raw data used in the article "Experimental and analytical evaluation of exhaust air heat pumps in ventilation-based heating systems" [1]. The data set contains measurement results of a field monitoring on a residential exhaust air heat pump system (air-to-air heat pump) in Germany. This data could be used to investigate the dynamic behavior and performance of the exhaust air heat pump systems. The data set contains air temperature and humidity of all four sides of the heat pump unit. Moreover, the electrical consumption of the unit and the dynamic pressure difference on the exhaust side (as indication of the air volume rate) could be also found in the data set.

Project description:This document compiles the detailed experimental data and description of four different heat charging tests presented in Nordbeck et al. ([1]), which aimed at the basic performance characterization of a lab-scale prototype of a new scalable, cement based, sensible heat storage system. The data set contains transient distributed measurements of temperatures within the storage as well as measurements of the experimental boundary conditions (heat carrier fluid flow rates, charging and laboratory temperatures) at high temporal resolution. In addition, the geometrical configuration of the storage and its component parts as well as the associated thermal material parameters are specified. The presented data is useful to assess and compare storage characteristics (storage capacities, charging/discharging rates, energy efficiency, heat loss behaviour) of the new heat storage system. The data can also be used as a reference data set for the development and verification of numerical models of modular solid-liquid heat storages or other related geothermal systems such as ground source heat pumps or energy piles using helical heat exchangers.

Project description:Adsorption modules are the core components of thermally driven adsorption heat pumps and chillers. Due to the transient nature of the adsorption and desorption processes, usually complicated numerical models are used for prediction of efficiency and heat flow rates. In this research article, we suggest a radically simplified calculation based on splitting up the ad- and desorption half cycle into a transient, strongly non-isothermal switching phase and a quasi-isothermal phase. In the quasi-isothermal phase, the heat flow rates can be calculated with relationship between temperature effectiveness (ϵ) and number of transfer units (NTU). Effective thermal resistances account for the heat and mass transfer processes. The prediction quality of our simple calculation in terms of heat flow rates is within ±20% compared with experimental data of two different sorption modules. The suggested method and its experimental validation lay the foundation of a basic adsorption heat exchanger theory.

Project description:A great fraction (20-40%) of primary energy is required for building air conditioning, so the use of renewable energy sources is increasing. The geothermal energy for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems can be used considering an Earth-to-Air Heat eXchanger (EAHX). This work analyses the performance of an EAHX through a mathematical model (2D), as a function of diameter and length of the air ducts. The problem is solved with finite element method. A case study office building is analyzed. The air conditioning plant is characterized by fan-coil units and primary air; the EAHX is positioned upstream the Air Handling Unit (AHU) to pre-cool/pre-heat the air. The building is virtually placed initially in six Italian cities (different climatic zones according to Italian regulation DPR 412/93) and subsequently in eight worldwide cities according to Köppen climate classification. The following parameters are calculated: air temperature variation and thermal efficiency of the EAHX; the decreasing of cooling and heating capacity of the coils into the AHU. The best results refer to a duct length of 100 m for Ottawa (warm-summer humid continental climate, 65% capacity reduction), the worst ones for Rio de Janeiro (tropical wet and dry climate, maximum 24% reduction).

Project description:?-Barrel membrane proteins often fluctuate among various open substates, yet the nature of these transitions is not fully understood. Using temperature-dependent, single-molecule electrophysiology analysis, along with rational protein design, we show that OccK1, a member of the outer membrane carboxylate channel from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, features a discrete gating dynamics comprising both enthalpy-driven and entropy-driven current transitions. OccK1 was chosen for the analysis of these transitions, because it is a monomeric transmembrane ?-barrel of a known high-resolution crystal structure and displays three distinguishable, time-resolvable open substates. Native and loop-deletion OccK1 proteins showed substantial changes in the activation enthalpies and entropies of the channel transitions, but modest alterations in the equilibrium free energies, confirming that the system never departs from equilibrium. Moreover, some current fluctuations of OccK1 indicated a counterintuitive, negative activation enthalpy, which was compensated by a significant decrease in the activation entropy. Temperature scanning of the single-channel properties of OccK1 exhibited a thermally induced switch of the energetically most favorable open substate at the lowest examined temperature of 4 °C. Therefore, such a semiquantitative assessment of the current fluctuation dynamics not only demonstrates the complexity of channel gating but also reveals distinct functional traits of a ?-barrel outer membrane protein under different temperature circumstances.

Project description:Femtosecond (fs) laser processing can significantly alter the optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of materials. Here, we show that fs-laser processing transforms aluminum (Al) to a highly efficient and multipronged heat exchanger. By optimizing the formed surface nano- and microstructures, we increase the Al emissivity and surface area by 700% and 300%, respectively. Accordingly, we show that fs-laser treated Al (fs-Al) increases the radiative and convective cooling power of fs-Al by 2100% and 300%, respectively, at 200 °C. As a direct application, we use fs-Al as a heat sink for a thermoelectric generator (TEG) and demonstrate a 280% increase in the TEG output power compared to a TEG with an untreated Al heat exchanger at 200 °C. The multipronged enhancement in fs-Al heat exchange properties lead to an increase in the TEG output power over a wide temperature ( T ) range ( T>50°C ). Conversely, a simple radiative cooling heat exchanger increases the TEG output power within a limited temperature range (T>150°C) . We investigate the laser processing parameters necessary to maximize the spectral emissivity and surface area of fs-Al. Fs-Al promises to be a widely used and compact heat exchanger for passive cooling of computers and data centers as well as to increase the efficiency of TEGs incorporated in sensors and handheld electronics.

Project description:This paper is dedicated to the analysis of the improvement of heat transfer and the reduction of the pressure losses induced by the use of an active exchanger of millimeter size in a cooling loop. For pressure conditions imposed at the terminals of such a mini-channel whose upper wall is deformed by a progressive sinusoidal wave and for low Reynolds numbers (Re < 1000), we study the influence of the deformation parameters on the thermo-hydraulic performance of the exchanger (flow, heat transfer). The mechanical power applied to the deformed wall is connected to these parameters as well as to the pressure difference imposed by the external pump. The overall performance increases slightly with the value of the mechanical power up to a critical value for a given wall corrugation. Nevertheless, overall performance is up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than conventional static corrugated channels.

Project description:LNG floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a new type of floating production unit developed for offshore natural gas fields. It performs the functions of natural gas extraction, pretreatment, liquefaction, and storage. In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of a spiral-wound heat exchanger were studied using numerical simulations, which provides a basis for equipment selection and structural optimization of spiral-wound heat exchangers. The main research contents and conclusions are as follows. Under land-based simulation conditions, the heat transfer coefficient of the shell side of the spiral-wound heat exchanger decreases with an increase in the winding angle of the heat exchange tube, decreases with an increase in the spacing of the heat exchange tube, and increases with an increase in the outer diameter of the heat exchange tube. When the winding angle increased from 5° to 8°, the heat transfer coefficient decreased by 6.70%. The heat transfer coefficient of the shell side decreased by 13.21% when the heat exchange tube spacing increased from 14 to 17 mm. The heat transfer coefficient of the shell side increased by 22.89% when the outer diameter of the heat exchange tube increased from 9 to 12 mm. When the sloshing angle is constant, the heat transfer coefficient of the spiral-wound heat exchanger decreases with an increase in the winding angle and spacing of the heat exchange tubes, and increases with an increase in the outer diameter of the heat exchange tubes. When the structural parameters of the heat exchanger are constant, the heat transfer coefficient decreases as the sloshing angle increases. When the sloshing angle was less than 3°, the sloshing promoted heat transfer on the shell side. When the sloshing angle was higher than 7°, the heat transfer effect of the shell side deteriorated considerably, which weakened the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger. When the sloshing period is constant, the heat transfer coefficient of the wound heat exchanger decreases with an increase in the winding angle and spacing of the heat exchange tubes, and increases with an increase in the outer diameter of the heat exchange tubes. When the structural parameters of the heat exchanger are constant, the heat transfer coefficient increases with sloshing period. When the sloshing period was greater than 15 s, the influence of sloshing on the heat transfer on the shell side of the heat exchanger was relatively weak.

Project description:Rising temperatures are causing distress across the world, and for those most vulnerable, it is a silent killer. Information about indoor air temperature in residential dwellings is of interest for a range of reasons, such as health, thermal comfort and coping practices. However, there have been only few studies that measure indoor heat exposure, and contrast these to outdoor temperatures in rural-urban areas, of which none are in South Asia. We aim to close this knowledge gap with our indoor and outdoor heat measurement dataset, covering five low-income sites in South Asia. Two sites are in rural areas (Maharashtra, India), while three sites focus on urban areas (Dhaka, Delhi and Faisalabad). Data are based on 206 indoor temperature data loggers and complemented by data from five outdoor automated weather stations. The data-set can be used to examine temperature and humidity variation in low-socioeconomic status households in rural and urban areas and to better understand factors aggravating heat stress. This is important to plan and implement actions for combating heat stress.

Project description:BackgroundHelmet continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has been widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specific filters (i.e. High Efficiency Particulate Air filter: HEPA; Heat & Moisture Exchanger Filter: HMEF) were used to prevent Sars-CoV2 environmental dispersion and were connected to the CPAP helmet. However, HEPA and HMEF filters may act as resistors to expiratory gas flow and increase the levels of pressure within the hood.MethodsIn a bench-top study, we investigated the levels of airway pressure generated by different HEPA and HMEF filters connected to the CPAP helmet in the absence of a Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) valve and with two levels of PEEP (5 and 10 cmH2O). All steps were performed using 3 increasing levels of gas flow (60, 80, 100 L/min).ResultsThe use of 8 different commercially available filters significantly increased the pressure within the hood of the CPAP helmet with or without the use of PEEP valves. On average, the increase of pressure above the set PEEP ranged from 3 cmH2O to 10 cmH2O across gas flow rates of 60 to 100 L/min. The measure of airway pressure was highly correlated between the laboratory pressure transducer and the Helmet manometer. Bias with 95% Confidence Interval of Bias between the devices was 0.7 (-2.06; 0.66) cmH2O.ConclusionsThe use of HEPA and HMEF filters placed before the PEEP valve at the expiratory port of the CPAP helmet significantly increase the levels of airway pressure compared to the set level of PEEP. The manometer can detect accurately the airway pressure in the presence of HEPA and HMEF filters in the helmet CPAP and its use should considered.
