Automatization and stress analysis data of CoCr laser weld fatigue tests.

ABSTRACT: This work includes raw and analyzed test data when using a recently developed fatigue test method for miniature laser welds in cobalt-chromium (CoCr) alloy joints [1]: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2019.07.004. The automization of fatigue tests is crucial for saving costs and personnel resources and that is the reason why the atomization threshold and the resulting spectrum data related to CoCr welds are provided here. The finite element method based stress computation output is provided related to shearing-mode tests to support the dataset as a whole. In addition, the compositional data of the parent material and the laser weld are given.

Fatigue fracture of a cemented Omnifit CoCr femoral stem: implant and failure analysis.

Project description:A cemented, cast CoCr alloy, Omnifit Plus femoral stem was retrieved following mid-stem fracture after 24 years in vivo. The patient was an active 55-year-old male with a high body mass index (31.3) and no traumatic incidents before stem fracture. Fractographic and fatigue-based failure analyses were performed to illuminate the etiology of fracture and retrospectively predict the device lifetime. The fracture surfaces show evidence of a coarse grain microstructure, intergranular fracture, and regions of porosity. The failure analysis suggests that stems with similar metallurgical characteristics, biomechanical environments, and in vivo durations may be abutting their functioning lifetimes, raising the possibility of an increased revision burden.

Data of dynamic microscale strain distributions of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in dwell fatigue tests.

Project description:Dynamic microscale strain distributions with temporal resolution of 1 s in a smooth and a cracked Ti-6Al-4V alloys during one-cycle dwell fatigue tests are illustrated in videos (URL: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1pit_VV2apGOpETVfaJAAtL5Xl2CNOiJ3?usp=sharing). The tensile strain distributions were measured by the video sampling moiré method from the 1-μm-pitch grid images in a scanning electron microscope. The strain concentration factors of the smooth and the cracked specimens are 1.96 and 2.65, respectively. The plastic strain increment is 0.0007 during the displacement holding time of 591s in the smoothed specimen at maximum stress of 900 MPa., and 0.0008 during the displacement holding time of 593s in the cracked specimen at maximum stress of 870 MPa. The typical strain results are analyzed in 1-s-resolved strain mapping in Ti-6Al-4V alloys during dwell fatigue in SEM by video sampling moiré [1].

EBSD Investigation of the Microtexture of Weld Metal and Base Metal in Laser Welded Al⁻Li Alloys.

Project description:Autogenous laser welding of 5A90 Al⁻Li alloy sheets in a butt-joint configuration was carried out in this study. The microstructure characteristics of the weld metal and base metal in the horizontal surface and the transverse section of the welded joints were examined quantitatively using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique. The results show that the weld metal in the horizontal surface and the transverse section exhibits similar grain structural features including the grain orientations, grain shapes, and grain sizes, whereas distinct differences in the texture intensity and misorientation distributions are observed. However, the base metal in the horizontal surface and the transverse section of the joints reveals the obvious different texture characteristics in terms of the grain orientation, grain morphology, predominate texture ingredients, distribution intensities of textures, and grain boundary misorientation distribution, resulting in the diversity of the microhardness in the base metal and the softening of the weld metal. However, the degree of the drop in the hardness of the weld metal is highly correlated to the microtexture developed in the base metal.

Cognitive fatigue influences students' performance on standardized tests.

Project description:Using test data for all children attending Danish public schools between school years 2009/10 and 2012/13, we examine how the time of the test affects performance. Test time is determined by the weekly class schedule and computer availability at the school. We find that, for every hour later in the day, test performance decreases by 0.9% of an SD (95% CI, 0.7-1.0%). However, a 20- to 30-minute break improves average test performance by 1.7% of an SD (95% CI, 1.2-2.2%). These findings have two important policy implications: First, cognitive fatigue should be taken into consideration when deciding on the length of the school day and the frequency and duration of breaks throughout the day. Second, school accountability systems should control for the influence of external factors on test scores.

Prediction of the Weld Pool Stability by Material Flow Behavior of the Perforated Weld Pool.

Project description:This article presents the application of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) finite volume method (FVM) model for a thermo-mechanical coupling simulation of the weld pool used in variable polarity plasma arc welding (VPPAW). Based on the mechanism of the additional pressure produced through self-magnetic arc compression and the jet generated from mechanical plasma arc compression, and considering the influence of arc height and keyhole secondary compression on arc pressure, a three-dimensional transient model of variable polarity plasma arc (VPPA) arc pressure was established. The material flow behaviors of the perforated weld pools were studied. The results show that three kinds of flow behavior existed in the perforation weld pools and it is feasible to predict the weld pool stability by the material flow behaviors of the perforated weld pools. The weld pools can exist stably if the material flow in the bottom of the perforated weld pools can form confluences with moderate flow velocities of 0.45 m/s, 0.55 m/s and 0.60 m/s. The weld pools were cut when the material flowed downward and outward with the maximum velocity of 0.70 m/s, 0.80 m/s. When the maximum material flow velocity was 0.40 m/s, the weld pool collapsed downward under the action of larger gravity. The thermo-mechanical coupling model was verified by the comparison of the simulation and experimental results.

Hot tensile properties and constant load stress corrosion cracking test data of autogenous weld joints of super 304HCu stainless steel in boiling MgCl2 solution.

Project description:Hot tensile test data of Gas Tungsten Arc Welded (GTAW) autogenous joints of Super 304HCu tubes tested at their operating temperature are presented along with the microstructure of the weld joint. The GTAW joints exhibited lower tensile strength than the parent metal and the failure occurred in the weld metal region for all test temperatures. Constant load Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) test data of the GTAW weld joints tested in boiling MgCl2 environment at different applied stress level are presented. SCC curves obtained from the test were analyzed to derive SCC parameters such as rate of steady state elongation, the time required for set-in of tertiary region, and time to complete fracture. The fracture surfaces of SCC samples were examined using Scanning Electron Microscope to reveal the mode of fracture. Super 304HCu stainless steel being used as construction material for super heaters and reheaters of advanced ultra super critical boilers, this data will be an addition to the design data available for material selection in design of power plants.

Entropy Analysis of RR-Time Series From Stress Tests.

Project description:The RR-interval time series or tachograms obtained from electrocardiograms have been widely studied since they reflect the cardiac variability, and this is an indicative of the health status of a person. The tachogram can be seen as a highly non-linear and complex time series, and therefore, should be analyzed with non-linear techniques. In this work, several entropy measures, Sample Entropy (SampEn), Approximate Entropy (ApEn), and Fuzzy Entropy (FuzzyEn) are used as a measure of heart rate variability (HRV). Tachograms belonging to thirty-nine subjects were obtained from a cardiac stress test consisting of a rest period followed by a period of moderate physical activity. Subjects are grouped according to their physical activity using the IPAQ sedentary and active questionnaire, we work with youth and middle-aged adults. The entropy measures for each group show that for the sedentary subjects the values are high at rest and decrease appreciably with moderate physical activity, This happens for both young and middle-aged adults. These results are highly reproducible. In the case of the subjects that exercise regularly, an increase in entropy is observed or they tend to retain the entropy value that they had at rest. It seems that there is a possible correlation between the physical condition of a person with the increase or decrease in entropy during moderate physical activity with respect to the entropy at rest. It was also observed that entropy during longer physical activity tests tends to decrease as fatigue accumulates, but this decrease is small compared to the change that occurs when going from rest to physical activity.

High-Resolution Thermal Imaging and Analysis of TIG Weld Pool Phase Transitions.

Project description:Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is a well-established joining process and offers the user flexibility to weld a large range of materials. Ultra-thin turbine tipping is an important application for TIG welding that is exceptionally challenging due to the wide range of variables needed to accurately control the process: slope times, arc control, travel speed, etc. We offer new insight into weld pool characteristics, utilizing both on- and off-line measurements of weld tracks. High-resolution thermal imaging yields spatially and temporally resolved weld pool phase transitions coupled with post-weld photographs, which gives a novel perspective into the thermal history of a weld. Our imaging system is filtered to measure a 10 nm window at 950 nm and comprises a commercial Sigma lens to produce a near-infrared (NIR) camera. The measured near-infrared radiance is calibrated for temperature over the range of from 800 to 1350 °C.

Effect of Quenching Tempering-Post Weld Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Laser-Arc Hybrid-Welded Boron Steel.

Project description:In the present study, we have investigated the effect of post-welding heat treatment (PWHT) of quenching and tempering (QT) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded boron steel joints processed using laser-arc hybrid welding on two commercial filler materials, SM80 (Type-I) and ZH120 (Type-II). The microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld joints were characterized via optical microscopy, Vickers microhardness, and the uniaxial tensile test. The macrostructure of the weld joint was composed of a fusion zone (FZ), heat-affected zone (HAZ), and base metal zone (BMZ). After the QT-PWHT, the QT specimens revealed the V-shape hardness distribution across the weld joint, while the as-welded specimen exhibited the M-shape hardness distribution. As a result, the QT specimens revealed the premature fracture with little reduction in the area at the interface between the HAZ and FZ, while the as-welded specimen exhibited the local necking and rupture in the BMZ. In addition, the Type-II filler material with a greater value of equivalent carbon content was rarely influenced by the tempering, maintaining its hardness in the as-quenched status, while the Type-I filler material showed a gradual decrease in hardness with the tempering time. The results demonstrate that the Type-II weld joint outperformed the Type-I weld joint in terms of the structural integrity of welded parts.

Data-driven programmatic approach to analysis of basophil activation tests.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Conventional data analysis of flow cytometry-based basophil activation testing requires repetitive, labor-intensive analysis that hampers efforts to standardize testing for clinical applications. Using an open-source platform, we developed and implemented a programmatic approach to the analysis of the basophil activation test (BAT) by flow cytometry. METHODS:Using the BÜHLMANN FlowCAST® assay, peripheral blood from peanut allergic patients undergoing oral immunotherapy was incubated with peanut allergens (Arah1, Arah2, Arah6, whole peanut extract) and stained with fluorescent antibodies to CCR3 and CD63 for the development of a data-driven programmatic analysis using Bioconductor and R. Basophil identification using clustering and classification was validated using manually gated comparisons in an experimental subset. Reproducibility of CD63 upregulation set on unstimulated or anti-FcERI stimulated basophils was compared. RESULTS:BAT analysis of 294 experiments was successful in 91.5% using the above approach, with a total of 7,166 individual basophil activation tests from 269 experiments. We estimate this represents a net saving of 1340 min of labor by a skilled operator. Medium-based gating correlated to respective manual gating more closely than anti-FcERI based gating (R = 0.96 vs. R = 0.84, P < 0.001). Only 2% of the basophil activation results were significantly different from manual gating. Quality measures of the experiments and other measures of basophil activation were also provided by the analysis. CONCLUSIONS:We present a novel data-driven flow cytometric platform for the analysis of clinical basophil activation testing, providing a high throughput objective approach to basophil activation analysis. © 2017 International Clinical Cytometry Society.
