High-Yield Continuous-Flow Synthesis of Spheroidal C₆₀@Graphene Composites as Supercapacitors.

ABSTRACT: Graphene spheres confining fullerene C₆₀ are quantitatively formed under high-shear and continuous-flow processing using a vortex fluidic device (VFD). This involves intense micromixing a colloidal suspension of graphite in DMF and an o-xylene solution of C₆₀ at room temperature in the absence of surfactants and other auxiliary substances. The diameters of the composite spheres, C₆₀@graphene, can be controlled with size distributions ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 μm, depending on the VFD operating parameters, including rotational speed, flow rate, relative ratio of C₆₀ to graphite, and the concentration of fullerene. An electrode of the composite material has high cycle stability, with a high areal capacitance of 103.4 mF cm^-2, maintaining its capacitances to 24.7 F g^-1 and 86.4 mF cm^-2 (83.5%) at a high scan rate of 100 mV s^-1.

Template-assisted synthesis of NiCoO2 nanocages/reduced graphene oxide composites as high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors.

Project description:Here we reported a coordinating etching and precipitating method to synthesize a complex binary metal oxides hollow cubic structure. A novel NiCoO2/rGO composite with a structure of NiCoO2 nanocages anchored on layers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were synthesized via a simple template-assisted method and the electrochemical performance was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests as a faradaic electrode for supercapacitors at a graphene weight ratio of 1 wt% (1%). When used as electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors, the NiCoO2/rGO composites achieved a specific capacity of 1375 F g-1 at the current density of 1 A g-1 and maintained 742 F g-1 at 10 A g-1. After 3000 cycles, the supercapacitor based on these nanocage structures shows long-term cycling performance with a high capacity of 778 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. These outstanding electrochemical performances are primarily attributed to the special morphological structure and the combination of mixed transition metal oxides and rGO, which not only maintains a high electrical conductivity for the overall electrode but also prevents the aggregation and volume expansion of electrochemical materials during the cycling processes.

Glycol-Thermal Continuous Flow Synthesis of Graphene Gel.

Project description:Hydrothermal treatment of graphene oxide (GO) aqueous dispersion has been extensively applied to create graphene (a.k.a., chemically modified graphene, or reduced GO) hydrogels, which were dried to yield high-density graphene monoliths and powders with promising potential for electrochemical energy storage applications. Here, we demonstrated a glycol-thermal route that allows the preparation of a graphene gel at around 150 °C, which is below the boiling point of ethylene glycol (EG) and thus eliminates the need for a sealed pressurized reaction vessel. As a result, flow synthesis can be achieved by flowing a GO dispersion in EG through a Teflon tube immersed in a preheated oil bath for continuous production of a graphene gel, which, upon drying, shrinks to yield a densified graphene solid.

Hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured graphene/polyaniline composites as high-capacitance electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Project description:As known to all, hydrothermal synthesis is a powerful technique for preparing inorganic and organic materials or composites with different architectures. In this reports, by controlling hydrothermal conditions, nanostructured polyaniline (PANi) in different morphologies were composited with graphene sheets (GNS) and used as electrode materials of supercapacitors. Specifically, ultrathin PANi layers with total thickness of 10-20 nm are uniformly composited with GNS by a two-step hydrothermal-assistant chemical oxidation polymerization process; while PANi nanofibers with diameter of 50~100 nm are obtained by a one-step direct hydrothermal process. Benefitting from the ultrathin layer and porous structure, the sheet-like GNS/PANi composites can deliver specific capacitances of 532.3 to 304.9 F/g at scan rates of 2 to 50 mV/s. And also, this active material showed very good stability with capacitance retention as high as ~99.6% at scan rate of 50 mV/s, indicating a great potential for using in supercapacitors. Furthermore, the effects of hydrothermal temperatures on the electrochemical performances were systematically studied and discussed.

VO2(B) nanobelts/reduced graphene oxide composites for high-performance flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors.

Project description:Vanadium oxide has attracted extensive attention for electrochemical capacitors due to its wide range of versatility. However, due to the relative poor conductivity and chemical stability of vanadium oxide, severe losses of capacitance often occur during charge and discharge processes. Herein, a free-standing vanadium dioxide (VO2(B)) nanobelts/reduced graphene oxide (VO2/rGO) composite film was fabricated by assembly of VO2(B) nanobelts and rGO for supercapacitors. The flexible rGO sheets and VO2(B) nanobelts intertwined together to form a porous framework, which delivered a 353 F g-1 specific capacitance at 1 A g-1, and after 500 cycles, the specific capacitance retention rate was 80% due to the enhanced conductivity of the VO2(B) nanobelts by rGO and increased transport of ions and electrons by the porous structures. An all-solid-state symmetrical supercapacitor was assembled from the VO2/rGO composites, which exhibited good energy storage performance with a maximum voltage of 1.6 V. The maximum power density is 7152 W kg-1 at the energy density of 3.13 W h kg-1, ranking as one of the highest power densities for reported materials. In addition, after 10000 cycles, it still has a specific capacitance retention rate of 78% at 10 A g-1.

Preparation of Graphene Oxide/La2Ti2O7 Composites with Enhanced Electrochemical Performances for Supercapacitors.

Project description:A series of graphene oxide (GO)/lanthanum titanate (La2Ti2O7, LTO) fiber composites were prepared through a hydrothermal method. The LTO fibers were homogeneously dispersed between the GO sheets. The structure and micromorphology of the GO/LTO composites were systematically studied. The composite exhibited a high specific capacitance of 900.6 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 in the 1 M H2SO4 and 10 wt % sucrose aqueous solution as the electrolyte. With the extended potential window of 1.8 V, the fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor device delivered a maximum energy density of 94.0 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 750.1 W kg-1. The GO/LTO composites could be promising materials for energy storage.

Layer-by-Layer Heterostructure of MnO2@Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites as High-Performance Electrodes for Supercapacitors.

Project description:In this paper, δ-MnO2 with layered structure was prepared by a facile liquid phase method, and exfoliated MnO2 nanosheet (e-MnO2) was obtained by ultrasonic exfoliation, whose surface was negatively charged. Then, positive charges were grafted on the surface of MnO2 nanosheets with a polycation electrolyte of polydiallyl dimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) in different concentrations. A series of e-MnO2@reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites were obtained by electrostatic self-assembly combined with hydrothermal chemical reduction. When PDDA was adjusted to 0.75 g/L, the thickness of e-MnO2 was ~1.2 nm, and the nanosheets were uniformly adsorbed on the surface of graphene, which shows layer-by-layer morphology with a specific surface area of ~154 m2/g. On account of the unique heterostructure, the composite exhibits good electrochemical performance as supercapacitor electrodes. The specific capacitance of e-MnO2-0.75@rGO can reach 456 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g in KOH electrolyte, which still remains 201 F/g at 10 A/g. In addition, the capacitance retention is 98.7% after 10000 charge-discharge cycles at 20 A/g. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device of e-MnO2-0.75@rGO//graphene hydrogel (GH) was assembled, of which the specific capacitance achieves 94 F/g (1 A/g) and the cycle stability is excellent, with a retention rate of 99.3% over 10000 cycles (20 A/g).

Recent Progress on Graphene/Polyaniline Composites for High-performance Supercapacitors.

Project description:Electrode materials are crucial for the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. In view of the high specific surface area, high conductivity of graphene nanosheets and the high pseudocapacitance of polyaniline (PANI), the combination of graphene with PANI has become a research hotspot. In this work, we summarize the recent advance on the synthesis of PANI and graphene/PANI composites, and their application in supercapacitors. The synthesis of PANI is the basis of preparing graphene/PANI composites, so we first introduce the synthesis methods of PANI. Then, the advances of two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) graphene/PANI composites are summarized according to the inherent feature of graphene. The 2D composites of pristine graphene and functionalized graphene with PANI are introduced separately; furthermore, the 3D composites are classified into three sections, including flexible graphene/PANI composites, graphene framework based composites, and printable graphene/PANI composites. At last, aiming at solving the current challenges of graphene/PANI composites, we put forward some strategies for preparing high performance graphene/PANI composite electrodes.

Facile Fabrication of MnO2/Graphene/Ni Foam Composites for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Project description:A novel MnO2/graphene/Ni foam electrode was fabricated via the impregnation and electrochemical deposition technique with Ni foams serving as substrates and graphene serving as a buffer layer for the enhanced conductivity of MnO2. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Compared with other methods, our strategy avoids using surfactants and high-temperature treatments. The electrodes exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, high capabilities, and a long cycle life. Various electrochemical properties were systematically studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the specific capacitance of the MnO2/graphene/Ni composite prepared at 1 mA cm-2 of electrodeposition could achieve a scan rate of 10 mV s-1 at 292.8 F g-1, which confirmed that the graphene layer could remarkably improve electron transfer at the electrolyte-electrode interface. The capacitance retention was about 90% after 5000 cycles. Additionally, a MnO2/graphene//graphene asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled and it exhibited a high-energy density of 91 Wh kg-1 as well as had an excellent power density of 400 W kg-1 at 1 A g-1. It is speculated that the strong adhesion between the graphene and MnO2 can provide a compact structure to enhance the mechanical stability, which can be applied as a new method for energy storage devices.

High Performance Graphene-C60 -Bismuth Telluride-C60 -Graphene Nanometer Thin Film Phototransistor with Adjustable Positive and Negative Responses.

Project description:Graphene is a promising candidate for the next-generation infrared array image sensors at room temperature due to its high mobility, tunable energy band, wide band absorption, and compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor process. However, it is difficult to simultaneously obtain ultrafast response time and ultrahigh responsivity, which limits the further improvement of graphene photoconductive devices. Here, a novel graphene/C60 /bismuth telluride/C60 /graphene vertical heterojunction phototransistor is proposed. The response spectral range covers 400-1800 nm; the responsivity peak is 106 A W-1 ; and the peak detection rate and peak response speed reach 1014 Jones and 250 µs, respectively. In addition, the regulation of positive and negative photocurrents at a gate voltage is characterized and the ionization process in impurities of the designed phototransistor at a low temperature is analyzed. Tunable bidirectional response provides a new degree of freedom for phototransistors' signal resolution. The analysis of the dynamic change process of impurity energy level is conducted to improve the device's performance. From the perspective of manufacturing process, the ultrathin phototransistor (20-30 nm) is compatible with functional metasurface to realize wavelength or polarization selection, making it possible to achieve large-scale production of integrated spectrometer or polarization imaging sensor by nanoimprinting process.

Facile Synthesis ZnS/ZnO/Ni(OH)2 Composites Grown on Ni Foam: A Bifunctional Materials for Photocatalysts and Supercapacitors.

Project description:A facile one-step hydrothermal reaction was employed to synthesis an integrated bifunctional composite composed by a network structure of ZnS/ZnO/Ni(OH)2 nanosheets with ZnS/ZnO nanospheres in situ growing on Ni foam. The synergistic effect of these three substances make the composite having both improved electrochemical performances and photocatalytic activity. The ZnS/ZnO/Ni(OH)2-4mmol shows a high specific capacitance of 1173.8 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, as well as good rate capability and relatively stable cyclability. Using as photocatalyst, the methyl orange dye in solution can be completely decomposed under ultraviolet-visible radiation in about 80 min. And the composite is easy to be repeatedly used because bulk Ni foam was used as a carrier. Such a bifunctional composite material provides a new insight for energy storage and utilization as well as the water pollution treatment.
