Expanded GGGGCC (G<sub>4</sub>C<sub>2</sub>) repeats in C9ORF72 cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). How RNAs containing expanded G<sub>4</sub>C<sub>2</sub> repeats are transcribed in human neurons is largely unknown.
