Chalcogen Bonding Catalysis of a Nitro-Michael Reaction.

ABSTRACT: Chalcogen bonding is the non-covalent interaction between Lewis acidic chalcogen substituents and Lewis bases. Herein, we present the first application of dicationic tellurium-based chalcogen bond donors in the nitro-Michael reaction between trans-?-nitrostyrene and indoles. This also constitutes the first activation of nitro derivatives by chalcogen bonding (and halogen bonding). The catalysts showed rate accelerations of more than a factor of 300 compared to strongly Lewis acidic hydrogen bond donors. Several comparison experiments, titrations, and DFT calculations support a chalcogen-bonding-based mode of activation of ?-nitrostyrene.

Carbonyl Activation by Selenium- and Tellurium-Based Chalcogen Bonding in a Michael Addition Reaction.

Project description:In the last years the use of chalcogen bonding-the noncovalent interaction involving electrophilic chalcogen centers-in noncovalent organocatalysis has received increased interest, particularly regarding the use of intermolecular Lewis acids. Herein, we present the first use of tellurium-based catalysts for the activation of a carbonyl compound (and only the second such activation by chalcogen bonding in general). As benchmark reaction, the Michael-type addition between trans-crotonophenone and 1-methylindole (and its derivatives) was investigated in the presence of various catalyst candidates. Whereas non-chalcogen-bonding reference compounds were inactive, strong rate accelerations of up to 1000 could be achieved by bidentate triazolium-based chalcogen bond donors, with product yields of >90?% within 2?h of reaction time. Organotellurium derivatives were markedly more active than their selenium and sulphur analogues and non-coordinating counterions like BArF 4 provide the strongest dicationic catalysts.

Supramolecular catalysis with ethers enabled by dual chalcogen bonding activation.

Project description:The activation of ethers by weak interactions is a long-standing objective in supramolecular catalysis, but yet it remains an underdeveloped topic. The obstacles towards solving this problem are prominent since it is difficult for a weak interaction to cleave a relatively strong C-O σ-bond and moreover, the ionic intermediate composing of an alkoxide ion and an electrophilic carbocation would deactivate weak interaction donors. Herein, we describe a distinctive activation mode, dual Se···π and Se···O bonding, that could activate benzylic as well as allylic ether C-O σ-bonds to achieve cyclization, coupling and elimination reactions. This dual Se···π and Se···O bonding catalysis approach could tolerate various alkoxide leaving groups, while the other representative weak interaction donors showed no catalytic activity.

Project description:A catalytic asymmetric method for the synthesis of polysubstituted chromans via an oxa-Michael-nitro-Michael reaction has been developed. The squaramide-catalyzed domino reaction of 2-hydroxynitrostyrenes with trans-β-nitroolefins produced chiral chromans with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee), diastereoselectivities (up to >20 : 1 dr), and moderate to good yields (up to 82%).

Does Oxygen Feature Chalcogen Bonding?

Project description:Using the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), together with Dunning's all-electron correlation consistent basis set aug-cc-pVTZ, we show that the covalently bound oxygen atom present in a series of 21 prototypical monomer molecules examined does conceive a positive (or a negative) ?-hole. A ?-hole, in general, is an electron density-deficient region on a bound atom M along the outer extension of the R-M covalent bond, where R is the reminder part of the molecule, and M is the main group atom covalently bonded to R. We have also examined some exemplar 1:1 binary complexes that are formed between five randomly chosen monomers of the above series and the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing Lewis bases in N2, PN, NH3, and OH2. We show that the O-centered positive ?-hole in the selected monomers has the ability to form the chalcogen bonding interaction, and this is when the ?-hole on O is placed in the close proximity of the negative site in the partner molecule. Although the interaction energy and the various other 12 characteristics revealed from this study indicate the presence of any weakly bound interaction between the monomers in the six complexes, our result is strongly inconsistent with the general view that oxygen does not form a chalcogen-bonded interaction.

Chalcogen bonding in the solid-state structures of 1,3-bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding donors.

Project description:1,3-Bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding catalysts were previously successfully applied in different benchmark reactions. In one of those examples, i.e. the activation of quinolines, sulfur- and selenium-based chalcogen-bonding catalysts showed comparable properties, which is unexpected, as the selenium-containing catalysts should show superior catalytic properties due to the increased polarizability of selenium compared to sulfur. Herein, we present four crystal structures of the respective 1,3-bis(benzimidazoliumyl)benzene-based chalcogen-bonding catalyst containing sulfur (3S) and selenium (3Se, three forms) as Lewis acidic centres. The sulfur-containing catalyst shows weaker chalcogen bonding compared to its selenium analogue, as well as anion-π interactions. The selenium-based analogues, on the other hand, show stronger chalcogen-bonding motifs compared to the sulfur equivalent, depending on the crystallization conditions, but in every case, the intermolecular interactions are comparable in strength. Other interactions, such as hydrogen bonding and anion-π, were also observed, but in the latter case, the interaction distances are longer compared to those of the sulfur-based equivalent. The solid-state structures could not further explain the high catalytic activity of the sulfur-containing catalysts. Therefore, a comparison of their σ-hole depths from density functional theory (DFT) gas-phase calculations was performed, which are again in line with the previously found properties in the solid-state structures.

Project description:In our studies, the organocatalytic 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between 2-nitrobenzofurans or 2-nitrobenzothiophene and N-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl-substituted isatin imines has been developed. The reaction has been realized by employing bifunctional organocatalysis, with the use of squaramide derivative being crucial for the stereochemical efficiency of the process. The usefulness of the cycloadducts obtained has been confirmed in selected transformations, including aromative and non-aromative removal of the nitro group.

Supramolecular macrocycles reversibly assembled by Te(…)O chalcogen bonding.

Project description:Organic molecules with heavy main-group elements frequently form supramolecular links to electron-rich centres. One particular case of such interactions is halogen bonding. Most studies of this phenomenon have been concerned with either dimers or infinitely extended structures (polymers and lattices) but well-defined cyclic structures remain elusive. Here we present oligomeric aggregates of heterocycles that are linked by chalcogen-centered interactions and behave as genuine macrocyclic species. The molecules of 3-methyl-5-phenyl-1,2-tellurazole 2-oxide assemble a variety of supramolecular aggregates that includes cyclic tetramers and hexamers, as well as a helical polymer. In all these aggregates, the building blocks are connected by Te(…)O-N bridges. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic experiments demonstrate that the two types of annular aggregates are persistent in solution. These self-assembled structures form coordination complexes with transition-metal ions, act as fullerene receptors and host small molecules in a crystal.

Methyl Scanning for Mechanochemical Chalcogen-Bonding Cascade Switches.

Project description:Chalcogen-bonding cascade switching was introduced recently to produce the chemistry tools needed to image physical forces in biological systems. In the original flipper probe, one methyl group appeared to possibly interfere with the cascade switch. In this report, this questionable methyl group is replaced by a hydrogen. The deletion of this methyl group in planarizable push-pull probes was not trivial because it required the synthesis of dithienothiophenes with four different substituents on the four available carbons. The mechanosensitivity of the resulting demethylated flipper probe was nearly identical to that of the original. Thus methyl groups in the switching region are irrelevant for function, whereas those in the twisting region are essential. This result supports the chalcogen-bonding cascade switching concept and, most importantly, removes significant synthetic demands from future probe development.

Catalysis with Pnictogen, Chalcogen, and Halogen Bonds.

Project description:Halogen- and chalcogen-based ?-hole interactions have recently received increased interest in non-covalent organocatalysis. However, the closely related pnictogen bonds have been neglected. In this study, we introduce conceptually simple, neutral, and monodentate pnictogen-bonding catalysts. Solution and in?silico binding studies, together with high catalytic activity in chloride abstraction reactions, yield compelling evidence for operational pnictogen bonds. The depth of the ??holes is easily varied with different substituents. Comparison with homologous halogen- and chalcogen-bonding catalysts shows an increase in activity from main group?VII to V and from row?3 to 5 in the periodic table. Pnictogen bonds from antimony thus emerged as by far the best among the elements covered, a finding that provides most intriguing perspectives for future applications in catalysis and beyond.
