Five new species of Mydaea from China (Diptera, Muscidae).

ABSTRACT: Five new species of Mydaea are described from China, namely M. adhesipeda Xue, sp. nov., M. combiniseriata Xue, sp. nov., M. qingyuanensis Xue, sp. nov., M. quinquiseta Xue, sp. nov., M. wusuensis Xue, sp. nov., and an addendum to the key of the Mydaea in China is given.

Five new species of Minettia (Minettiella) (Diptera, Lauxaniidae) from China.

Project description:Five species of Minettia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 from the South of China are described as new to science: Minettia (Minettiella) bawanglingensissp. n., Minettia (Minettiella) clavatasp. n., Minettia (Minettiella) plurifurcatasp. n., Minettia (Minettiella) spinosasp. n. and Minettia (Minettiella) tianmushanensissp. n. Minettiellaelbergi Shatalkin, 1996 and Minettiajaponica Sasakawa, 1995 are treated as junior synonyms of Minettia (Minettiella) dolabriforma (Sasakawa & Kozánek, 1995). A key to five subgenera of Minettia and eleven species of Minettia (Minettiella) is presented.

A new genus and species of Coenosiini from Costa Rica (Diptera, Muscidae, Coenosiinae).

Project description:Palpilongus gen. n. is herein described for one species - Palpilongus bifurcus sp. n., from Costa Rica, based on male and females. The striking morphological characters of the species - palpus very long, about as long as prementum; upper calypter truncate and very short and setae of male sternite 5 bifurcated, confirm that this new species is also a new genus in the tribe Coenosiini. Male and female terminalia were dissected and illustrated.

New records of Muscidae (Diptera) from Mediterranean countries.

Project description:New records are provided for Muscidae from four different Mediterranean countries, with new distribution records for species in ten different genera. Seven species are newly recorded for Croatia, four species for Montenegro and one species for Bosnia & Herzegovina. In this paper we give the first confirmation of an aquatic larval stage for Lispocephalabrachialis (Rondani, 1877), Lispocephalaspuria (Zetterstedt, 1838) and Lispocephalamikii (Strobl, 1893). A first record of the species Coenosialyneborgi Pont, 1972 since its original description is also provided.

Project description:Five species of the subgenus Plesiominettia Shatalkin from the southern China are described as new to science: Minettia (Plesiominettia) flavoscutellata sp. n., Minettia (Plesiominettia) longaciculiformis sp. n., Minettia (Plesiominettia) nigrantennata sp. n., Minettia (Plesiominettia) tridentata sp. n. and Minettia (Plesiominettia) zhejiangica sp. n. One species, Minettia longistylis Sasakawa, is transferred to the subgenus Plesiominettia from Minettia s. str. A key to separate the known species of the subgenus is presented, along with a taxonomic list of species. The type materials of the new species are deposited in the China Agricultural University, Beijing, China (CAUC).

Two new species of Oxycera (Diptera, Stratiomyidae) from Ningxia, China.

Project description:Two new speices, Oxycera rozkosnyisp. n. and Oxycera ningxiaensissp. n., are described from Liupanshan Nature Reserve, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Northwest China. All essential diagnostic characters are figured and possible relationships of both taxa are briefly discussed, and a new key to species of Oxycera from China. The type specimens are deposited in the Institute of Entomology, Guizhou University, Guiyang (GUGC).

Five new species of Drosophilaguarani group from the Andes of southern Ecuador (Diptera, Drosophilidae).

Project description:Five species of the genus Drosophila are described and illustrated: D.zamorana sp. n., D.quinarensis sp. n., D.sachapuyu sp. n., D.caxarumi sp. n., and D.misi sp. n. from the cloud forests of the Podocarpus National Park, in the southern Ecuadorian Andes. Flies were captured using plastic bottles containing pieces of fermented banana with yeast. All the species were found to belong to the Drosophilaguarani species-group.

Antennal and palpal sensilla of three predatory Lispe species (Diptera: Muscidae): an ultrastructural investigation.

Project description:Antennae and maxillary palps are the most important chemical reception organs of flies. So far, the morphology of antennae and maxillary palps of flies of most feeding habits have been well described, except for that of relatively rare aquatic predatory species. This study describes sensilla on antennae and maxillary palps of three aquatic predatory Lispe species: Lispe longicollis, L. orientalis and L. pygmaea. Types, distribution, and density of sensilla are characterised via light and scanning electron microscopy. One type of mechanoreceptors is found on antennal scape. Mechanoreceptors (two subtypes) and one single pedicellar button (in L. pygmaea) are located on antennal pedicel. Four types of sensilla are discovered on antennal postpedicel: trichoid sensilla, basiconic sensilla (three subtypes), coeloconic sensilla and clavate sensilla. A unique character of these Lispe species is that the coeloconic sensilla are distributed sparsely on antennal postpedicel. Mechanoreceptors and basiconic sensilla are observed on the surface of maxillary palps in all three species. We demonstrated clear sexual dimorphism of the maxillary palps in some of the Lispe species, unlike most other Muscidae species, are larger in males than females. This, along with their courtship dance behaviour, suggest their function as both chemical signal receiver and visual signal conveyer, which is among the few records of a chemical reception organ act as a signal conveyer in insects.

Project description:The Chinese species of Parametriocnemus Goetghebuer are reviewed. Two species, Parametriocnemus fortis sp. n. and Parametriocnemus vittatus sp. n. are described and illustrated as males, and Parametriocnemus ornaticornis (Kieffer), Parametriocnemus scotti (Freeman) and Parametriocnemus brundini Sinharay & Chaudhuri are recorded from China for the first time. A key to the males of the seven Chinese Parametriocnemus speciesis given.
