Computer-Assisted Design of Environmentally Friendly and Light-Stable Fluorescent Dyes for Textile Applications.

ABSTRACT: Five potentially environmentally friendly and light-stable hemicyanine dyes were designed based on integrated consideration of photo, environmental, and computational chemistry as well as textile applications. Two of them were synthesized and applied in dyeing polyacrylonitrile (PAN), cotton, and nylon fabrics, and demonstrated the desired properties speculated by the programs. The computer-assisted analytical processes includes estimation of the maximum absorption and emission wavelengths, aquatic environmental toxicity, affinity to fibers, and photo-stability. This procedure could effectively narrow down discovery of new potential dye structures, greatly reduce and prevent complex and expensive preparation processes, and significantly improve the development efficiency of novel environmentally friendly dyes.

Investigating fluorescent dyes in fluorescence-assisted screenings.

Project description:Screening of bead-based peptide libraries against fluorescent dye-labeled target proteins was found to be significantly influenced by the dye characteristics. Commercially available red fluorescent dyes with net negative charges adversely showed strong interactions with library beads. The introduction of zwitterionic dyes significantly reduced the unwanted interactions, which sheds light upon using the right fluorescent probe for acquisition of reliable results in various fluorescence-assisted applications.

Recycling Waste Circuit Board Efficiently and Environmentally Friendly through Small-Molecule Assisted Dissolution.

Project description:With the increasing amount of electronic waste (e-waste) generated globally, it is an enormous challenge to recycle printed circuit boards (PCBs) efficiently and environmentally friendly. However, conventional recycling technologies have low efficiency and require tough treatment such as high temperature (>200?°C) and high pressure. In this paper, a small-molecule assisted approach based on dynamic reaction was proposed to dissolve thermosetting polymers containing ester groups and recycle electronic components from PCBs. This effective approach operates below 200?°C and the polymer could be dissolved in a short time. It has a remarkable ability to recycle a wide range of commercial PCBs, including boards made of typical anhydride epoxy or polyester substrate. Besides, it is environmentally friendly as even the recycling solution could be reused multiple times. In addition, the wasted solution after recycling could be used for board bonding and damage repair. This work also demonstrates the advantage of using polymers containing ester groups as the PCB substrate in consideration of eco-friendly and efficient recycling.

Photophysical Study and Biological Applications of Synthetic Chalcone-Based Fluorescent Dyes.

Project description:A chalcone series (3a-f) with electron push-pull effect was synthesized via a one-pot Claisen-Schmidt reaction with a simple purification step. The compounds exhibited strong emission, peaking around 512-567 nm with mega-stokes shift (∆λ = 93-139 nm) in polar solvents (DMSO, MeOH, and PBS) and showed good photo-stability. Therefore, 3a-f were applied in cellular imaging. After 3 h of incubation, green fluorescence was clearly brighter in cancer cells (HepG2) compared to normal cells (HEK-293), suggesting preferential accumulation in cancer cells. Moreover, all compounds exhibited higher cytotoxicity within 24 h toward cancer cells (IC50 values ranging from 45 to 100 μM) than normal cells (IC50 value >100 μM). Furthermore, the antimicrobial properties of chalcones 3a-f were investigated. Interestingly, 3a-f exhibited antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of 0.10-0.60 mg/mL (375-1000 µM), suggesting their potential antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Thus, this series of chalcone-derived fluorescent dyes with facile synthesis shows great potential for the development of antibiotics and cancer cell staining agents.

Atmospheric Aerosol Assisted Pulsed Plasma Polymerization: An Environmentally Friendly Technique for Tunable Catechol-Bearing Thin Films.

Project description:In this work, an atmospheric aerosol assisted pulsed plasma process is reported as an environmentally friendly technique for the preparation of tunable catechol-bearing thin films under solvent and catalyst free conditions. The approach relies on the direct injection of dopamine acrylamide dissolved in 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate as comonomer into the plasma zone. By adjusting the pulsing of the electrical discharge, the reactive plasma process can be alternatively switch ON (tON) and OFF (tOFF) during different periods of time, thus allowing a facile and fine tuning of the catechol density, morphology and deposition rate of the coating. An optimal tON/tOFF ratio is established, that permits maximizing the catechol content in the deposited film. Finally, a diagram, based on the average energy input into the process, is proposed allowing for easy custom synthesis of layers with specific chemical and physical properties, thus highlighting the utility of the developed dry plasma route.

Direct analysis of textile fabrics and dyes using infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Project description:The forensic analysis of textile fibers uses a variety of techniques from microscopy to spectroscopy. One such technique that is often used to identify the dye(s) within the fiber is mass spectrometry (MS). In the traditional MS method, the dye must be extracted from the fabric and the dye components are separated by chromatography prior to mass spectrometric analysis. Direct analysis of the dye from the fabric allows the omission of the lengthy sample preparation involved in extraction, thereby significantly reducing the overall analysis time. Herein, a direct analysis of dyed textile fabric was performed using the infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption electrospray ionization (IR-MALDESI) source for MS. In MALDESI, an IR laser with wavelength tuned to 2.94 μm is used to desorb the dye from the fabric sample with the aid of water as the matrix. The desorbed dye molecules are then postionized by electrospray ionization (ESI). A variety of dye classes were analyzed from various fabrics with little to no sample preparation allowing for the identification of the dye mass and in some cases the fiber polymer. Those dyes that were not detected using MALDESI were also not observed by direct infusion ESI of the dye standard.

Ionic Liquid-Supported Photocatalysts: A Reusable Environmentally Friendly Oxidation Reaction System That Uses Air and Light

Project description:Ionic liquids are used in various fields due to their unique physical properties and are widely utilized as reaction solvents in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. We have previously proposed a new organic synthetic method in which the catalyst and reaction reagents are supported on ionic liquids. This method has various advantages, such as the ability to reuse the reaction solvent and catalyst and its facile post-reaction treatment. In this paper, we describe the synthesis of an ionic liquid-supported anthraquinone photocatalyst and the synthesis of benzoic acid derivatives using this system. This synthesis of benzoic acid derivatives via the cleavage of vicinal diols by an ionic liquid-supported anthraquinone photocatalyst is an environmentally friendly process, and furthermore, it has a simple post-reaction process, and the catalyst and solvent can both be reused. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the synthesis of benzoic-acid derivatives via the cleavage of vicinal diols using light and an ionic-liquid-supported catalyst.

Environmentally Friendly Fertilizers Based on Starch Superabsorbents.

Project description:Superabsorbents starches (SASs) were synthesized and characterized starting from native corn starch, bitter cassava and sweet cassava by graft copolymerization with itaconic acid. Additionally, their swelling behavior was studied both in water and in buffer solutions with different pHs and saline solutions. Their applicability was tested as environmentally friendly fertilizers in the absorption and release of urea, potassium nitrate and ammonium nitrate at different concentrations of fertilizers. The values of swelling at the equilibrium (H∞) in water and different media of the graft copolymers demonstrated their superabsorbent capacity, polyelectrolyte behavior, and smart response to environmental stimuli. The percentage of fertilizer absorbed and released from the SASs was a function of the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium. The loading and release of SASs were depended on the initial concentration of the fertilizer in the medium as well as the nature, structure, and morphology of the starch used.

Evaluation of three different fluorescent dyes for cDNA labeling in microarrays

Project description:The simultaneous measurement of gene expression for thousands of genes in a single analysis by the microarray technology allows researchers to describe transcriptomes in various samples of interest. Problems with variation in data quality derived from microarray experiments are well known and might result from poor RNA quality, background problems, or sub optimal signal strength. To assess variation due to the fluorescent dye chosen, three different dye pairs were tested for labelling of cDNA in gene expression analysis experiments on a porcine immune focused oligonucleotide microarray (POM3). This in-house oligonucleotide microarray allowed a direct comparison of background fluorescence, Median signal intensities, numbers of spots detected, and resistance to photobleaching between different dye pairs. Two Chemically Stable Cd(II) Polymers as Fluorescent Sensor and Photocatalyst for Aromatic Dyes.

Project description:Two new 2D Cd(II)-based coordination polymers (CPs), viz. [Cd₂(H₂L)₂(2,2'-bipy)₂] (1) and [Cd(L)0.5(phen)·0.5H₂O] (2), have been constructed using ethylene glycol ether bridging tetracarboxylate ligand 5,5'(4,4'-phenylenebis(methyleneoxy)) diisophthalic acid (H₄L). Both CPs behaved as profound fluorescent sensor for Fe3+ ion and nitro-aromatics (NACs), specifically 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). The stability at elevated temperature and photocatalytic behaviors of both 1 and 2 for photo-decomposition of aromatic dyes have also been explored. An attempt has been made to explore the plausible mechanism related with the decrease in fluorescence intensity of 1 and 2 in presence of NACs using theoretical calculations. Additionally, the probable mechanism of photo catalysis by 1 and 2 to photo-degrade aromatic dyes has been explained using density of states (DOS) calculations.

N-Substituted Phenothiazines as Environmentally Friendly Hole-Transporting Materials for Low-Cost and Highly Stable Halide Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Most of the high-performing halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) leverage toxic chlorinated solvents (e.g., o-dichlorobenzene or chlorobenzene) for the hole-transporting material (HTM) processing and/or antisolvents in the perovskite film fabrication. To minimize the environmental and health-related hazards, it is highly desirable, yet at the same time demanding, to develop HTMs and perovskite deposition processes relying on nonhalogenated solvents. In this work, we designed two small molecules, AZO-III and AZO-IV, and synthesized them via simple and environmentally friendly Schiff base chemistry, by condensation of electron-donating triarylamine and phenothiazine moieties connected through an azomethine bridge. The molecules are implemented as HTMs in PSCs upon processing in a nonchlorinated (toluene) solvent, rendering their synthesis and film preparation eco-friendly. The enhancement in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) was achieved when switching from AZO-III (9.77%) to AZO-IV (11.62%), in which the thioethyl group is introduced in the 2-position of the phenothiazine ring. Additionally, unencapsulated PSCs based on AZO-III displayed excellent stabilities (75% of the initial PCEs is retained after 6 months of air exposure for AZO-III to be compared with a 48% decrease of the initial PCE for Spiro-OMeTAD-based devices). The outstanding stability and the extremely low production cost (AZO-III = 9.23 $/g and AZO-IV = 9.03 $/g), together with the environmentally friendly synthesis, purification, and processing, make these materials attractive candidates as HTMs for cost-effective, stable, and eco-friendly PSCs.
