Formulation of experimental data based model for solid-liquid mass transfer enhancement in three phase fluidized bed using nanofluid.

ABSTRACT: This experimental data based model in three phase fluidized bed was designed to enhance the solid-liquid mass transfer. This data focuses on mass transfer enhancement using nanomaterial. In present investigation benzoic acid-water-air system was used as three phases ie solid, liquid and gas respectively with Arachitol nano as nanomaterial in different volume percent in three phase fluidized bed. Data from experiment were collected by varying gas velocity, bed height, nanomaterial percentage and time. After a convenient selection various correlation have been derived. The data presented here is the full set of experimental value and coefficients and exponents in correlation were estimated from nonlinear optimization technique in MATLAB.

Study of Liquid-Solid Mass Transfer and Hydrodynamics in Micropacked Bed with Gas-Liquid Flow.

Project description:The volumetric liquid-solid (L-S) mass transfer coefficient under gas-liquid (G-L) two-phase flow in a silicon-chip-based micropacked bed reactor (MPBR) was studied using the copper dissolution method and was related to the reactor hydrodynamic behavior. Using a high-speed camera and a robust computational image analysis method that selectively analyzed the bed voidage around the copper particles, the observed hydrodynamics were directly related to the L-S mass transfer rates in the MPBR. This hydrodynamic study revealed different pulsing structures inside the packed copper bed depending on the flow patterns established preceding the packed bed upon increasing gas velocity. A "liquid-dominated slug" flow regime was associated with an upstream slug flow feed. A "sparse slug" flow regime developed with an upstream slug-annular flow feed. At higher gas velocity, a "gas continuous with pulsing" regime developed with an annular flow feed, which had similar features to the pulsing flow in macroscale packed beds, but it was sensitive and easily destabilized by disturbances from upstream or downstream pressure fluctuations. The volumetric L-S mass transfer coefficient decreased with increasing gas velocity under the liquid-dominated slug flow regime and became rather less affected under the sparse slug flow regime. By resolving the transition from the liquid-dominated slug flow to the sparse slug flow and capturing the onset of the gas-continuous with pulsing regime, we gained new insights into the hydrodynamic effects of G-L flows on the L-S mass transfer rates in a MPBR.

Integrated Purification and Formulation of an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient via Agitated Bed Crystallization and Fluidized Bed Processing.

Project description:Integrated API and drug product processing enable molecules with high clinical efficacy but poor physicochemical characteristics to be commercialized by direct co-processing with excipients to produce advanced multicomponent intermediates. Furthermore, developing isolation-free frameworks would enable end-to-end continuous processing of drugs. The aim of this work was to purify a model API (sodium ibuprofen) and impurity (ibuprofen ethyl ester) system and then directly process it into a solid-state formulation without isolating a solid API phase. Confined agitated bed crystallization is proposed to purify a liquid stream of impure API from 4% to 0.2% w/w impurity content through periodic or parallelized operations. This stream is combined with a polymer solution in an intermediary tank, enabling the API to be spray coated directly onto microcrystalline cellulose beads. The spray coating process was developed using a Design of Experiments approach, allowing control over the drug loading efficiency and the crystallinity of the API on the beads by altering the process parameters. The DoE study indicated that the solvent volume was the dominant factor controlling the drug loading efficiency, while a combination of factors influenced the crystallinity. The products from the fluidized bed are ideal for processing into final drug products and can subsequently be coated to control drug release.

Exploring bubble oscillation and mass transfer enhancement in acoustic-assisted liquid-liquid extraction with a microfluidic device.

Project description:We investigated bubble oscillation and its induced enhancement of mass transfer in a liquid-liquid extraction process with an acoustically-driven, bubble-based microfluidic device. The oscillation of individually trapped bubbles, of known sizes, in microchannels was studied at both a fixed frequency, and over a range of frequencies. Resonant frequencies were analytically identified and were found to be in agreement with the experimental observations. The acoustic streaming induced by the bubble oscillation was identified as the cause of this enhanced extraction. Experiments extracting Rhodanmine B from an aqueous phase (DI water) to an organic phase (1-octanol) were performed to determine the relationship between extraction efficiency and applied acoustic power. The enhanced efficiency in mass transport via these acoustic-energy-assisted processes was confirmed by comparisons against a pure diffusion-based process.

Calcination of Clay Raw Materials in a Fluidized Bed.

Project description:Clay raw materials are diverse in terms of their mineral composition, as well as the content of colouring oxides and their physical properties. Determining the suitability of raw materials for various purposes requires comprehensive studies on their properties, as well as their appropriate correction, which is possible through the use of appropriate modification techniques. One of the most commonly used technologies for the enrichment of clay raw materials is to subject them to high temperatures, which, depending on the temperature regime used in the technological process, may cause the decomposition and removal of some addditional components (e.g., carbonates), as well as the removal of water and dehydroxylation of clay minerals, reversible structural changes, and the complete and permanent reconstruction of the mineral phases. This paper presents a new application for fluidization technology in the calcination of clay raw materials. The results of the experiment show that the fluidization method is competitive compared to the technologies that have been used so far, as a result of, inter alia, the much shorter time period required to carry out the calcination process and, consequently, the much lower energy expenditure, the high efficiency of burning coal, and the lower CO2 emissions resulting from the mixing taking place in the reactor.

Life Cycle Assessment of Advanced Circulating Fluidized Bed Municipal Solid Waste Incineration System from an Environmental and Exergetic Perspective.

Project description:The production of clean and efficient energy from municipal solid waste (MSW) is extremely urgent matter due to an increasing energy demand and environmental concerns. In this study, a high steam parameter (520 °C, 7.9 MPa) circulating fluidized bed (CFB) MSW incineration system, equipped with a mechanical, biological treatment and external heat exchanger systems, was introduced and a comparative study with a typical mechanical grate (450 °C, 5.3 MPa) incineration system and conventional CFB (485 °C, 5.3 MPa) incineration system was carried out from a life-cycle, environmental and exergetic perspective which could assess different energy and material outputs based on real operating data. Moreover, the potential system optimization of this advanced CFB system was proposed. The results showed that the advanced CFB system was more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient than conventional MSW incineration systems. The recovery of material should be given priority over energy recovery. According to the assessment of the environment, and energy and material recovery, a process improvement with an incinerated refuse-derived fuel and a semi-compost produced by MBT as a soil conditioner was highly recommended.

Polypropylene Production Optimization in Fluidized Bed Catalytic Reactor (FBCR): Statistical Modeling and Pilot Scale Experimental Validation.

Project description:Propylene is one type of plastic that is widely used in our everyday life. This study focuses on the identification and justification of the optimum process parameters for polypropylene production in a novel pilot plant based fluidized bed reactor. This first-of-its-kind statistical modeling with experimental validation for the process parameters of polypropylene production was conducted by applying ANNOVA (Analysis of variance) method to Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Three important process variables i.e., reaction temperature, system pressure and hydrogen percentage were considered as the important input factors for the polypropylene production in the analysis performed. In order to examine the effect of process parameters and their interactions, the ANOVA method was utilized among a range of other statistical diagnostic tools such as the correlation between actual and predicted values, the residuals and predicted response, outlier t plot, 3D response surface and contour analysis plots. The statistical analysis showed that the proposed quadratic model had a good fit with the experimental results. At optimum conditions with temperature of 75 °C, system pressure of 25 bar and hydrogen percentage of 2%, the highest polypropylene production obtained is 5.82% per pass. Hence it is concluded that the developed experimental design and proposed model can be successfully employed with over a 95% confidence level for optimum polypropylene production in a fluidized bed catalytic reactor (FBCR).

Mass transfer enhancement in moving biofilm structures.

Project description:Biofilms are layers of microbial cells growing on an interface and they can form highly complex structures adapted to a wide variety of environmental conditions. Biofilm streamers have a small immobile base attached to the support and a flexible tail elongated in the flow direction, which can vibrate in fast flows. Herein we report numerical results for the role of the periodical movement of biofilm streamers on the nutrient uptake and in general on the solute mass transfer enhancement due to flow-induced oscillations. We developed what to our knowledge is a novel two-dimensional fluid-structure interaction model coupled to unsteady solute mass transport and solved the model using the finite element method with a moving mesh. Results demonstrate that the oscillatory movement of the biofilm tail significantly increases the substrate uptake. The mass transfer coefficient is the highest in regions close to the streamer tip. The reason for substrate transfer enhancement is the increase in speed of tip movement relative to the surrounding liquid, thereby reducing the thickness of the mass transfer boundary layer. In addition, we show that the relative mass transfer enhancement in unsteady conditions compared with the rigid static structure is larger at higher flow velocities, and this relative increase favors a more flexible structure.

Computational fluid dynamics derived dataset for evaluation of mixing of a secondary solid phase in a circulating fluidized bed riser.

Project description:Transient Eulerian simulations of multiphase flow inside a laboratory-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser were performed with air, bed material, and a secondary solid phase to evaluate the mixing of the secondary solid phase. This simulation data can be applied in model development or for computing terms that are commonly used when modeling mixing with simplified models (pseudo-steady state, non-convective models, etc.). The data was produced with transient Eulerian modeling using Ansys Fluent 19.2. The simulations were done with one fluidization velocity and bed material, while the density, particle size, and inlet velocity of the secondary solid phase was varied and 10 simulations per each secondary solid phase case were simulated for 1 s, each simulation having different starting conditions (flow state of the air and bed material) inside the riser. These 10 cases were then averaged to provide an average mixing profile for each secondary solid phase. Both the averaged and un-average data are included. The details of the modeling, averaging, geometry, materials, and cases are described in the open-access publication by Nikku et al. (Chem. Eng. Sci. 269, 118503).

Darcy-Forchheimer hybrid nanofluid flow over a stretching curved surface with heat and mass transfer.

Project description:The present article provides a detailed analysis of the Darcy Forchheimer flow of hybrid nanoliquid past an exponentially extending curved surface. In the porous space, the viscous fluid is expressed by Darcy-Forchheimer. The cylindrical shaped carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs) and Fe3O4 (iron oxide) are used to synthesize hybrid nanofluid. At first, the appropriate similarity transformation is used to convert the modeled nonlinear coupled partial differential equations into nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations. Then the resulting highly nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations are analytically solved by the utilization of the "Homotopy analysis method" (HAM) method. The influence of sundry flow factors on velocity, temperature, and concentration profile are sketched and briefly discussed. The enhancement in both volume fraction parameter and curvature parameter k results in raises of the velocity profile. The uses of both Fe3O4 and CNTs nanoparticles are expressively improving the thermophysical properties of the base fluid. Apart from this, the numerical values of some physical quantities such as skin friction coefficients, local Nusselt number, and Sherwood number for the variation of the values of pertinent parameters are displayed in tabular forms. The obtained results show that the hybrid nanofluid enhances the heat transfer rate 2.21%, 2.1%, and 2.3% using the MWCNTs, SWCNTs, and Fe3O4 nanomaterials.
