Electrochemical properties of tungsten sulfide-carbon composite microspheres prepared by spray pyrolysis.

Project description:Tungsten sulfide (WS2)-carbon composite powders with superior electrochemical properties are prepared by a two-step process. WO3-carbon composite powders were first prepared by conventional spray pyrolysis, and they were then sulfidated to form WS2-carbon powders. Bare WS2 powders are also prepared by sulfidation of bare WO3 powders obtained by spray pyrolysis. Stacked graphitic layers could not be found in the bare WS2 and WS2-carbon composite powders. The amorphous bare WS2 and WS2-carbon composite powders have Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas of 2.8 and 4 m(2) g(-1), respectively. The initial discharge and charge capacities of the WS2-carbon composite powders at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) are 1055 and 714 mA h g(-1), respectively, and the corresponding initial Coulombic efficiency is 68%. On the other hand, the initial discharge and charge capacities of the bare WS2 powders are 514 and 346 mA h g(-1), respectively. The discharge capacities of the WS2-carbon composite powders for the 2(nd) and 50(th) cycles are 716 and 555 mA h g(-1), respectively, and the corresponding capacity retention measured after first cycle is 78%.

Microalgae-Templated Spray Drying for Hierarchical and Porous Fe3O4/C Composite Microspheres as Li-ion Battery Anode Materials.

Project description:A method of microalgae-templated spray drying to develop hierarchical porous Fe3O4/C composite microspheres as anode materials for Li-ion batteries was developed. During the spray-drying process, individual microalgae serve as building blocks of raspberry-like hollow microspheres via self-assembly. In the present study, microalgae-derived carbon matrices, naturally doped heteroatoms, and hierarchical porous structural features synergistically contributed to the high electrochemical performance of the Fe3O4/C composite microspheres, enabling a discharge capacity of 1375 mA·h·g-1 after 700 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g. Notably, the microalgal frameworks of the Fe3O4/C composite microspheres were maintained over the course of charge/discharge cycling, thus demonstrating the structural stability of the composite microspheres against pulverization. In contrast, the sample fabricated without microalgal templating showed significant capacity drops (up to ~40% of initial capacity) during the early cycles. Clearly, templating of microalgae endows anode materials with superior cycling stability.

Preparation and properties of chitosan-based microspheres by spray drying.

Project description:In this study, the chitosan-based release microspheres were prepared by spray drying method. Chitosan was used as the carrier material, and Panax notoginseng extract, Codonopsis extract, and Atractylodes extract (the mass ratio was 2:7:5) were active substance. The spray drying preparation process of microsphere was optimized by single factor experiment and L9 (34) orthogonal design. Drug loading (DL), particle size, and sustained release performance of microspheres were investigated. The mass fraction of chitosan was 1.5%, the mass ratio of drug to chitosan was 1:3, the inlet air temperature was 130°C, and the injection rate was 400 ml/hr. The chitosan-based microspheres prepared under the above conditions had a smooth surface, and the DL was 23.87 ± 0.93%; the average particle diameter was 10.27 ± 1.05 ?m, and the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of the microspheres was 91.28 ± 1.04%. The preparation process of chitosan-based drug microsphere prepared by spray drying method was simple and stable. The prepared microspheres in this paper showed a sustained release effect in vitro.

Theophylline cocrystals prepared by spray drying: physicochemical properties and aerosolization performance.

Project description:The purpose of this work was to characterize theophylline (THF) cocrystals prepared by spray drying in terms of the physicochemical properties and inhalation performance when aerosolized from a dry powder inhaler. Cocrystals of theophylline with urea (THF-URE), saccharin (THF-SAC) and nicotinamide (THF-NIC) were prepared by spray drying. Milled THF and THF-SAC cocrystals were also used for comparison. The physical purity, particle size, particle morphology and surface energy of the materials were determined. The in vitro aerosol performance of the spray-dried cocrystals, drug-alone and a drug-carrier aerosol, was assessed. The spray-dried particles had different size distributions, morphologies and surface energies. The milled samples had higher surface energy than those prepared by spray drying. Good agreement was observed between multi-stage liquid impinger and next-generation impactor in terms of assessing spray-dried THF particles. The fine particle fractions of both formulations were similar for THF, but drug-alone formulations outperformed drug-carrier formulations for the THF cocrystals. The aerosolization performance of different THF cocrystals was within the following rank order as obtained from both drug-alone and drug-carrier formulations: THF-NIC>THF-URE>THF-SAC. It was proposed that micromeritic properties dominate over particle surface energy in terms of determining the aerosol performance of THF cocrystals. Spray drying could be a potential technique for preparing cocrystals with modified physical properties.

Compression of amorphous solid dispersions prepared by hot-melt extrusion, spray drying and vacuum drum drying.

Project description:The present study explored vacuum drum drying (VDD) as an alternative technology for amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) manufacture compared to hot-melt extrusion (HME) and spray drying (SD) focusing on downstream processability (powder properties, compression behavior and tablet performance). Ritonavir (15% w/w) in a copovidone/sorbitan monolaurate matrix was used as ASD model system. The pure ASDs and respective tablet blends (TB) (addition of filler, glidant, lubricant) were investigated. Milled extrudate showed superior powder properties (e.g., flowability, bulk density) compared to VDD and SD, which could be compensated by the addition of 12.9% outer phase. Advantageously, the VDD intermediate was directly compressible, whereas the SD material was not, resulting in tablets with defects based on a high degree of elastic recovery. Compared to HME, the VDD material showed superior tabletability when formulated as TB, resulting in stronger compacts at even lower solid fraction values. Despite the differences in tablet processing, tablets showed similar tablet performance in terms of disintegration and dissolution independent of the ASD origin. In conclusion, VDD is a valid alternative to manufacture ASDs. VDD offered advantageous downstream processability compared to SD: less solvents and process steps required (no second drying), improved powder properties and suitable for direct compression.

Morphology of Composite Fe@Au Submicron Particles, Produced with Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis and Potential for Synthesis of Fe@Au Core-Shell Particles.

Project description:Iron core-gold shell (Fe@Au) nanoparticles are prominent for their magnetic and optical properties, which are especially beneficial for biomedical uses. Some experiments were carried out to produce Fe@Au particles with a one-step synthesis method, Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis (USP), which is able to produce the particles in a continuous process. The Fe@Au particles were produced with USP from a precursor solution with dissolved Iron (III) chloride and Gold (III) chloride, with Fe/Au concentration ratios ranging from 0.1 to 4. The resulting products are larger Fe oxide particles (mostly maghemite Fe2O3), with mean sizes of about 260-390 nm, decorated with Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with mean sizes of around 24-67 nm. The Fe oxide core particles are mostly spherical in all of the experiments, while the AuNPs become increasingly irregular and more heavily agglomerated with lower Fe/Au concentration ratios in the precursor solution. The resulting particle morphology from these experiments is caused by surface chemistry and particle to solvent interactions during particle formation inside the USP system.

Large Scale Process for Low Crystalline MoO?-Carbon Composite Microspheres Prepared by One-Step Spray Pyrolysis for Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:This paper introduces a large-scale and facile method for synthesizing low crystalline MoO?/carbon composite microspheres, in which MoO? nanocrystals are distributed homogeneously in the amorphous carbon matrix, directly by a one-step spray pyrolysis. The MoO?/carbon composite microspheres with mean diameters of 0.7 µm were directly formed from one droplet by a series of drying, decomposition, and crystalizing inside the hot-wall reactor within six seconds. The MoO?/carbon composite microspheres had high specific discharge capacities of 811 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles, even at a high current density of 1.0 A g-1 when applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The MoO?/carbon composite microspheres had final discharge capacities of 999, 875, 716, and 467 mA h g-1 at current densities of 0.5, 1.5, 3.0, and 5.0 A g-1, respectively. MoO?/carbon composite microspheres provide better Li-ion storage than do bare MoO? powders because of their high structural stability and electrical conductivity.

Nitrogen-Doped Mesoporous Carbon Microspheres by Spray Drying-Vapor Deposition for High-Performance Supercapacitor.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon microspheres have been successfully synthesized via a spray drying-vapor deposition method for the first time, using commercial Ludox silica nanoparticles as hard templates. Compared to freeze-drying and air-drying methods, mesoporous carbon with a higher packing density can be achieved through the spray drying method. Vapor deposition of polypyrrole followed by carbonization and etching is beneficial for the generation of ultra-thin carbon network. The mesoporous carbon microspheres possess a mesopore-dominate (95%) high surface area of 1528 m2 g-1, a wall thickness of 1.8 nm, and a nitrogen content of 8 at% in the framework. Benefiting from the increased apparent density, high mesopore surface area, and considerable nitrogen doping, the resultant mesoporous carbon microspheres show superior gravimetric/volumetric capacitance of 533.6 F g-1 and 208.1 F cm-3, good rate performance and excellent cycling stability in electric double-layer capacitors.

Enhanced Oral Bioavailability of Resveratrol by Using Neutralized Eudragit E Solid Dispersion Prepared via Spray Drying.

Project description:In this study, we designed amorphous solid dispersions based on Eudragit E/HCl (neutralized Eudragit E using hydrochloric acid) to maximize the dissolution of trans-resveratrol. Solid-state characterization of amorphous solid dispersions of trans-resveratrol was performed using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and particle size measurements. In addition, an in vitro dissolution study and an in vivo pharmacokinetic study in rats were carried out. Among the tested polymers, Eudragit E/HCl was the most effective solid dispersion for the solubilization of trans-resveratrol. Eudragit E/HCl significantly inhibited the precipitation of trans-resveratrol in a pH 1.2 dissolution medium in a dose-dependent manner. The amorphous Eudragit E/HCl solid dispersion at a trans-resveratrol/polymer ratio of 10/90 exhibited a high degree of supersaturation without trans-resveratrol precipitation for at least 48 h by the formation of Eudragit E/HCl micelles. In rats, the absolute oral bioavailability (F%) of trans-resveratrol from Eudragit E/HCl solid dispersion (10/90) was estimated to be 40%. Therefore, trans-resveratrol-loaded Eudragit E/HCl solid dispersions prepared by spray drying offer a promising formulation strategy with high oral bioavailability for developing high-quality health supplements, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical products.
