The cellular consequences of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate receptor (NMDAR) stimulation depend on the receptors' subcellular localization. Synaptic NMDARs promote plasticity and survival whereas extrasynaptic NMDARs mediate excitotoxicity and contribute to cell death in neurodegenerative diseases.
