Quantifying electron-transfer in liquid-solid contact electrification and the formation of electric double-layer.

ABSTRACT: Contact electrification (CE) has been known for more than 2600 years but the nature of charge carriers and their transfer mechanisms still remain poorly understood, especially for the cases of liquid-solid CE. Here, we study the CE between liquids and solids and investigate the decay of CE charges on the solid surfaces after liquid-solid CE at different thermal conditions. The contribution of electron transfer is distinguished from that of ion transfer on the charged surfaces by using the theory of electron thermionic emission. Our study shows that there are both electron transfer and ion transfer in the liquid-solid CE. We reveal that solutes in the solution, pH value of the solution and the hydrophilicity of the solid affect the ratio of electron transfers to ion transfers. Further, we propose a two-step model of electron or/and ion transfer and demonstrate the formation of electric double-layer in liquid-solid CE.

Spin-selected electron transfer in liquid-solid contact electrification.

Project description:Electron transfer has been proven the dominant charge carrier during contact electrification at the liquid-solid interface. However, the effect of electron spin in contact electrification remains to be investigated. This study examines the charge transfer between different liquids and ferrimagnetic solids in a magnetic field, focusing on the contribution of O2 molecules to the liquid-solid contact electrification. The findings reveal that magnetic fields promote electron transfer at the O2-containing liquid-solid interfaces. Moreover, magnetic field-induced electron transfer increases at higher O2 concentrations in the liquids and decreases at elevated temperatures. The results indicate spin-selected electron transfer at liquid-solid interface. External magnetic fields can modulate the spin conversion of the radical pairs at the O2-containing liquid and ferrimagnetic solid interfaces due to the Zeeman interaction, promoting electron transfer. A spin-selected electron transfer model for liquid-solid contact electrification is further proposed based on the radical pair mechanism, in which the HO2 molecules and the free unpaired electrons from the ferrimagnetic solids are considered radical pairs. The spin conversion of the [HO2• •e-] pairs is affected by magnetic fields, rendering the electron transfer magnetic field-sensitive.

Contact electrification through interfacial charge transfer: a mechanistic viewpoint on solid-liquid interfaces.

Project description:Contact electrification (triboelectrification) has been a long-standing phenomenon for 2600 years. The scientific understanding of contact electrification (triboelectrification) remains un-unified as the term itself implies complex phenomena involving mechanical contact/sliding of two materials involving many physico-chemical processes. Recent experimental evidence suggests that electron transfer occurs in contact electrification between solids and liquids besides the traditional belief of ion adsorption. Here, we have illustrated the Density Functional Theory (DFT) formalism based on a first-principles theory coupled with temperature-dependent ab initio molecular dynamics to describe the phenomenon of interfacial charge transfer. The model captures charge transfer dynamics upon adsorption of different ions and molecules on AlN (001), GaN (001), and Si (001) surfaces, which reveals the influence of interfacial charge transfer and can predict charge transfer differences between materials. We have depicted the substantial difference in charge transfer between fluids and solids when different ions (ions that contribute to physiological pH variations in aqueous solutions, e.g., HCl for acidic pH, and NaOH for alkaline pH) are adsorbed on the surfaces. Moreover, a clear picture has been provided based on the electron localization function as conclusive evidence of contact electrification, which may shed light on solid-liquid interfaces.

Understanding contact electrification at liquid-solid interfaces from surface electronic structure.

Project description:The charge transfer phenomenon of contact electrification even exists in the liquid-solid interface by a tiny droplet on the solid surface. In this work, we have investigated the contact electrification mechanism at the liquid-solid interface from the electronic structures at the atomic level. The electronic structures display stronger modulations by the outmost shell charge transfer via surface electrostatic charge perturbation than the inter-bonding-orbital charge transfer at the liquid-solid interface, supporting more factors being involved in charge transfer via contact electrification. Meanwhile, we introduce the electrochemical cell model to quantify the charge transfer based on the pinning factor to linearly correlate the charge transfer and the electronic structures. The pinning factor exhibits a more direct visualization of the charge transfer at the liquid-solid interface. This work supplies critical guidance for describing, quantifying, and modulating the contact electrification induced charge transfer systems in triboelectric nanogenerators in future works.

Electron Transfer in Contact Electrification under Different Atmospheres Packaged inside TENG.

Project description:Contact electrification (CE), a common physical phenomenon, is worth discussing. However, there are few reports on the influence of atmosphere on CE, or on the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), based on CE by encapsulating gas inside. Here, we propose physical processes of electron transfer to interpret the impact of the gaseous atmosphere on CE. An atmosphere-filled triboelectric nanogenerator (AF-TENG) encapsulated five different gas-components of air based on the vertical contact separation mode was prepared. The sensitivity (1.02 V·N-1) and the power density (9.63 μW·m-2) of the oxygen-atmosphere-filled AF-TENG were 229.03% and 157.81% higher than these (0.31 V·N-1 and 3.84 μW·m-2) of the nitrogen-atmosphere-filled AF-TENG. As the oxygen atom possesses more atomic energy levels than other atoms, this could act as a "bridge" for more electrons to directly transfer between the two materials. The device package under different atmospheres could not only strengthen understanding of CE and improve the performance of TENG, but also be potentially applicable to prevent and control unnecessary damage caused by static electricity.

Raindrop energy-powered autonomous wireless hyetometer based on liquid-solid contact electrification.

Project description:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can directly harvest energy via solid-liquid interface contact electrification, making them very suitable for harvesting raindrop energy and as active rainfall sensors. This technology is promising for realizing a fully self-powered system for autonomous rainfall monitoring combined with energy harvesting/sensing. Here, we report a raindrop energy-powered autonomous rainfall monitoring and wireless transmission system (R-RMS), in which a raindrop-TENG (R-TENG) array simultaneously serves as a raindrop energy harvester and rainfall sensor. At a rainfall intensity of 71 mm/min, the R-TENG array can generate an average short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, and maximum output power of 15 μA, 1800 V, and 325 μW, respectively. The collected energy can be adjusted to act as a stable 2.5 V direct-current source for the whole system by a power management circuit. Meanwhile, the R-TENG array acts as a rainfall sensor, in which the output signal can be monitored and the measured data are wirelessly transmitted. Under a rainfall intensity of 71 mm/min, the R-RMS can be continuously powered and autonomously transmit rainfall data once every 4 min. This work has paved the way for raindrop energy-powered wireless hyetometers, which have exhibited broad prospects in unattended weather monitoring, field surveys, and the Internet of Things.

Fundamental aspects of electric double layer force-distance measurements at liquid-solid interfaces using atomic force microscopy.

Project description:Atomic force microscopy (AFM) force-distance measurements are used to investigate the layered ion structure of Ionic Liquids (ILs) at the mica surface. The effects of various tip properties on the measured force profiles are examined and reveal that the measured ion position is independent of tip properties, while the tip radius affects the forces required to break through the ion layers as well as the adhesion force. Force data is collected for different ILs and directly compared with interfacial ion density profiles predicted by molecular dynamics. Through this comparison it is concluded that AFM force measurements are sensitive to the position of the ion with the larger volume and mass, suggesting that ion selectivity in force-distance measurements are related to excluded volume effects and not to electrostatic or chemical interactions between ions and AFM tip. The comparison also revealed that at distances greater than 1?nm the system maintains overall electroneutrality between the AFM tip and sample, while at smaller distances other forces (e.g., van der waals interactions) dominate and electroneutrality is no longer maintained.

A Simple Approach to Characterize Gas-Aqueous Liquid Two-phase Flow Configuration Based on Discrete Solid-Liquid Contact Electrification.

Project description:In this study, we first suggest a simple approach to characterize configuration of gas-aqueous liquid two-phase flow based on discrete solid-liquid contact electrification, which is a newly defined concept as a sequential process of solid-liquid contact and successive detachment of the contact liquid from the solid surface. This approach exhibits several advantages such as simple operation, precise measurement, and cost-effectiveness. By using electric potential that is spontaneously generated by discrete solid-liquid contact electrification, the configurations of the gas-aqueous liquid two-phase flow such as size of a gas slug and flow rate are precisely characterized. According to the experimental and numerical analyses on parameters that affect electric potential, gas slugs have been verified to behave similarly to point electric charges when the measuring point of the electric potential is far enough from the gas slug. In addition, the configuration of the gas-aqueous liquid two-phase microfluidic system with multiple gas slugs is also characterized by using the presented approach. For a proof-of-concept demonstration of using the proposed approach in a self-triggered sensor, a gas slug detector with a counter system is developed to show its practicality and applicability.

Electric double-layer capacitance between an ionic liquid and few-layer graphene.

Project description:Ionic-liquid gates have a high carrier density due to their atomically thin electric double layer (EDL) and extremely large geometrical capacitance Cg. However, a high carrier density in graphene has not been achieved even with ionic-liquid gates because the EDL capacitance CEDL between the ionic liquid and graphene involves the series connection of Cg and the quantum capacitance Cq, which is proportional to the density of states. We investigated the variables that determine CEDL at the molecular level by varying the number of graphene layers n and thereby optimising Cq. The CEDL value is governed by Cq at n < 4, and by Cg at n > 4. This transition with n indicates a composite nature for CEDL. Our finding clarifies a universal principle that determines capacitance on a microscopic scale, and provides nanotechnological perspectives on charge accumulation and energy storage using an ultimately thin capacitor.

Interface inter-atomic electron-transition induced photon emission in contact-electrification.

Project description:Contact electrification (CE) (or triboelectrification) is the phenomena where charges are produced through physical contact between two materials. Here we report the atomic featured photon emission spectra during CE between two solid materials. Photon emission provides the evidence that electron transfer takes place at the interface from an atom in one material to another atom in the other material during CE. This process is the contact electrification induced interface photon emission spectroscopy (CEIIPES). It naturally paves a way to a spectroscopy corresponding to the CE at an interface, which might impact our understanding of the interaction between solids, liquids, and gases. The physics presented here could be expanded to Auger electron excitation, x-ray emission, and electron emission in CE for general cases, which remain to be explored. This could lead to a general field that may be termed as contact electrification induced interface spectroscopy (CEIIS).

Quantifying Double-Layer Potentials at Liquid-Gas Interfaces from Vibrational Sum-Frequency Generation.

Project description:Vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is demonstrated as a fast method to quantify variations of the electric double-layer potential ϕ0 at liquid-gas interfaces. For this, mixed solutions of nonionic tetraethyleneglycol-monodecylether (C10E4) and cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) surfactants were investigated using SFG spectroscopy and a thin-film pressure balance (TFPB). Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek analysis of disjoining pressure isotherms obtained with the TFPB technique provides complementary information on ϕ0, which we apply to validate the results from SFG spectroscopy. By using a single ϕ0 value, we can disentangle χ(2) and χ(3) contributions to the O-H stretching modes of interfacial water molecules in the SFG spectra. Having established the latter, we show that unknown double-layer potentials at the liquid-gas interface from solutions with different C16TAB/C10E4 mixing ratios can be obtained from an analysis of SFG spectra and are in excellent agreement with the complementary results from the TFPB technique.
