Cl<sup>-</sup> is the major extracellular (Cl<sup>-</sup><sub>out</sub>) and intracellular (Cl<sup>-</sup><sub>in</sub>) anion whose concentration is actively regulated by multiple transporters. These transporters generate Cl<sup>-</sup> gradients across the plasma membrane and between the cytoplasm and intracellular organelles.
