A multilayer and spatial description of the Erasmus mobility network.

ABSTRACT: The Erasmus Programme is the biggest collaboration network consisting of European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The flows of students, teachers and staff form directed and weighted networks that connect institutions, regions and countries. Here, we present a linked and manually verified dataset of this multiplex, multipartite, multi-labelled, spatial network. We enriched the network with institutional socio-economic data from the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER) and the Global Research Identifier Database (GRID). We geocoded the headquarters of institutions and characterised the attractiveness and quality of their environments based on Points of Interest (POI) data. The linked datasets provide relevant information to grasp a more comprehensive understanding of the mobility patterns and attractiveness of the institutions.

Gender Gap in the ERASMUS Mobility Program.

Project description:Studying abroad has become very popular among students. The ERASMUS mobility program is one of the largest international student exchange programs in the world, which has supported already more than three million participants since 1987. We analyzed the mobility pattern within this program in 2011-12 and found a gender gap across countries and subject areas. Namely, for almost all participating countries, female students are over-represented in the ERASMUS program when compared to the entire population of tertiary students. The same tendency is observed across different subject areas. We also found a gender asymmetry in the geographical distribution of hosting institutions, with a bias of male students in Scandinavian countries. However, a detailed analysis reveals that this latter asymmetry is rather driven by subject and consistent with the distribution of gender ratios among subject areas.

Multilayer Network Analysis of Nuclear Reactions.

Project description:The nuclear reaction network is usually studied via precise calculation of differential equation sets, and much research interest has been focused on the characteristics of nuclides, such as half-life and size limit. In this paper, however, we adopt the methods from both multilayer and reaction networks, and obtain a distinctive view by mapping all the nuclear reactions in JINA REACLIB database into a directed network with 4 layers: neutron, proton, (4)He and the remainder. The layer names correspond to reaction types decided by the currency particles consumed. This combined approach reveals that, in the remainder layer, the β-stability has high correlation with node degree difference and overlapping coefficient. Moreover, when reaction rates are considered as node strength, we find that, at lower temperatures, nuclide half-life scales reciprocally with its out-strength. The connection between physical properties and topological characteristics may help to explore the boundary of the nuclide chart.

Learning and coordinating in a multilayer network.

Project description:We introduce a two layer network model for social coordination incorporating two relevant ingredients: a) different networks of interaction to learn and to obtain a pay-off, and b) decision making processes based both on social and strategic motivations. Two populations of agents are distributed in two layers with intralayer learning processes and playing interlayer a coordination game. We find that the skepticism about the wisdom of crowd and the local connectivity are the driving forces to accomplish full coordination of the two populations, while polarized coordinated layers are only possible for all-to-all interactions. Local interactions also allow for full coordination in the socially efficient Pareto-dominant strategy in spite of being the riskier one.

International Peer-teaching: the LernKlinik Leipzig "Erasmus-Week" for Incoming Erasmus Students.

Project description:Introduction: This project report describes the development, pilot phase, evaluation and implementation of a preparatory course week for incoming Erasmus medical students at the LernKlinik Leipzig, the Skills and Simulation Centre of the Medical Faculty, University of Leipzig. Project description: The aim of this project is to prepare Erasmus students for their year abroad using peer-assisted teaching as the method of choice. Major intended outcomes were support of language and clinical practical skill competency development, as well as enhancement of integration among international and German-speaking peer tutors. The methodological framework of Ross and Cameron [1] was used in planning the Erasmus-Week. For planning the 2012 pilot project, a survey among Erasmus students of the academic year 2011/12 was performed. All succeeding cohorts were asked to participate in pre- and post-surveys which were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Results: Between 2012 and 2017, n=173 European medical students spent their Erasmus year in Leipzig. Of these, n=148 (86%) participated in the Erasmus-Week. The country of origin of most Erasmus students was Rumania (20,3%). Among the most positively received aspects of the Erasmus-Week, the active use of German for medical purposes and the use of peer-teaching as the method of choice to learn and repeat basic medical examination skills were mentioned. Students emphasized their wish for being able to participate in further course offers. Conclusions: Offering a preparatory course week for incoming Erasmus students focusing on language and clinical practical skills training using peer-teaching as the method of choice may facilitate the integration of Erasmus students into their foreign medical curriculum. Further studies are underway to elucidate if these experiences influence later professional careers and choice of employment.

Multilayer network construction and analysis pipeline for gene expression data

Project description:Molecular networks are key to understanding the complexity of biological systems. Despite the advances in network construction and analysis techniques, challenges remain in incorporating multidimensional interactions into a hybrid network model and reducing the complexity of large networks into functional modules or influential nodes. Here, we introduce CREAM, a user-friendly application that empowers biologists to construct multilayer networks by integrating gene expression data with various known interactions predicted by experimental and computational techniques, and to identify functional modules and prognostic biomarkers within these networks. When applied to multiple cancer types, CREAM outperforms state-of-the-art module detection methods in identifying biologically relevant modules. Further investigation of colon adenocarcinoma revealed numerous well-known cancer regulators and a promising new therapeutic target, miR-8485. Our in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated its inhibitory effects on colon cancer cell proliferation and migration. Overall, CREAM is expected to significantly advance network-based precision medicine research.

User abnormal behavior recommendation via multilayer network.

Project description:With the growing popularity of online services such as online banking and online shopping, one of the essential research topics is how to build a privacy-preserving user abnormal behavior recommendation system. However, a machine-learning based system may present a dilemma. On one aspect, such system requires large volume of features to pre-train the model, but on another aspect, it is challenging to design usable features without looking to plaintext private data. In this paper, we propose an unorthodox approach involving graph analysis to resolve this dilemma and build a novel private-preserving recommendation system under a multilayer network framework. In experiments, we use a large, state-of-the-art dataset (containing more than 40,000 nodes and 43 million encrypted features) to evaluate the recommendation ability of our system on abnormal user behavior, yielding an overall precision rate of around 0.9, a recall rate of 1.0, and an F1-score of around 0.94. Also, we have also reported a linear time complexity for our system. Last, we deploy our system on the "Wenjuanxing" crowd-sourced system and "Amazon Mechanical Turk" for other users to evaluate in all aspects. The result shows that almost all feedbacks have achieved up to 85% satisfaction.

Multilayer network switching rate predicts brain performance.

Project description:Large-scale brain dynamics are characterized by repeating spatiotemporal connectivity patterns that reflect a range of putative different brain states that underlie the dynamic repertoire of brain functions. The role of transition between brain networks is poorly understood, and whether switching between these states is important for behavior has been little studied. Our aim was to model switching between functional brain networks using multilayer network methods and test for associations between model parameters and behavioral measures. We calculated time-resolved fMRI connectivity in 1,003 healthy human adults from the Human Connectome Project. The time-resolved fMRI connectivity data were used to generate a spatiotemporal multilayer modularity model enabling us to quantify network switching, which we define as the rate at which each brain region transits between different networks. We found (i) an inverse relationship between network switching and connectivity dynamics, where the latter was defined in terms of time-resolved fMRI connections with variance in time that significantly exceeded phase-randomized surrogate data; (ii) brain connectivity was lower during intervals of network switching; (iii) brain areas with frequent network switching had greater temporal complexity; (iv) brain areas with high network switching were located in association cortices; and (v) using cross-validated elastic net regression, network switching predicted intersubject variation in working memory performance, planning/reasoning, and amount of sleep. Our findings shed light on the importance of brain dynamics predicting task performance and amount of sleep. The ability to switch between network configurations thus appears to be a fundamental feature of optimal brain function.

A New Multilayer Network Construction via Tensor Learning

Project description:Multilayer networks proved to be suitable in extracting and providing dependency information of different complex systems. The construction of these networks is difficult and is mostly done with a static approach, neglecting time delayed interdependences. Tensors are objects that naturally represent multilayer networks and in this paper, we propose a new methodology based on Tucker tensor autoregression in order to build a multilayer network directly from data. This methodology captures within and between connections across layers and makes use of a filtering procedure to extract relevant information and improve visualization. We show the application of this methodology to different stationary fractionally differenced financial data. We argue that our result is useful to understand the dependencies across three different aspects of financial risk, namely market risk, liquidity risk, and volatility risk. Indeed, we show how the resulting visualization is a useful tool for risk managers depicting dependency asymmetries between different risk factors and accounting for delayed cross dependencies. The constructed multilayer network shows a strong interconnection between the volumes and prices layers across all the stocks considered while a lower number of interconnections between the uncertainty measures is identified.

Enhancement of Carrier Mobility in Multilayer InSe Transistors by van der Waals Integration.

Project description:Two-dimensional material indium selenide (InSe) holds great promise for applications in electronics and optoelectronics by virtue of its fascinating properties. However, most multilayer InSe-based transistors suffer from extrinsic scattering effects from interface disorders and the environment, which cause carrier mobility and density fluctuations and hinder their practical application. In this work, we employ the non-destructive method of van der Waals (vdW) integration to improve the electron mobility of back-gated multilayer InSe FETs. After introducing the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as both an encapsulation layer and back-gate dielectric with the vdW interface, as well as graphene serving as a buffer contact layer, the electron mobilities of InSe FETs are substantially enhanced. The vdW-integrated devices exhibit a high electron mobility exceeding 103 cm2 V-1 s-1 and current on/off ratios of ~108 at room temperature. Meanwhile, the electron densities are found to exceed 1012 cm-2. In addition, the fabricated devices show an excellent stability with a negligible electrical degradation after storage in ambient conditions for one month. Electrical transport measurements on InSe FETs in different configurations suggest that a performance enhancement with vdW integration should arise from a sufficient screening effect on the interface impurities and an effective passivation of the air-sensitive surface.
