Qualitative Detection Toward Military and Improvised Explosive Vapors by a Facile TiO2 Nanosheet-Based Chemiresistive Sensor Array.

ABSTRACT: A facile TiO2 nanosheets-based chemiresistive gas sensor array was prepared to identify 11 kinds of military and improvised explosive vapors at room temperature. The morphology of TiO2 nanosheets was well-controlled by adjusting the concentration of HF applied during the preparation. Owing to the morphology difference, the TiO2 nanosheet-based sensors show different response values toward 11 kinds of explosives, which is the basis of the successful discriminative identification. This method owes lots of advantages over other detection techniques, such as the facile preparation procedure, high response value (115.6% for TNT and 830% for PNT) at room temperature, rapid identifying properties (within 30 s for 9 explosives), simple operation, high anti-interference property, and low probability of misinforming, and consequently has a huge potential application in the qualitative detection of explosives.

Multichannel Discriminative Detection of Explosive Vapors with an Array of Nanofibrous Membranes Loaded with Quantum Dots.

Project description:The multichannel fluorescent sensor array based on nanofibrous membranes loaded with ZnS quantum dots (QDs) was created and demonstrated for the discriminative detection of explosives. The synergistic effect of the high surface-to-volume ratio of QDs, the good permeability of nanofibrous membranes and the differential response introduced by surface ligands was played by constructing the sensing array using nanofibrous membranes loaded with ZnS QDs featuring several surface ligands. Interestingly, although the fluorescence quenching of the nanofibrous membranes is not linearly related to the exposure time, the fingerprint of each explosive at different times is very similar in shape, and the fingerprints of the three explosives show different shapes. Three saturated vapors of nitroaromatic explosives could be reliably detected and discriminated by the array at room temperature. This work is the first step toward devising a monitoring system for explosives in the field of public security and defense. It could, for example, be coupled with the technology of image recognition and large data analysis for a rapid diagnostic test of explosives. This work further highlights the power of differential, multichannel arrays for the rapid and discriminative detection of a wide range of chemicals.

On-Chip Chemiresistive Sensor Array for On-Road NO x Monitoring with Quantification.

Project description:The adverse effects of air pollution on respiratory health make air quality monitoring with high spatial and temporal resolutions essential especially in cities. Despite considerable interest and efforts, the application of various types of sensors is considered immature owing to insufficient sensitivity and cross-interference under ambient conditions. Here, a fully integrated chemiresistive sensor array (CSA) with parts-per-trillion sensitivity is demonstrated with its application for on-road NO x monitoring. An analytical model is suggested to describe the kinetics of the sensor responses and quantify molecular binding affinities. Finally, the full characterization of the system is connected to implement on-road measurements on NO x vapor with quantification as its ultimate field application. The obtained results suggest that the CSA shows potential as an essential unit to realize an air-quality monitoring network with high spatial and temporal resolutions.

Facile synthesis of the Ti3+ self-doped TiO2-graphene nanosheet composites with enhanced photocatalysis.

Project description:This study developed a facile approach for preparing Ti(3+) self-doped TiO2-graphene photocatalyst by a one-step vacuum activation technology involved a relative lower temperature, which could be activated by the visible light owing to the synergistic effect among Ti(3+) doping, some new intersurface bonds generation and graphene oxide reduction. Compared with the traditional methods, the vacuum activation involves a low temperature and low-costing, which can achieve the reduction of GO, the self doping of Ti(3+) in TiO2 and the loading of TiO2 nanoparticles on GR surface at the same time. These resulting TiO2-graphene composites show the high photodegradation rate of MO, high hydrogen evolution activity and excellent IPCE in the visible light irradiation. The facile vacuum activation method can provide an effective and practical approach to improve the performance of TiO2-graphene and other metal oxides-graphene towards their practical photocatalytic applications.

Ultrasensitive, Real-time and Discriminative Detection of Improvised Explosives by Chemiresistive Thin-film Sensory Array of Mn(2+) Tailored Hierarchical ZnS.

Project description:A simple method combing Mn(2+) doping with a hierarchical structure was developed for the improvement of thin-film sensors and efficient detection of the explosives relevant to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). ZnS hierarchical nanospheres (HNs) were prepared via a solution-based route and their sensing performances were manipulated by Mn(2+) doping. The responses of the sensors based on ZnS HNs towards 8 explosives generally increase firstly and then decrease with the increase of the doped Mn(2+) concentration, reaching the climate at 5% Mn(2+). Furthermore, the sensory array based on ZnS HNs with different doping levels achieved the sensitive and discriminative detection of 6 analytes relevant to IEDs and 2 military explosives in less than 5 s at room temperature. Importantly, the superior sensing performances make ZnS HNs material interesting in the field of chemiresistive sensors, and this simple method could be a very promising strategy to put the sensors based on thin-films of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures into practical IEDs detection.

Reliability of Aerosol Jet Printed Fluorescence Quenching Sensor Arrays for the Identification and Quantification of Explosive Vapors.

Project description:One of the primary challenges in explosive detection using fluorescence quenching is the identification and quantification of detected targets. In this work, we explore the reliability of aerosol jet printed sensor arrays for the discrimination of nitroaromatic traces using linear discriminant analysis (LDA). We varied the amount of the deposited material by controlling the printer's shutter to investigate the impact on the detection reliability. For a twofold variation of the amount of the deposited material, we report excellent classification rates between 81 and 96% for the discrimination of nitrobenzene, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, and 2,4-dinitrotoluene at 1, 3, and 10 parts per billion in air, respectively. Our results close to the detection limits indicate a remarkable identification and quantification of explosive trace vapors because of high control of the printing process. This work demonstrates the high potential of digitally printed fluorescence quenching sensor arrays and the excellent capabilities of LDA as a simple supervised statistical learning technique.

Nanosheet-type tin oxide gas sensor array for mental stress monitoring.

Project description:Mental stress management has become significantly important because excessive and sustained mental stress can damage human health. In recent years, various biomarkers associated with mental stress have been identified. One such biomarker is allyl mercaptan. A nanosheet-type tin oxide exhibited high gas selectivity for allyl mercaptan; thus, in this study, a sensor array comprising nanosheet-type tin oxide gas sensors was fabricated to detecting allyl mercaptan. Supervised learning algorithms were use to build gas classification models based on the principal component analysis of the sensor signal responses from the sensor array. The comprehensive data provided by the classification models can be used to forecast allyl mercaptan with high accuracy.

A chemiresistive methane sensor.

Project description:A chemiresistive sensor is described for the detection of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas that also poses an explosion hazard in air. The chemiresistor allows for the low-power, low-cost, and distributed sensing of CH4 at room temperature in air with environmental implications for gas leak detection in homes, production facilities, and pipelines. Specifically, the chemiresistors are based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) noncovalently functionalized with poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) that enables the incorporation of a platinum-polyoxometalate (Pt-POM) CH4 oxidation precatalyst into the sensor by P4VP coordination. The resulting SWCNT-P4VP-Pt-POM composite showed ppm-level sensitivity to CH4 and good stability to air as well as time, wherein the generation of a high-valent platinum intermediate during CH4 oxidation is proposed as the origin of the observed chemiresistive response. The chemiresistor was found to exhibit selectivity for CH4 over heavier hydrocarbons such as n-hexane, benzene, toluene, and o-xylene, as well as gases, including carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The utility of the sensor in detecting CH4 using a simple handheld multimeter was also demonstrated.

The Room-Temperature Chemiresistive Properties of Potassium Titanate Whiskers versus Organic Vapors.

Project description:The development of portable gas-sensing units implies a special care of their power efficiency, which is often approached by operation at room temperature. This issue primarily appeals to a choice of suitable materials whose functional properties are sensitive toward gas vapors at these conditions. While the gas sensitivity is nowadays advanced by employing the materials at nano-dimensional domain, the room temperature operation might be targeted via the application of layered solid-state electrolytes, like titanates. Here, we report gas-sensitive properties of potassium titanate whiskers, which are placed over a multielectrode chip by drop casting from suspension to yield a matrix mono-layer of varied density. The material synthesis conditions are straightforward both to get stable single-crystalline quasi-one-dimensional whiskers with a great extent of potassium replacement and to favor the increase of specific surface area of the structures. The whisker layer is found to be sensitive towards volatile organic compounds (ethanol, isopropanol, acetone) in the mixture with air at room temperature. The vapor identification is obtained via processing the vector signal generated by sensor array of the multielectrode chip with the help of pattern recognition algorithms.

DNA Methylation Patterns of Chronic Explosive Breaching in U.S. Military Warfighters

Project description:Epigenetic profiles in peripheral blood samples from 59 subjects (in two separate U.S. Military training sessions) were screened using Illumina Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChips, session 2 (31 subjects) were also screened post-exposure to a controlled, low-level blast during a 3-day explosive breaching course. Participants had varying numbers of exposures to blast over their military careers (empirically defined as high ≥ 40, and conversely, low < 39 breaching exposures) at baseline. Daily self-reported physiological symptoms were recorded.

Survival of forensic trace evidence on improvised explosive devices: perspectives on individualisation.

Project description:Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are weapons of modern times, used by terrorist groups and thereby causing substantial damage to communities. There is a widespread misconception that destructive conditions like heat, water or pressure destroy all forensic evidence. Moreover, the plausibility to detect identifiable fingermarks and DNA on components of IEDs is insufficiently known. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of neutralisation and explosion on latent fingerprints and touch DNA. In a majority of the cases, comparative fingermark- and DNA testing resulted in individualisation. In some cases, despite extremely low amounts of contact DNA detected after deployment of render-safe tools or detonation, full STR profiles could be constituted, even after applying fingerprint development techniques. This research shows that latent fingerprints and touch DNA on improvised explosives can be successfully detected after destructive conditions and possibly be linked to the perpetrators of such crimes. This individualising power offers perspectives to enhance forensic investigations of terrorism-related crimes.
