An improved Bayesian Modified-EWMA location chart and its applications in mechanical and sport industry.

ABSTRACT: Control charts are popular tools in the statistical process control toolkit and the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart is one of its essential component for efficient process monitoring. In the present study, a new Bayesian Modified-EWMA chart is proposed for the monitoring of the location parameter in a process. Four various loss functions and a conjugate prior distribution are used in this study. The average run length is used as a performance evaluation tool for the proposed chart and its counterparts. The results advocate that the proposed chart performs very well for the monitoring of small to moderate shifts in the process and beats the existing counterparts. The significance of the proposed scheme has proved through two real-life examples: (1) For the monitoring of the reaming process which is used in the mechanical industry. (2) For the monitoring of golf ball performance in the sports industry.

Improved adaptive EWMA control chart for process location with applications in groundwater physicochemical parameters and glass manufacturing industry

Project description:The adaptive exponentially weighted moving average (AEWMA) control charts are the advanced form of classical memory control charts used for efficiently monitoring small-to-large shifts in the process parameters (location and/or dispersion). These AEWMA control charts estimate the unknown shifts using exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) or cumulative sum (CUSUM) control charts statistics. The hybrid EWMA (HEWMA) control chart is preferred over classical memory control charts to detect early shifts in process parameters. So, this study presents a new auxiliary information-based (AIB) AEWMA (IAEWMAAIB) control chart for process location that estimates the unknown location shift using HEWMA statistic. The objective is to develop an unbiased location shift estimator using HEWMA statistic and then adaptively update the smoothing constant. The shift estimation using HEWMA statistic instead of EWMA or CUSUM statistics boosts the performance of the proposed IAEWMAAIB control chart. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to get the numerical results. Famous performance evaluation measures like average run length, extra quadratic loss, relative average run length, and performance comparison index are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed chart with existing counterparts. The comparison reveals the superiority of the proposed control chart. Finally, two real-life applications from the glass manufacturing industry and physicochemical parameters of groundwater are considered to show the proposed control chart’s implementation procedure and dominance.

Monitoring of manufacturing process using bayesian EWMA control chart under ranked based sampling designs.

Project description:Control charts, including exponentially moving average (EWMA) , are valuable for efficiently detecting small to moderate shifts. This study introduces a Bayesian EWMA control chart that employs ranked set sampling (RSS) with known prior information and two distinct loss functions (LFs), the Square Error Loss function (SELF) and the Linex Loss function (LLF), for posterior and posterior predictive distributions. The chart's performance is assessed using average run length (ARL) and standard deviation of run length (SDRL) profiles, and it is compared to the Bayesian EWMA control chart based on simple random sampling (SRS). The results indicate that the proposed control chart detects small to moderate shifts more effectively. The application in semiconductor manufacturing provides concrete evidence that the Bayesian EWMA control chart, when implemented with RSS schemes, demonstrates a higher degree of sensitivity in detecting deviations from normal process behavior. Comparison to the Bayesian EWMA control chart using SRS, it exhibits a superior ability to identify and flag instances where the manufacturing process is going out of control. This heightened sensitivity is critical for promptly addressing and rectifying issues, which ultimately contributes to improved quality control in semiconductor production.

Distribution-free Phase II triple EWMA control chart for joint monitoring the process location and scale parameters.

Project description:Distribution-free or nonparametric control charts are used for monitoring the process parameters when there is a lack of knowledge about the underlying distribution. In this paper, we investigate a single distribution-free triple exponentially weighted moving average control chart based on the Lepage statistic (referred as TL chart) for simultaneously monitoring shifts in the unknown location and scale parameters of a univariate continuous distribution. The design and implementation of the proposed chart are discussed using time-varying and steady-state control limits for the zero-state case. The run-length distribution of the TL chart is evaluated by performing Monte Carlo simulations. The performance of the proposed chart is compared to those of the existing EWMA-Lepage (EL) and DEWMA-Lepage (DL) charts. It is observed that the TL chart with a time-varying control limit is superior to its competitors, especially for small to moderate shifts in the process parameters. We also provide a real example from a manufacturing process to illustrate the application of the proposed chart.

The performance of a modified EWMA control chart for monitoring autocorrelated PM2.5 and carbon monoxide air pollution data.

Project description:PM2.5 (particulate matter less than or equal to 2.5 micron) is found in the air and comprises dust, dirt, soot, smoke, and liquid droplets. PM2.5 and carbon monoxide emissions can have a negative impact on humans and animals throughout the world. In this paper, we present the performance of a modified exponentially weighted moving average (modified EWMA) control chart to detect small changes when the observations are autocorrelated with exponential white noise through the average run length evaluated (ARLs) by explicit formulas. The accuracy of the solution was verified with a numerical integral equation method. The efficacy of the modified EWMA control chart to monitor PM2.5 and carbon monoxide air pollution data and compare its performance with the standard EWMA control chart. The results suggest that the modified EWMA control chart is far superior to the standard one.

An enhanced nonparametric EWMA sign control chart using sequential mechanism.

Project description:Control charts play a significant role to monitor the performance of a process. Nonparametric control charts are helpful when the probability model of the process output is not known. In such cases, the sampling mechanism becomes very important for picking a suitable sample for process monitoring. This study proposes a nonparametric arcsine exponentially weighted moving average sign chart by using an efficient scheme, namely, sequential sampling scheme. The proposal intends to enhance the detection ability of the arcsine exponentially weighted moving average sign chart, particularly for the detection of small shifts. The performance of the proposal is assessed, and compared with its counterparts, by using some popular run length properties including average, median and standard deviation run lengths. The proposed chart shows efficient shift detection ability as compared to the other charts, considered in this study. A real-life application based on the smartphone accelerometer data-set, for the implementation of the proposed scheme, is also presented.

A novel Bayesian Max-EWMA control chart for jointly monitoring the process mean and variance: an application to hard bake process.

Project description:In this article, we introduce a novel Bayesian Max-EWMA control chart under various loss functions to concurrently monitor the mean and variance of a normally distributed process. The Bayesian Max-EWMA control chart exhibit strong overall performance in detecting shifts in both mean and dispersion across various magnitudes. To evaluate the performance of the proposed control chart, we employ Monte Carlo simulation methods to compute their run length characteristics. We conduct an extensive comparative analysis, contrasting the run length performance of our proposed charts with that of existing ones. Our findings highlight the heightened sensitivity of Bayesian Max-EWMA control chart to shifts of diverse magnitudes. Finally, to illustrate the efficacy of our Bayesian Max-EWMA control chart using various loss functions, we present a practical case study involving the hard-bake process in semiconductor manufacturing. Our results underscore the superior performance of the Bayesian Max-EWMA control chart in detecting out-of-control signals.

An enhanced EWMA chart with variable sampling interval scheme for monitoring the exponential process with estimated parameter.

Project description:Control charts have been used to monitor product manufacturing processes for decades. The exponential distribution is commonly used to fit data in research related to healthcare and product lifetime. This study proposes an exponentially weighted moving average control chart with a variable sampling interval scheme to monitor the exponential process, denoted as a VSIEWMA-exp chart. The performance measures are investigated using the Markov chain method. In addition, an algorithm to obtain the optimal parameters of the model is proposed. We compared the proposed control chart with other competitors, and the results showed that our proposed method outperformed other competitors. Finally, an illustrative example with the data concerning urinary tract infections is presented.

Polydopamine-Modified Al2O3/Polyurethane Composites with Largely Improved Thermal and Mechanical Properties.

Project description:Alumina/polyurethane composites were prepared via in situ polymerization and used as thermal interface materials (TIMs). The surface of alumina particles was modified using polydopamine (PDA) and then evaluated via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that PDA-Al2O3 has better dispersion in a polyurethane (PU) matrix than Al2O3. Compared with pure PU, the 30 wt% PDA-Al2O3/PU had 95% more Young's modulus, 128% more tensile strength, and 76% more elongation at break than the pure PU. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results showed that the storage modulus of the 30 wt% PDA-Al2O3/PU composite improved, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) shifted to higher temperatures. The thermal conductivity of the 30 wt% PDA-Al2O3/PU composite increased by 138%. Therefore, the results showed that the prepared PDA-coated alumina can simultaneously improve both the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of PU.

PVA-PDMS-Stearic acid composite nanofibrous mats with improved mechanical behavior for selective filtering applications.

Project description:In this work, we report a facile way to fabricate composite nanofibrous mats of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and stearic acid (SA) by employing the electrospinning-technique, with PDMS fraction ranging from 40w% to nearly 80w%. The results show that for a predetermined fraction of PVA and SA, incorporation of an optimal amount of PDMS is necessary for which the mats exhibit the best mechanical behavior. Beyond this optimal PDMS fraction, the mechanical properties of the composite mats deteriorate. This result has been attributed to the ability of the SA molecules to mediate binding between the PVA and PDMS long-chain molecules via van-der-Waals bonding. The morphological, structural, mechanical, and thermal characterizations respectively using SEM, XRD, DMA/tensile test, and DSC lend support to this explanation. By this method, it is possible to control the hydrophilicity/oleophilicity of the mats, and the mats show an excellent selective permeability to oil as compared to water and successfully filter water from a water-in-oil emulsion. Incorporation of SA not only serves to aid in electrospinning of a PDMS-rich nanofibrous mat with good mechanical strength and control over hydrophilicity/oleophilicity, but also has a potential use in fabricating sheets impregnated with phase change materials for thermal energy storage.
