A new species of Phoebe (Lauraceae) from south-western China.

ABSTRACT: Here Phoebe hekouensis Bing Liu, W.Y. Jin, L.N. Zhao & Y. Yang from south-eastern Yunnan Province of China is described as new to science. This species is morphologically similar to P. megacalyx H.W. Li in the twigs being robust and brownish tomentose, the ovary densely pubescent and the tepals longer than 1 cm, but differs from the latter species by the leaves being broader, up to 18 cm (vs. 4.5-11.5 cm), the inflorescences shorter, ca. 10-15 cm long (vs. up to 23 cm), the ovary completely and densely pubescent (vs. pubescent only at the apical portion) and the stigma conspicuous (vs. inconspicuous). The new species also resembles P. macrocarpa C.Y. Wu, but differs from the latter by the tepals being longer, 9-13 mm long (vs. ca. 4 mm).

Complete chloroplast genome sequences of two endangered Phoebe (Lauraceae) species.

Project description:BackgroundPhoebe (Lauraceae) comprises of evergreen trees or shrubs with approximately 100 species, distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia and Neotropical America. A total of 34 species and three varieties occur in China. Despite of economic and ecological value, only limited genomic resources are available for this genus.ResultsWe sequenced the two complete chloroplast (cp) genomes of Phoebe chekiangensis and P. bournei using Illumina sequencing technology via a combined strategy of de novo and reference-guided assembly. We also performed comparative analyses with the cp genomes of P. sheareri and P. sheareri var. oineiensis previously reported. The chloroplast genomes of P. chekiangensis and P. bournei identically contain 112 genes consisting of 78 protein coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes, with the size of 152,849 and 152,853 bp, respectively. From the two chloroplast genomes, 131 SSRs were identified and 12 different SSRs located in five protein coding genes. The analysis showed the extremely conserved structure of chloroplast genomes with surprisingly little variations at the LSC/IR and SSC/IR boundaries. Moreover, the mean nucleotide diversity was found to be 0.162% for 77 regions, suggesting an extraordinarily low level of sequence divergence. Four highest divergent regions (trnH-psbA, rps14-trnT, petA-psbJ, ccsA-ndhD) with the percentage of nucleotide diversity higher than 0.50% were identified, which had potential use for species identification and phylogenetic studies.ConclusionThis study will facilitate our understanding of population genetics, phylogenetic relationship and plant evolution of Phoebe species.

Hoya pyrifolia (Apocynaceae), a new species from south-western Yunnan, China.

Project description:Hoya pyrifolia, a new species of Apocynaceae from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Results from phylogenetic analyses, based on combined DNA fragments of the nuclear ribosomal external transcribed spacer (ETS), intergeneric transcribed spacer (ITS) and three plastid DNA fragments (matK, psbA-trnH and trnT-trnL), showed that the new species was nested within a clade, including Hoya species distributed in the subtropical foothills of the Himalayas and the Tibet-Sichuan Plateau. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from its close relatives by its pyriform and slightly pubescent leaves, as well as the 4-flowered inflorescences.

Based on morphological characteristics and multilocus phylogenetic analyses, Metarhiziumpuerense was confirmed to be phylogenetically related to M.album, but was clearly separated and formed a distinct branch. In contrast, the host of Metarhiziumalbum was plants and leafhoppers and that lepidopteran larvae were the host of M.puerense. The diagnostic features of M.puerense were solitary to multiple stromata and smooth-walled, cylindrical with rounded apices conidia.

Diaporthe species in south-western China.

Project description:Three strains of the genus Diaporthe were isolated from different plant hosts in south-western China. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined ITS, β-tubulin, tef1 and calmoudulin dataset indicated that these strains represented three independent lineages in Diaporthe. Diaporthe millettiae sp. nov. clustered with D. hongkongensis and D. arecae, Diaporthe osmanthi sp. nov. grouped with D. arengae, D. pseudomangiferae and D. perseae and Diaporthe strain GUCC9146, isolated from Camellia sinensis, was grouped in the D. eres species complex with a close relationship to D. longicicola. These species are reported with taxonomic descriptions and illustrations.

A new species and a new series of Elatostema (Urticaceae) from south-western China.

Project description:The new series ElatostemasectionWeddellia series Xingyiensia L.D. Duan & D.H. Yin (Urticaceae) is described. In addition, its new species Elatostemaxingyiense L.D. Duan & D.H. Yin, endemic to Guizhou Province, is also described and illustrated with photographs. The new series is morphologically similar to series Melanocarpa W.T. Wang and series Sublinearia W.T. Wang. The new species is most similar to E.melanocarpum, E.sublineare, E.obscurinerve, E.langicuspe and E.youyangense in morphology, but can be visibly distinguished by a combination of characters, including leaf vein, male inflorescences, female inflorescences and persistent tepals.

The complete chloroplast genome of Phoebe minutiflora (Lauraceae).

Project description:Phoebe minutiflora H. W. Li, is a member of the Lauraceae family, while its generic relationship has been long-term controversial. The complete chloroplast (cp) genome of P. minutiflora was first reported in this paper. The cp genome was 152,654 bp in length with four typical quadripartite structures, which was consisted of a large single-copy (LSC) region of 93,697 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,809 bp, and two inverted repeats (IRs) of 20,074 bp. In addition, there were a total of 112 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that P. minutiflora should be placed into Machilus.

Modicellaguangxiensis (Mortierellomycota, Mortierellaceae), a new species from south-western karst areas of China.

Specimens which belong to Modicella were collected during our field investigations in tropical karst areas of China. The main distinguishing characteristics of M.guangxiensis are the number of sporangiospores per sporangium (11-18), the size of sporangiospores (14-34 × 12-27.5 μm) and the surface of some hyphae with hemispherical tuber. The phylogenetic analyses, based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) regions of rDNA sequences using Bayesian (BA) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods showed that the new taxon is closely related to M.reniformis.

Two new species of Microdochium from Indocalamus longiauritus in south-western China.

Project description:Microdochium species have often been reported as plant pathogens and saprophytes and are commonly isolated from some diseased plant hosts. The primary aim of the present study was to describe and illustrate two new Microdochium species isolated from the leaf spot of Indocalamus longiauritus in Yunnan Province, China, namely Microdochium yunnanense and M. indocalami, spp. nov., based on their morphology and multilocus phylogenetic analyses of the combined ITS, LSU, TUB2, and RPB2. DNA sequence data indicate that six strains represent three independent groups from related and similar species in Microdochium. Microdochium indocalami sp. nov. clustered with M. fisheri, M. lycopodinum, M. rhopalostylidis, and M. phragmitis. Microdochium yunnanense sp. nov. grouped with M. bolleyi. In addition, the strain SAUCC1017 is recorded as an unidentified species in Microdochium. Descriptions and illustrations of the new species in the genus and Microdochium sp. indet. are provided.
