Hoya pyrifolia (Apocynaceae), a new species from south-western Yunnan, China.

ABSTRACT: Hoya pyrifolia, a new species of Apocynaceae from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Results from phylogenetic analyses, based on combined DNA fragments of the nuclear ribosomal external transcribed spacer (ETS), intergeneric transcribed spacer (ITS) and three plastid DNA fragments (matK, psbA-trnH and trnT-trnL), showed that the new species was nested within a clade, including Hoya species distributed in the subtropical foothills of the Himalayas and the Tibet-Sichuan Plateau. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from its close relatives by its pyriform and slightly pubescent leaves, as well as the 4-flowered inflorescences.

Project description:Two new Hoya R.Br. species from Borneo are described and illustrated. The first, Hoyaruthiae Rodda was collected in Sabah on Bukit Baturong, a limestone outcrop. It is one of the few species in the genus to have clear exudate. It is compared with the morphologically related Hoyauncinata Teijsm. and Binn. The other, Hoyabakoensis Rodda, was collected in the kerangas forests of Bako National Park. It belongs to HoyasectionAcanthostemma (Bl.) Kloppenb., a section with numerous members in the Philippines but under-represented in Borneo.

Ceropegia jinshaensis (Apocynaceae), a new species from northwestern Yunnan, China.

Project description:Ceropegia jinshaensis D.T.Liu & Z.K.Wu (Asclepiadoideae, Apocynaceae), a new species from northwestern Yunnan along the upper Yangtze river of China, is described and illustrated. This species is similar to C. meleagris H. Huber, C. dorjei C. E. C. Fischer and C. aridicola W. W. Smith, but can be distinguished easily by its leaf shape and floral features, especially the corolla shape and size, the interior of corolla tube and coronal characters.

Project description:A new species of Hoya R.Br. from Sulawesi (Indonesia), Hoya isabelchanae Rodda & Simonsson, is described and illustrated. It is one of the largest flowered species in Hoya section Acanthostemma (Blume) Kloppenb. Its flowers are of comparable size to those of Hoya benchaii Gavrus et al., Hoya kloppenburgii T.Green, Hoya rundumensis (T.Green) Rodda & Simonsson and Hoya sigillatis T.Green ssp. sigillatis, all from Borneo. Among Sulawesi species it is compared with the vegetatively similar Hoya brevialata Kleijn & van Donkelaar and Hoya pallilimba Kleijn & van Donkelaar.

Project description:A new species of Hoya R.Br. from Mindanao (Philippines), Hoya migueldavidii Cabactulan, Rodda & Pimentel, is described and illustrated. It is a member of Hoya section Acanthostemma (Blume) Kloppenb. that is particularly speciose in the Philippines. It is compared with the similar Hoya loheri Kloppenb, also endemic of the Philippines, from which it differs in indumentum of the vegetative parts (pubescent vs. glabrous), the shape of the corolla (almost spherical vs. partly flattened) and the type of gynostegium (not stipitate vs. stipitate).

A new species of Kurixalus from western Yunnan, China (Anura, Rhacophoridae).

Project description:A new species of the genus Kurixalus (Anura: Rhacophoridae) is described from western Yunnan, China. Genetically the new species, Kurixalus yangisp. n., is closer to Kurixalus naso than to other known congeners. Morphologically the new species is distinguished from all other known congeners by a combination of the following characters: smaller ratios of head, snout, limbs, IND, and UEW to body size; male body size larger than 30 mm; curved canthus rostralis; weak nuptial pad; brown dorsal color; absence of large dark spots on surface of upper-middle abdomen; presence of vomerine teeth; gold brown iris; single internal vocal sac; serrated dermal fringes along outer edge of limbs; granular throat and chest; rudimentary web between fingers; and presence of supernumerary tubercles and outer metacarpal tubercle.

A new species of Phoebe (Lauraceae) from south-western China.

Project description:Here Phoebe hekouensis Bing Liu, W.Y. Jin, L.N. Zhao & Y. Yang from south-eastern Yunnan Province of China is described as new to science. This species is morphologically similar to P. megacalyx H.W. Li in the twigs being robust and brownish tomentose, the ovary densely pubescent and the tepals longer than 1 cm, but differs from the latter species by the leaves being broader, up to 18 cm (vs. 4.5-11.5 cm), the inflorescences shorter, ca. 10-15 cm long (vs. up to 23 cm), the ovary completely and densely pubescent (vs. pubescent only at the apical portion) and the stigma conspicuous (vs. inconspicuous). The new species also resembles P. macrocarpa C.Y. Wu, but differs from the latter by the tepals being longer, 9-13 mm long (vs. ca. 4 mm).

Diaporthe species in south-western China.

Project description:Three strains of the genus Diaporthe were isolated from different plant hosts in south-western China. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined ITS, ?-tubulin, tef1 and calmoudulin dataset indicated that these strains represented three independent lineages in Diaporthe. Diaporthe millettiae sp. nov. clustered with D. hongkongensis and D. arecae, Diaporthe osmanthi sp. nov. grouped with D. arengae, D. pseudomangiferae and D. perseae and Diaporthe strain GUCC9146, isolated from Camellia sinensis, was grouped in the D. eres species complex with a close relationship to D. longicicola. These species are reported with taxonomic descriptions and illustrations.

Plastome evolution and organisation in the Hoya group (Apocynaceae).

Project description:The genus Hoya is highly diverse and many of its species are popular ornamental plants. However, the relationships between Hoya and related genera (the Hoya group) are not fully resolved. In this study, we report 20 newly sequenced plastomes of species in the Hoya group. The complete plastomes vary in length from 175,405 to 178,525 bp while the LSCs vary from 90,248 to 92,364 bp and the complete SSCs vary from 2,285 to 2,304 bp, making the SSC in the Hoya group one of the shortest known in the angiosperms. The plastome structure in the Hoya group is characterised by a massive increase in the size of the inverted repeats as compared to the outgroups. In all ingroup species, the IR/SSC boundary moved from ycf1 to ndhF while this was not observed in outgroup taxa, making it a synapomorphy for the Hoya group. We have also assembled the mitogenome of Hoya lithophytica, which, at 718,734 bp, is the longest reported in the family. The phylogenetic analysis using exons from 42 taxa in the Hoya group and three outgoups confirms that the earliest divergent genus in the Hoya group is Papuahoya, followed by Dischidia. The relationship between Dischidia and the clade which includes all Hoya and Oreosparte taxa, is not fully supported. Oreosparte is nested in Hoya making it paraphyletic unless Clemensiella is recognised as a separate genus.

Complete plastome sequence of Hoya pottsii Traill and Hoya liangii Tsiang (Apocynaceae).

Project description:Hoya is the largest genus (about 350-450 species) within Apocynaceae. It is a subshrub or liana, epiphytic or epilithic. Most species grow in tropical and subtropical South and Southeast Asia. Here we report and characterize the complete plastid genome sequence of Hoya pottsii Traill and Hoya liangii Tsiang in an effort to provide genomic resources useful for promoting its systematics research. The complete plastome of H. pottsii is 161,565?bp in length, including two Inverted Repeat (IR) regions of 24,657?bp, a Large Single-Copy (LSC) region of 92,532?bp, and a Small Single-Copy (SSC) region of 19,719?bp. The plastome contains 115 genes, consisting of 81 unique protein-coding genes, 30 unique tRNA genes, and 4 unique rRNA genes. The overall A/T content in the plastome of H. pottsii is 62.40%. The complete plastome of H. liangii is 162,989?bp in length, including two IR regions of 24,841?bp, a LSC region of 93,292?bp, and a SSC region of 20,015?bp. The plastome contains 115 genes, consisting of 81 unique protein-coding genes, 30 unique tRNA genes, and 4 unique rRNA genes. The overall A/T content in the plastome of H. pottsii is 62.30%. The complete plastome sequence of H. pottsii and H. liangii will provide a useful resource for the conservation genetics of the two species as well as for the phylogenetic studies of Hoya.

New records of ant species from Yunnan, China.

Project description:As with many other regions of the world, significant collecting, curation, and taxonomic efforts will be needed to complete the inventory of China's ant fauna. This is especially true for the highly diverse tropical regions in the south of the country, where moist tropical forests harbor high species richness typical of the Southeast Asian region. We inventoried ants in the Xingshuangbanna prefecture, Yunnan, in June 2013, using a variety of methods including Winkler extraction and hand collection to sample ant diversity. We identified 213 species/morphospecies of ants from 10 subfamilies and 61 genera. After identification of 148 valid species of the 213 total species collected, 40 species represent new records for Yunnan province and 17 species are newly recorded for China. This increases the total number of named ant species in Yunnan and China to 447 and 951 respectively. The most common species collected were Brachyponeraluteipes and Vollenhoviaemeryi. Only one confirmed exotic species Strumigenysmembranifera, was collected, although several others were potentially introduced by humans. These results highlight the high biodiversity value of the region, but also underscore how much work remains to fully document the native myrmecofauna.
