Does world heritage list really induce more tourists? Evidence from Macau.

ABSTRACT: It is commonly believed that being listed on the World Heritage List (WHL) results in attracting more tourists. However, this assumption has not been generally subject to rigorous econometric approach in the existing literature. To fill this gap, we assess the impact of the accreditation World Heritage status on the "Historic Centre of Macau" in 2005 on visitor numbers to the territory to identify the real effect of WHL on fostering tourism. In doing so, because of the policy restrictions on the mainland Chinese tourists, such tourists have been excluded from the analysis. The empirical results indicate that there is no significant effect of WHL on promoting tourism other than possibly a short-run tourism-enhancing impact. Notably, this effect is particularly relevant to Asian tourists. This paper discusses these results in the wider context of econometric analyses of tourism.

A segmentation of collaborative tourists in World Heritage Sites.

Project description:Several previous studies have proposed the segmentation of tourists based on their motivations, their sociodemographic profile and the characteristics of their trip. This study has focused on proposing a segmentation of tourists that uses a peer-to-peer accommodation (p2p) based on their motivations, socio-demographic profile and the characteristics of their trip. This investigation is based on the application of a questionnaire to a representative sample of visitors in the city of Córdoba and who choose a peer-to-peer accommodation. Factorial analysis has been used as a data reduction technique in order to find homogeneous groups from the point of view of the reasons for choosing "peer-to-peer" tourism. The results confirm the existence of four types of p2p tourists clearly differentiated according to the motivations that have led them to choose this type of accommodation. The study shows the profile and preferences relative to the characteristics of the trip for each of the segments detected. Likewise, a high degree of fidelity towards the p2p accommodation modality was detected in the respondents-seven out of ten choose collaborative accommodation.

Do we really need more evidence to use hepatitis C positive donor kidney more liberally?

Project description:The number of patients listed active for kidney transplantation has continued to rise over the last 10 years, leading to significantly increased wait-list time for patients awaiting kidney transplantation in the USA. This increased demand has led to a supply-demand mismatch and should prompt clinicians to seek timely solutions to improve access to available organs. Hepatitis C virus positive [HCV(+)] kidneys continue to be discarded without clear evidence that they lead to poor outcomes in the current era of highly efficacious HCV treatment with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs). Increased utilization of HCV(+) donor kidneys will decrease wait-list time and improve availability of donor organs. Emerging data suggests that HCV can be successfully treated with DAAs after kidney transplantation with 100% sustained virologic response rates and no significant changes from baseline kidney function. Utilization of HCV(+) donor kidneys should be considered more liberally in the era of highly effective HCV treatment. Further studies are warranted to assess the long-term effect of HCV(+) donor kidneys in transplant recipients in the new era of DAAs.

A Sharing-Based Approach to Enticing Tourists to Behave More Environmentally Friendly.

Project description:Tourist behavior has a critical impact on the environmental sustainability of tourism. The hedonic nature of tourism and lack of an economic incentive make tourist behavior particularly hard to change. Making tourists behave more environmentally friendly would have substantial environmental benefits. This is the aim of the present study. Three alternative approaches are tested. The most successful approach-based on sharing monetary savings with guests-leads to a 42 percent change in one specific tourist behavior with negative environmental consequences. This new sharing-based approach significantly outperforms current approaches of increasing awareness of environmental consequences and of tourist ability to make a change. Tourism businesses should consider replacing current appeals with sharing-based schemes.

Risk of dengue for tourists and teams during the World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

Project description:BackgroundThis year, Brazil will host about 600,000 foreign visitors during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The concern of possible dengue transmission during this event has been raised given the high transmission rates reported in the past by this country.Methodology/principal findingsWe used dengue incidence rates reported by each host city during previous years (2001-2013) to estimate the risk of dengue during the World Cup for tourists and teams. Two statistical models were used: a percentile rank (PR) and an Empirical Bayes (EB) model. Expected IR's during the games were generally low (<10/100,000) but predictions varied across locations and between models. Based on current ticket allocations, the mean number of expected symptomatic dengue cases ranged from 26 (PR, 10th-100th percentile: 5-334 cases) to 59 (EB, 95% credible interval: 30-77 cases) among foreign tourists but none are expected among teams. These numbers will highly depend on actual travel schedules and dengue immunity among visitors. Sensitivity analysis for both models indicated that the expected number of cases could be as low as 4 or 5 with 100,000 visitors and as high as 38 or 70 with 800,000 visitors (PR and EB, respectively).Conclusion/significanceThe risk of dengue among tourists during the World Cup is expected to be small due to immunity among the Brazil host population provided by last year's epidemic with the same DENV serotypes. Quantitative risk estimates by different groups and methodologies should be made routinely for mass gathering events.

Declining soil Crustacea in a World Heritage Site caused by land nemertean.

Project description:Invasive non-native species are of great concern throughout the world. Potential severity of the impacts of non-native species is assessed for effective conservation managements. However, such risk assessment is often difficult, and underestimating possible harm can cause substantial issues. Here, we document catastrophic decline of a soil ecosystem in the Ogasawara Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site, due to predation by non-native land nemertine Geonemertes pelaensis of which harm has been previously unnoticed. This nemertine is widely distributed in tropical regions, and no study has shown that it feeds on arthropods. However, we experimentally confirmed that G. pelaensis predates various arthropod groups. Soil fauna of Ogasawara was originally dominated by isopods and amphipods, but our surveys in the southern parts of Hahajima Island showed that these became extremely scarce in the areas invaded by G. pelaensis. Carnivorous arthropods decreased by indirect effects of its predation. Radical decline of soil arthropods since the 1980s on Chichijima Island was also caused by G. pelaensis and was first recorded in 1981. Thus, the soil ecosystem was already seriously damaged in Ogasawara by the nemertine. The present findings raise an issue and limitation in recognizing threats of non-native species.

Real-world clinical outcomes of olaparib therapy in Chinese patients with advanced serous ovarian cancer treated in Macau.

Project description:BackgroundOlaparib has been approved as an active and maintenance therapy for patients with platinum-sensitive, BRCA-mutated high-grade serous ovarian cancer (SOC). However, the efficacy and safety data is lack among Chinese ovarian cancer patients.AimThis real-world study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety profile of olaparib in patients from mainland China, where olaparib is currently unavailable.Methods and resultsThis single-center, observational study included 65 patients with pathologically confirmed advanced serous ovarian cancer from Kiang Wu Hospital in Macau between December 2015 and September 2017. Progression-free survival (PFS) and other endpoints (treatment response, disease progression, and adverse events) were evaluated. PFS was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The median treatment duration was 4 months (range, 1-15). The median PFS for the overall population was 4.2 months (95% CI 2.7-5.2), while those for patients with wild-type BRCA1/2 and BRCA1/2 mutations were 3.1 months (95% CI 1.3-4.6) and 5.3 months (95% CI 2.8-7.1), respectively. The median PFS tended to be longer for patients on maintenance therapy (between 9.0 months [95% CI 1.4-17.5] and 10.0 months [95% CI 2.5-18.1]) than for those on active therapy (between 3.1 months [95% CI 2.1-3.8] and 3.0 months [95% CI 1.4-4.5]). Most patients (87.0%) experienced low-grade adverse events; the most common of which were fatigue (49.0%) and nausea (35.0%).ConclusionOur findings demonstrate clinical benefit of olaparib to mainland Chinese patients with high-grade SOC, particularly for patients with BRCA mutations and who require maintenance therapy.

Declining abundance of coral reef fish in a World-Heritage-listed marine park.

Project description:One of the most robust metrics for assessing the effectiveness of protected areas is the temporal trend in the abundance of the species they are designed to protect. We surveyed coral-reef fish and living hard coral in and adjacent to a sanctuary zone (SZ: where all forms of fishing are prohibited) in the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Marine Park during a 10-year period. There were generally more individuals and greater biomass of many fish taxa (especially emperors and parrotfish) in the SZ than the adjacent recreation zone (RZ: where recreational fishing is allowed) - so log response ratios of abundance were usually positive in each year. However, despite this, there was an overall decrease in both SZ and RZ in absolute abundance of some taxa by up to 22% per year, including taxa that are explicitly targeted (emperors) by fishers and taxa that are neither targeted nor frequently captured (most wrasses and butterflyfish). A concomitant decline in the abundance (measured as percentage cover) of living hard coral of 1-7% per year is a plausible explanation for the declining abundance of butterflyfish, but declines in emperors might be more plausibly due to fishing. Our study highlights that information on temporal trends in absolute abundance is needed to assess whether the goals of protected areas are being met: in our study, patterns in absolute abundance across ten years of surveys revealed trends that simple ratios of abundance did not.

Are we failing to protect threatened mangroves in the Sundarbans world heritage ecosystem?

Project description:The Sundarbans, the largest mangrove ecosystem in the world, is under threat from historical and future human exploitation and sea level rise. Limited scientific knowledge on the spatial ecology of the mangroves in this world heritage ecosystem has been a major impediment to conservation efforts. Here, for the first time, we report on habitat suitability analyses and spatial density maps for the four most prominent mangrove species--Heritiera fomes, Excoecaria agallocha, Ceriops decandra and Xylocarpus mekongensis. Globally endangered H. fomes abundances declined as salinity increased. Responses to nutrients, elevation, and stem density varied between species. H. fomes and X. mekongensis preferred upstream habitats. E. agallocha and C. decandra preferred down-stream and mid-stream habitats. Historical harvesting had negative influences on H. fomes, C. decandra and X. mekongensis abundances. The established protected area network does not support the most suitable habitats of these threatened species. We therefore recommend a reconfiguration of the network to include these suitable habitats and ensure their immediate protection. These novel habitat insights and spatial predictions can form the basis for future forest studies and spatial conservation planning, and have implications for more effective conservation of the Sundarbans mangroves and the many other species that rely on them.

Ocean Transport Pathways to a World Heritage Fringing Coral Reef: Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.

Project description:A Lagrangian particle tracking model driven by a regional ocean circulation model was used to investigate the seasonally varying connectivity patterns within the shelf circulation surrounding the 300 km long Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia (WA) during 2009-2010. Forward-in-time simulations revealed that surface water was transported equatorward and offshore in summer due to the upwelling-favorable winds. In winter, however, water was transported polewards down the WA coast due to the seasonally strong Leeuwin Current. Using backward-in-time simulations, the subsurface transport pathways revealed two main source regions of shelf water reaching Ningaloo Reef: (1) a year-round source to the northeast in the upper 100 m of water column; and (2) during the summer, an additional source offshore and to the west of Ningaloo in depths between ~30 and ~150 m. Transient wind-driven coastal upwelling, onshore geostrophic transport and stirring by offshore eddies were identified as the important mechanisms influencing the source water origins. The identification of these highly time-dependent transport pathways and source water locations is an essential step towards quantifying how key material (e.g., nutrients, larvae, contaminants, etc.) is exchanged between Ningaloo Reef and the surrounding shelf ocean, and how this is mechanistically coupled to the complex ocean dynamics in this region.

Does dishonesty really invite third-party punishment? Results of a more stringent test.

Project description:Many experiments have demonstrated that people are willing to incur cost to punish norm violators even when they are not directly harmed by the violation. Such altruistic third-party punishment is often considered an evolutionary underpinning of large-scale human cooperation. However, some scholars argue that previously demonstrated altruistic third-party punishment against fairness-norm violations may be an experimental artefact. For example, envy-driven retaliatory behaviour (i.e. spite) towards better-off unfair game players may be misidentified as altruistic punishment. Indeed, a recent experiment demonstrated that participants ceased to inflict third-party punishment against an unfair player once a series of key methodological problems were systematically controlled for. Noticing that a previous finding regarding apparently altruistic third-party punishment against honesty-norm violations may have been subject to methodological issues, we used a different and what we consider to be a more sound design to evaluate these findings. Third-party punishment against dishonest players withstood this more stringent test.
