Data on strategic performance of Greek universities during the economic recession: A multiple criteria approach.

ABSTRACT: In this article we provide data from seven Greek Universities during the economic recession. Based on the data that has been collected we assess the strategic performance of the universities using the aggregation disaggregation theory of the Multiple Criteria Analysis. Via the proposed algorithm we reveal the cognitive style and the behavior style in order to assess the strategic performance of the universities and more over we elucidate possible strategic actions.

Project description:This article presents a performance dataset of 93 Russian universities, collected from 2015 to 2018 and evaluated according to 24 indicators. These data were gathered from materials, published in the process of monitoring the effectiveness of higher education institutions by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Web of Science (citation-based research analytics tool InCites) and Scopus (citation-based research analytics tool SciVal) databases, and information from international ranking agencies QS, THE, ARWU. The dataset comprises the assessments of university performances according to the most important indicators used in socio-economic studies of comparative analysis of higher education system development levels in different countries: educational, scientific and research, international, financial and economic performance and international public recognition (university positions in leading international rankings). Evaluated universities are grouped pursuant to their missions: Federal Universities (FU), National Research Universities (NRU), Flagship Universities (FlU) and university-participants of the Russian Academic Excellence Project (Project 5-100). The indicators for the comparative analysis are aggregated by the type of activities and analyzed based on the calculation of median values and Displaced Ideal Method. The dataset can be helpful to researchers, university administration, specialists of higher education system, etc. Data processing can be executed using data mining methods, machine learning, and pattern analysis for the development of intellectual structures, applicable for university performance assessment in different educational systems. Presented data allows us to assert that the implementation of targeted support for leading Russian universities has a positive impact on the development of Russian higher education increasing its role on the international academic arena. Leading national research university-participants of the Project 5-100 had the greatest influence on increasing the competitiveness of Russian education in the world.

Project description:BackgroundIn 2019, tuberculosis incidence and mortality in Brazil were 46 and 3·3 per 100 000 population, respectively, and the country has reported rising tuberculosis case rates since 2016, following an economic crisis beginning in mid-2014. We aimed to estimate the number of excess tuberculosis cases and deaths during the recession period, and assessed potential causes.MethodsIn this multi-level regression modelling study, we extracted tuberculosis case notifications from Brazil's National Notifiable Disease Information System (known as SINAN), and tuberculosis deaths from the Mortality Information System (known as SIM), for all ages. We fitted mixed-effects regression models estimating trends in these outcomes-stratified by sex, age group, and state-during the pre-recession period (Jan 1, 2010-Dec 31, 2014). We calculated excess cases and deaths between Jan 1, 2015, and Dec 31, 2019 (the recession period) as the difference between reported values and a counterfactual of continued pre-recession trends. We examined the relationship between excess cases and possible explanatory factors using ordinary least squares regression. We tested the robustness of our findings to alternative model specifications related to the pre-recession period and criteria for defining tuberculosis deaths.FindingsWe estimated 22 900 excess tuberculosis cases (95% uncertainty interval 18 100-27 500) during 2015-19. By 2019, reported cases were 12% (10-13) higher than predicted by historical trends. 54% (44-66) of excess cases occurred among 20-29-year-old men. In this group, reported cases in 2019 were 30% (25-36) higher than predicted. Excess cases were positively associated with an increasing fraction of cases among incarcerated individuals (p=0·001) and higher unemployment (p=0·04) at the state level. Estimated excess deaths for 2015-19 were not statistically significant from 0 (-600 [-2100 to 1000]). These results were robust to alternative definitions of the pre-recession period and criteria for defining tuberculosis deaths.InterpretationTuberculosis cases in Brazil rose substantially in 2015-19 during the recession, largely affecting young men. This increase seems to be linked to increasing tuberculosis transmission among incarcerated populations. Project description:IntroductionDespite the well-known link between stress and smoking, evidence for associations between economic recession, financial stress, and smoking is contradictory. In this study, we assess whether women were more likely to continue smoking during pregnancy if they were exposed to the UK 2008-2010 economic recession during pregnancy than those who were unexposed, and whether this relationship is mediated by financial stress.MethodsWe used cross-sectional data on 2775 pregnant women who were regular smokers before pregnancy and who were enrolled in the UK Born in Bradford cohort study between March 2007 and December 2010. The cutoff date for exposure to recession was set as August 1, 2008, based on local and national economic data. Multivariable logistic regression analysis included potential confounders: maternal age, parity, cohabitation, ethnicity, and maternal age. The mediating role of financial stress was analyzed using "worse off financially" and a "difficult financial situation" as indicators of financial stress in Sobel-Goodman mediation tests with bootstrap resampling.ResultsAfter taking into account potential confounders, exposure to recession was associated with continued smoking during pregnancy (OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.41, p = 0.03). A worse financial situation and a difficult financial situation were identified as mediators, explaining 8.4% and 17.6%, respectively, of the relationship between exposure to recession and smoking during pregnancy.ConclusionsSmoking during pregnancy is associated with exposure to the UK 2008-2010 economic recession during pregnancy, and this relationship is partly mediated by financial stress.ImplicationsHealth inequalities in smoking during pregnancy are affected by economic recession, as those who are most likely to smoke are also most likely to experience the financial stress resulting from economic recession. Socioeconomic conditions at the societal and individual level are important targets when aiming to reduce rates of smoking during pregnancy.
