Data sets of measured pantograph voltage and current of European AC railways.

ABSTRACT: AC railways are characterized by peculiar Power Quality phenomena, where moving loads (trains, locomotives, etc.) interact with the supply network that provides electrical energy through the overhead contact line. Distortion, resonances, transients overlap in a complex dynamic scenario, that sees several and various problems of Power Quality, network stability, power and energy metering and disturbance to systems and equipment. For all related studies and analysis raw experimental data are extremely important. The provided data consists of time-domain waveforms of sampled pantograph voltage and current: each recording is tagged with the specific train operating condition (traction, cruising/coasting, braking, standstill), the active power and the speed, to support correlation and clustering of data.

Project description:This data article describes eleven datasets collected from laboratory individual tests with two DC motors of the same model. The motors are proposed to be used as the actuators of an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV). Each dataset shares the same structure, with the measurement of twelve variables: instant of measurement, encoder pulse counts, calculated motor velocity, raw current, calculated current, raw voltage from output A1, raw voltage from output B1, calculated voltage from output A1, calculated voltage from output B1, potential difference applied to the motor terminals, motor status, and the Arduino analog output value in pulse width modulation (PWM). The data are helpful to model and identify the system considering its dynamics. Such consideration on control systems design, specifically on AGV position control, can improve the controller accuracy. It also can be useful to study robot design, and mobile robot and AGV simulation.

Dataset of measured and commented pantograph electric arcs in DC railways.

Project description:DC railways are characterized by particularly intense arcing caused by pantograph detachment, due to the large current intensity and the general implementation of onboard resonant filters, whose transient response is triggered by electric transients including electric arcs. Electric arc depends on the train speed (the relative speed between the sliding contact over the pantograph and the hot spot on the catenary system), the intensity of the collected pantograph current and the line voltage level. Electric arcs are broadband in nature and can trigger the system transient response dominated by the resonant filter, besides interfering with the operation of onboard equipment (such as for energy conversion and metering).

Current-voltage characteristics of single-molecule diarylethene junctions measured with adjustable gold electrodes in solution.

Project description:We report on an experimental analysis of the charge transport through sulfur-free photochromic molecular junctions. The conductance of individual molecules contacted with gold electrodes and the current-voltage characteristics of these junctions are measured in a mechanically controlled break-junction system at room temperature and in liquid environment. We compare the transport properties of a series of molecules, labeled TSC, MN, and 4Py, with the same switching core but varying side-arms and end-groups designed for providing the mechanical and electrical contact to the gold electrodes. We perform a detailed analysis of the transport properties of TSC in its open and closed states. We find rather broad distributions of conductance values in both states. The analysis, based on the assumption that the current is carried by a single dominating molecular orbital, reveals distinct differences between both states. We discuss the appearance of diode-like behavior for the particular species 4Py that features end-groups, which preferentially couple to the metal electrode by physisorption. We show that the energetic position of the molecular orbital varies as a function of the transmission. Finally, we show for the species MN that the use of two cyano end-groups on each side considerably enhances the coupling strength compared to the typical behavior of a single cyano group.

Coherent ac spin current transmission across an antiferromagnetic CoO insulator.

Project description:The recent discovery of spin current transmission through antiferromagnetic insulating materials opens up vast opportunities for fundamental physics and spintronics applications. The question currently surrounding this topic is: whether and how could THz antiferromagnetic magnons mediate a GHz spin current? This mismatch of frequencies becomes particularly critical for the case of coherent ac spin current, raising the fundamental question of whether a GHz ac spin current can ever keep its coherence inside an antiferromagnetic insulator and so drive the spin precession of another ferromagnet layer coherently? Utilizing element- and time-resolved x-ray pump-probe measurements on Py/Ag/CoO/Ag/Fe75Co25/MgO(001) heterostructures, here we demonstrate that a coherent GHz ac spin current pumped by the Py ferromagnetic resonance can transmit coherently across an antiferromagnetic CoO insulating layer to drive a coherent spin precession of the Fe75Co25 layer. Further measurement results favor thermal magnons rather than evanescent spin waves as the mediator of the coherent ac spin current in CoO.

Analysis of multicrystal pump-probe data sets. II. Scaling of ratio data sets.

Project description:Two methods for scaling of multicrystal data collected in time-resolved photocrystallography experiments are discussed. The WLS method is based on a weighted least-squares refinement of laser-ON/laser-OFF intensity ratios. The other, previously applied, is based on the average absolute system response to light exposure. A more advanced application of these methods for scaling within a data set, necessary because of frequent anisotropy of light absorption in crystalline samples, is proposed. The methods are applied to recently collected synchrotron data on the tetra-nuclear compound Ag2Cu2L4 with L = 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methylindole. A statistical analysis of the weighted least-squares refinement residual terms is performed to test the importance of the scaling procedure.

Annoyance in Response to Vibrations from Railways.

Project description:Rail transport is a key stepping stone in the EU's transport policy and is pinpointed for investment and growth over the coming decades. This expanding infrastructure implies increased exposure to environmental stressors, such as noise and ground-borne vibrations. Little is known about the health impacts of exposure to these vibrations. The aim of this paper is to examine the association between annoyance from rail vibrations and the distance of residential dwelling from the railway. It reports the first results of a large epidemiological study, EpiVib, which was designed to investigate the long-term health effects of exposure to rail vibrations. The first part of this study examines a self-reported questionnaire. In total, 6894 individuals aged between 18 and 80 living within 1 km of a railway in west Sweden participated. Results presented here examine the association between distance to the railway and annoyance from vibrations and are stratified by train type. A positive association between closer distance and increased annoyance is seen. After adjustment for important modifiers, results showed that vibrations from freight trains and maintenance operations are reported to be moderately and highly annoying at distances of up to 400 m from the railway and diesel up to 300 m. Vibration from passenger and fast trains are significantly annoying up to 200 m from the track. Vibration from freight trains and maintenance operations were considered highly annoying up to 300 m from the track, diesel up to 400 m. Vibration from passenger and fast trains are not reported to be highly annoying after adjustment. Heavier, slower moving locomotives, in the form of diesel and freight trains, appear to be the source of annoyance at distances further from the railway compared to passenger and fast trains. This has implications in terms of property, transport, and infrastructure planning.

Health surveillance indicators for diet and physical activity: what is available in European data sets for policy evaluation?

Project description:BackgroundPolicies targeting diet and physical activity have the potential to improve health and well-being at a population level. However, the impact of these policies in Europe is currently unknown. Based on existing data, as well as on a needs assessment, we derived a catalogue of indicators that can be employed to evaluate such policies. These indicators may also inform the further development and harmonization of surveillance systems.MethodsForty EU experts agreed on a list of key indicators and ranked their priority for future surveillance. We mapped these indicators onto variables provided by ongoing European surveillance systems. Using a Likert scale (well matched, somewhat matched, poorly matched, unmatched), we assessed the suitability of these variables as measures for the indicators.ResultsKey indicators included behaviour outcome indicators relating to diet (n = 72) and physical activity and sedentary behaviour (n = 67) as well as upstream determinants of these behaviours. It was possible to map 72% of diet indicators and 86% of physical activity and sedentary behaviour indicators onto at least one variable in an ongoing surveillance system.ConclusionsCurrent monitoring and surveillance systems focus mainly on measuring 'downstream' indicators, while gaps exist in policy and environmental level data in dimensions such as inequality, funding and resources and governance.

Project description:The free available eutherian genomic sequence data sets advanced scientific field of genomics. Of note, future revisions of gene data sets were expected, due to incompleteness of public eutherian genomic sequence assemblies and potential genomic sequence errors. The eutherian comparative genomic analysis protocol was proposed as guidance in protection against potential genomic sequence errors in public eutherian genomic sequences. The protocol was applicable in updates of 7 major eutherian gene data sets, including 812 complete coding sequences deposited in European Nucleotide Archive as curated third party data gene data sets.

Common sleep data pipeline for combined data sets.

Project description:Over the past few years, sleep research has shown impressive performance of deep neural networks in the area of automatic sleep-staging. Recent studies have demonstrated the necessity of combining multiple data sets to obtain sufficiently generalizing results. However, working with large amounts of sleep data can be challenging, both from a hardware perspective and because of the different preprocessing steps necessary for distinct data sources. Here we review the possible obstacles and present an open-source pipeline for automatic data loading. Our solution includes both a standardized data store as well as a 'data serving' portion which can be used to train neural networks on the standardized data, allowing for different configuration options for different studies and machine learning designs. The pipeline, including implementation, is made public to ensure better and more reproducible sleep research.

Voltage-current properties of superconducting amorphous tungsten nanostrips.

Project description:The voltage-current (V-I) characteristics of tungsten (W) strips patterned by focused-ion-beam assisted deposition were studied at different temperatures and various magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the strips. At fields of 1 Tesla (T) and 2 T, a scaling behavior was observed in V-I isotherms, which can be fitted by quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3D) vortex-glass (VG) to liquid transition theory.
