Project description:AC railways are characterized by peculiar Power Quality phenomena, where moving loads (trains, locomotives, etc.) interact with the supply network that provides electrical energy through the overhead contact line. Distortion, resonances, transients overlap in a complex dynamic scenario, that sees several and various problems of Power Quality, network stability, power and energy metering and disturbance to systems and equipment. For all related studies and analysis raw experimental data are extremely important. The provided data consists of time-domain waveforms of sampled pantograph voltage and current: each recording is tagged with the specific train operating condition (traction, cruising/coasting, braking, standstill), the active power and the speed, to support correlation and clustering of data.

Project description:China has the world's longest high-speed rail (HSR) network, marked by dense transportation and complex operations. However, frequent train use coupled with extreme weather conditions has led to rising subgrade issues. Existing railway defect records suffer from inconsistency, hindering direct applicability. Currently, there is a lack of a relevant dataset dedicated to HSR subgrade defects. To bridge this gap, we developed a comprehensive georeferenced dataset that encompasses defect records extracted from peer-reviewed literature published between 1999 and 2023 in China. Rigorous quality control procedures were implemented to eliminate duplicate data and ensure the accuracy of the dataset. The dataset consists of georeferenced records for eight different defects, spanning across 661 locations and categorized at various scales, ranging from provinces to townships. The most commonly reported defect types include subgrade settlement, frost damage, uplift deformation, and mud pumping. This dataset provides a comprehensive map of historical subgrade defects affecting high-speed railways in China. It could facilitate operational risk assessments and the prediction of subgrade performance.

Project description:We investigate a dc electric concentrator for steady current fields theoretically and experimentally. Based on the transformation electrostatics, we show that the dc concentrator can focus electric currents into the central concentrated region and enhance the electric field and current density. Outside the concentrator, the current lines are distributed as the same as those in a homogeneous conducting material. Hence, such a dc electric concentrator has no impact on other external devices. Using the analogy between electrically conducting materials and resistor networks, we design, fabricate, and test a dc concentrator using the circuit theory. The measured results agree very well with the theoretical predictions and numerical simulations, demonstrating the perfect concentrating performance.

Project description:The 50/60 Hz alternating current (AC) electric power has been the standard and most flexible energy source powering our modern societies for one and a half centuries since the war of the currents: AC versus direct current (DC). A reactive power concept that was introduced at the beginning of the AC power was very useful for circuit/system analysis, design, control, optimization, and ultimately for more efficient and stable generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. The initial reactive power theory was based on single-phase sinusoidal AC power to capture inductive and capacitive power that yields to net-zero average power over one fundamental cycle. Soon it was expanded to non-sinusoidal AC power and finally to instantaneous three-phase AC power. However, these reactive power theories remain separate and limited to special cases and have never been consolidated and made valid to all cases. Today, more widespread adoption of power electronics and renewable energy is bringing back DC power into the electric grids. The reactive power concept has never been applied to DC power systems. There is no reactive power in DC power systems according to the existing reactive power theories. Do DC power systems really have no reactive power? Capacitors and inductors are widely used in DC just like in AC power systems. Are they not reactive power components? Why are they different from their AC counterparts? Furthermore, are batteries active or reactive power components? What about active devices like power converters (or inverters) with AC (or DC) on one side and DC (or AC) on the other? Do they generate or consume reactive power? Finally, what about AC and DC hybrid power systems? How to define reactive power in such a complex power system that has a multitude of loads, buses, and sources? Is there reactive power between any two loads, any two buses, or any two sources in a power system and what is the total reactive power in such a complex power system as a whole? As the motivation and goal of this paper to answer the above basic questions, to unify the existing AC reactive power theories and to ultimately provide theoretical and insightful guidance for system analysis, design, control, efficiency, optimization, and operation of complex power systems, a concept of spacetime (both spatial and temporal) active and reactive power (pq) theory-the spatiotemporal aspect of active and reactive power-is developed for both AC and DC power systems. The theoretical definitions and physical meanings of the spacetime reactive power will be developed, and real applications and thought experiments/cases/exercises will be explored and discussed. The developed mathematics to define the active (or real) and reactive (or imaginary) power-p and q respectively by dot (scalar) and cross (vector) products of multi-dimension spacetime vectors and time-space mapping principle/law can have some fundamental implications as well.

Project description:BackgroundThe formation of acetylcholine receptor (AChR) cluster is a key event during the development of the neuromuscular junction. It is induced through the activation of muscle-specific kinase (MuSK) by the heparan-sulfate proteoglycan agrin released from the motor axon. On the other hand, DC electric field, a non-neuronal stimulus, is also highly effective in causing AChRs to cluster along the cathode-facing edge of muscle cells.Methodology/principal findingsTo understand its molecular mechanism, quantum dots (QDs) were used to follow the movement of AChRs as they became clustered under the influence of electric field. From analyses of trajectories of AChR movement in the membrane, it was concluded that diffuse receptors underwent Brownian motion until they were immobilized at sites of cluster formation. This supports the diffusion-mediated trapping model in explaining AChR clustering under the influence of this stimulus. Disrupting F-actin cytoskeleton assembly and interfering with rapsyn-AChR interaction suppressed this phenomenon, suggesting that these are integral components of the trapping mechanism induced by the electric field. Consistent with the idea that signaling pathways are activated by this stimulus, the localization of tyrosine-phosphorylated forms of AChR β-subunit and Src was observed at cathodal AChR clusters. Furthermore, disrupting MuSK activity through the expression of a kinase-dead form of this enzyme abolished electric field-induced AChR clustering.ConclusionsThese results suggest that DC electric field as a physical stimulus elicits molecular reactions in muscle cells in the form of cathodal MuSK activation in a ligand-free manner to trigger a signaling pathway that leads to cytoskeletal assembly and AChR clustering.

Project description:Naturally-occurring, endogenous electric fields (EFs) have been detected at skin wounds, damaged tissue sites and vasculature. Applied EFs guide migration of many types of cells, including endothelial cells to migrate directionally. Homing of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to an injury site is important for repair of vasculature and also for angiogenesis. However, it has not been reported whether EPCs respond to applied EFs. Aiming to explore the possibility to use electric stimulation to regulate the progenitor cells and angiogenesis, we tested the effects of direct-current (DC) EFs on EPCs. We first used immunofluorescence to confirm the expression of endothelial progenitor markers in three lines of EPCs. We then cultured the progenitor cells in EFs. Using time-lapse video microscopy, we demonstrated that an applied DC EF directs migration of the EPCs toward the cathode. The progenitor cells also align and elongate in an EF. Inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor signaling completely abolished the EF-induced directional migration of the progenitor cells. We conclude that EFs are an effective signal that guides EPC migration through VEGF receptor signaling in vitro. Applied EFs may be used to control behaviors of EPCs in tissue engineering, in homing of EPCs to wounds and to an injury site in the vasculature.

Project description:In this work, the electro-coalescence process of three nanodroplets under a constant DC electric field is investigated via molecular dynamics simulations (MD), aiming to explore the electric manipulation of multiple droplets coalescence on the molecular level. The symmetrical and asymmetrical dynamic evolutions of electrocoalescence process can be observed. Our MD simulations show that there are two types of critical electric fields to induce the special dynamics. The chain configuration can be formed, when one of the critical electric field is exceeded, referred to as Ecc. On the other hand, there is another critical electric field to change the coalescence pattern from complete coalescence to partial coalescence, the so-called Ecn. Finally, we find that the use of the pulsed DC electric field can overcome the drawbacks of the constant DC electric field in the crude oil industry, and the mechanisms behind the suppressed effect of the water chain or non-coalescence are further revealed.

Project description:Biofiltration is a simple and low-cost method for the cleanup of contaminated water. However, the reduced availability of dissolved chemicals to surface-attached degrader bacteria may limit its efficient use at certain hydraulic loadings. When a direct current (DC) electric field is applied to an immersed packed bed, it invokes electrokinetic processes, such as electroosmotic water flow (EOF). EOF is a surface-charge-induced plug-flow-shaped movement of pore fluids. It acts at a nanometer distance above surfaces and allows the change of microscale pressure-driven flow profiles and, hence, the availability of dissolved contaminants to microbial degraders. In laboratory percolation columns, we assessed the effects of a weak DC electric field (E = 0.5 V·cm-1) on the biodegradation of waterborne naphthalene (NAH) by surface-attached Pseudomonas fluorescens LP6a. To vary NAH bioavailability, we used different NAH concentrations (C0 = 2.7, 5.1, or 7.8 × 10-5 mol·L-1) and Darcy velocities typical for biofiltration (U¯ = 0.2-1.2 × 10-4 m·s-1). In DC-free controls, we observed higher specific degradation rates (qc) at higher NAH concentrations. The qc depended on U¯, suggesting bioavailability restrictions depending on the hydraulic residence times. DC fields consistently increased qc and resulted in linearly increasing benefits up to 55% with rising hydraulic loadings relative to controls. We explain these biodegradation benefits by EOF-altered microscale flow profiles allowing for better NAH provision to bacteria attached to the collectors even though the EOF was calculated to be 100-800 times smaller than bulk water flow. Our data suggest that electrokinetic approaches may give rise to future technical applications that allow regulating biodegradation, for example, in response to fluctuating hydraulic loadings.

Project description:Liquid pumping can occur along the outer surface of an electrode under a DC electric field. For biological applications, a better understanding of the ionic solution pumping mechanism is required. Here, we fabricated CNT wire electrodes (CWEs) and tungsten wire electrodes (TWEs) of various diameters to assess an ionic solution pumping. A DC electric field created by a bias of several volts pumped the ionic solution in the direction of the negatively biased electrode. The resulting electro-osmotic flow was attributed to the movement of an electric double layer near the electrode, and the flow rates along the CWEs were on the order of picoliters per minute. According to electric field analysis, the z-directional electric field around the meniscus of the small electrode was more concentrated than that of the larger electrode. Thus, the pumping effect increased as the electrode diameter decreased. Interestingly in CWEs, the initiating voltage for liquid pumping did not change with increasing diameter, up to 20 μm. We classified into three pumping zones, according to the initiating voltage and faradaic reaction. Liquid pumping using the CWEs could provide a new method for biological studies with adoptable flow rates and a larger 'Recommended pumping zone'.

Project description:Regarding climate change and energy resource problems, cargo movement in the urban environment is essential to shift to a more sustainable mode. As cities seek to slash transport-related emissions and tackle traffic congestion, the cargo bike is showing itself to be an attractive and versatile last-mile delivery alternative. To this end, this article presents a series of datasets for the Electric Capacitated Travelling Salesman Problem (EC-TSP). This problem has been built for modeling and solving the e-cargo bike parcel distribution problem in urban environments. For the design of these datasets, real geographical data have been used that are in the city centers of Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra, and Larisa in Greece. These datasets have been used for the assessment of e-cargo bikes versus typical delivery vans in terms of operational efficiency and CO2e emissions. The entire benchmark is composed of 9 instances comprised of 14-29 nodes each. The datasets are publicly available for use and modification.
