Synthesis and Conformational Characteristics of Thermosensitive Star-Shaped Six-Arm Polypeptoids.

ABSTRACT: Star-shaped six-arm poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazine and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline with hexaaza [26]orthoparacyclophane derivative core were synthesized successfully using cationic ring-opening polymerization. Conformational behavior of prepared polymer stars were investigated by the methods of molecular hydrodynamics and optics in molecular dispersed solutions. It was shown that conformation characteristics of star-shaped polypeptoids depends on arm length, while the chemical structure weakly affects the behavior of the studied polymers in solutions. This behavior is caused by the close equilibrium rigidity of arms. The star-shaped polypeptoids have relatively high intramolecular density. All synthesized stars exhibit LCST behavior. Phase separation temperature depends on arm structure. It is lower for poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines, monomer units of which contains one methylene group more than monomers of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline.

Self-Organization in Dilute Aqueous Solutions of Thermoresponsive Star-Shaped Six-Arm Poly-2-Alkyl-2-Oxazines and Poly-2-Alkyl-2-Oxazolines.

Project description:The behavior of star-shaped six-arm poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines in aqueous solutions on heating was studied by light scattering, turbidimetry and microcalorimetry. The core of stars was hexaaza [26] orthoparacyclophane and the arms were poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazine, poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazine, poly-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, and poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline. The arm structure affects the properties of polymers already at low temperatures. Molecules and aggregates were present in solutions of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines, while aggregates of two types were observed in the case of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines. On heating below the phase separation temperature, the characteristics of the investigated solutions did not depend practically on temperature. An increase in the dehydration degree of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazolines led to the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and aggregation was the dominant process near the phase separation temperature. It was shown that the characteristics of the phase transition in solutions of the studied polymer stars are determined primarily by the arm structure, while the influence of the molar mass is not so significant. In comparison with literature data, the role of the hydrophobic core structure in the formation of the properties of star-shaped polymers was analyzed.

Synthesis and Hydrogelation of Star-Shaped Graft Copolypetides with Asymmetric Topology.

Project description:To study the self-assembly and hydrogel formation of the star-shaped graft copolypeptides with asymmetric topology, star-shaped poly(L-lysine) with various arm numbers were synthesized by using asymmetric polyglycerol dendrimers (PGDs) as the initiators and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) as an activator for OH groups, followed by deprotection and grafting with indole or phenyl group on the side chain. The packing of the grafting moiety via non-covalent interactions not only facilitated the polypeptide segments to adopt more ordered conformations but also triggered the spontaneous hydrogelation. The hydrogelation ability was found to be correlated with polypeptide composition and topology. The star-shaped polypeptides with asymmetric topology exhibited poorer hydrogelation ability than those with symmetric topology due to the less efficient packing of the grafted moiety. The star-shaped polypeptides grafted with indole group on the side chain exhibited better hydrogelation ability than those grafted with phenyl group with the same arm number. This report demonstrated that the grafted moiety and polypeptide topology possessed the potential ability to modulate the polypeptide hydrogelation and hydrogel characteristics.

Synthesis and properties of novel star-shaped oligofluorene conjugated systems with BODIPY cores.

Project description:Star-shaped conjugated systems with varying oligofluorene arm length and substitution patterns of the central BODIPY core have been synthesised, leading to two families of compounds, T-B1-T-B4 and Y-B1-Y-B4, with T- and Y-shaped motifs, respectively. Thermal stability, cyclic voltammetry, absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy of each member of these two families were studied in order to determine their suitability as emissive materials in photonic applications.

Star-Shaped Fe3-xO4-Au Core-Shell Nanoparticles: From Synthesis to SERS Application.

Project description:In this work, the preparation of magneto-plasmonic granular nanostructures and their evaluation as efficient substrates for magnetically assisted surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing are discussed. These nanostructures consist of star-shaped gold Au shell grown on iron oxide Fe3-xO4 multicores. They were prepared by seed-mediated growth of anisotropic, in shape gold nanosatellites attached to the surface of polyol-made iron oxide polycrystals. In practice, the 180 nm-sized spherical iron oxide particles were functionalized by (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) to become positively charged and to interact, in solution, with negatively charged 2 nm-sized Au single crystals, leading to nanohybrids. These hybrids acted subsequently as nucleation platforms for the growth of a branched gold shell, when they were contacted to a fresh HAuCl4 gold salt aqueous solution, in the presence of hydroquinone, a reducing agent, for an optimized nominal weight ratio between both the starting hybrids and the gold salt. As expected, the resulting nanocomposites exhibit a high saturation magnetization at room temperature and a rough enough plasmonic surface, making them easily attracted by a lab. magnet, while exhibiting a great number of SERS hot spots. Preliminary SERS detection assays were successfully performed on diluted aqueous thiram solution (10-8 M), using these engineered substrates, highlighting their capability to be used as chemical trace sensors.

Characterization, Stability and Biological Activity In Vitro of Cathelicidin-BF-30 Loaded 4-Arm Star-Shaped PEG-PLGA Microspheres.

Project description:BF-30 is a single chain polypeptide of an N-segment with an ?-helix from cathelicidin gene encoding, and it contains 30 amino acid residues, with a relative molecular mass and isoelectric point of 3637.54 and 11.79, respectively. Cathelicidin-BF-30 was entrapped in four-arm star-shaped poly(ethylene glycol-b-dl-lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) block copolymers (4-arm-PEG-PLGA) by a double-emulsion solvent-evaporation method. Three release phases of cathelicidin-BF-30loaded 4-arm-PEG-PLGA microspheres were observed, including an initial burst-release phase, followed by a lag phase with minimal drug release and finally a secondary zero-order release phase. The delivery system released BF-30 over more than 15 days in vitro. Furthermore, the material for preparing the microspheres has good biocompatibility and biodegradability. Additionally, based on the drug resistance of food pathogenic bacteria, the antibacterial effects of BF-30 on Shigella dysenteriae CMCC 51105 (Sh. dysenteriae CMCC 51105), Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as well as the stability of the in vitro release of the BF-30-loded microspheres were studied. The ?-helix secondary structure and antibacterial activity of released BF-30 were retained and compared with native peptide. These BF-30 loaded microspheres presented <10% hemolysis and no toxicity for HEK293T cells even at the highest tested concentration (150 ?g/mL), indicating that they are hemocompatible and a promising delivery and protection system for BF-30 peptide.

Star-Shaped Crosslinker for Multifunctional Shape Memory Polyurethane.

Project description:Star-shaped cyclophosphazene (ACP) was employed as covalent crosslinker to form a rigid segment in polyurethanes network, to enhance the mechanical performance and to add extra flame retardant property. The effects of different ACP contents on the shape memory ability and fire resistance performance of polyurethane (PU) were studied. Tensile tests suggested high flexibility of the PUs with the maximum elongation-at-break of 161.59%. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicated good shape recovery ratio of 72.58% after more than three repeated cycles. Under thermal treatment, the temporary shape could recover to its original state in 10 s. The peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat released (THR) and temperature at pHRR (Tp) of flame-retardant shape memory polyurethane (FSPU) by micro-combustion calorimeter (MCC) was as low as 183.2 W/g, 21.4 KJ/g, 330.8 °C respectively, suggesting good inherent fire-resistant performance. As amine-containing crosslinkers are one of the most common building units in thermosetting polymers, we anticipate that our finding will have significant benefits beyond shape memory and fire-resistance.

Star-Shaped Thermoplastic Elastomers Prepared via RAFT Polymerization.

Project description:Styrene-based thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) demonstrate excellent overall performance and account for the largest industrial output. The traditional methods of preparation styrene-based thermoplastic elastomers mainly focused on anionic polymerization, and strict equipment conditions were required. In recent years, controlled/living radical polymerization (CRP) has developed rapidly, enabling the synthesis of polymers with various complex topologies while controlling their molecular weight. Herein, a series of core crosslinked star-shaped poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene)s (SISs) was synthesized for the first time via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Meanwhile, linear triblock SISs with a similar molecular weight were synthesized as a control. We achieved not only the controlled/living radical polymerization of isoprene but also investigated the factors influencing the star-forming process. By testing the mechanical and thermal properties and characterizing the microscopic fractional phase structure, we found that both the linear and star-shaped SISs possessed good tensile properties and a certain phase separation structure, demonstrating the characteristics of thermoplastic elastomers.

Star-Shaped and Linear POSS-Polylactide Hybrid Copolymers.

Project description:Novel octakis-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (POSS-S-OH) as well as heptaisobutyl-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-S-OH) were synthesized. POSS structures, bearing both types of groups i.e., 2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl and the vinyl ones, pendant from the octahedral cage are also described. The synthetic pathway involved thiol-ene click reaction of 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH) to octavinyloctasilsesquioxane (POSS-Vi), and heptaisobutylvinyloctasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-Vi), in the presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile. The functionalized silsesquioxane cages of regular octahedral structure were used further as initiators for ring opening polymerization of L,L-dilactide, catalyzed by tin (II) 2-ethylhexanoate. The polymerization afforded biodegradable hybrid star shape and linear systems with an octasilsesquioxane cage as a core, bearing polylactide arm(s).

Free Surface Relaxations of Star-Shaped Polymer Films.

Project description:The surface relaxation dynamics of supported star-shaped polymer thin films are shown to be slower than the bulk, persisting up to temperatures at least 50 K above the bulk glass transition temperature T_{g}^{bulk}. This behavior, exhibited by star-shaped polystyrenes with functionality f=8 arms and molecular weights per arm M_{arm}<M_{e} (M_{e} is the entanglement molecular weight), is shown by molecular dynamics simulations to be associated with a preferential localization of these macromolecules at the free surface. This new phenomenon is in notable contrast to that of linear-chain polymer thin film systems, where the surface relaxations are enhanced in relation to the bulk; this enhancement persists only for a limited temperature range above the bulk T_{g}^{bulk}. Evidence of the slow surface dynamics, compared to the bulk, for temperatures well above T_{g} and at length and time scales not associated with the glass transition has not previously been reported for polymers.
