Project description:Introduction Depuis mars 2021, plusieurs publications ont rapporté des manifestations cutanées associées à l’infection COVID-19. Bien que non spécifiques, ces manifestations ont été massivement relayées par les revues scientifiques, les médias et les réseaux sociaux. L’objectif de ce travail était de déterminer si la prévalence et les caractéristiques de ces manifestations peu spécifiques avaient varié pour la même période entre 2019 et 2020. Matériel et méthodes Étude comparative rétrospective sur la prévalence de ces manifestations dermatologiques vues aux urgences dermatologiques du 01 mars au 30 avril 2020 en comparaison avec la même période de l’année 2019. Les manifestations incluses étaient : les urticaires, les pityriasis rosé de Gibert, les exanthèmes maculopapuleux, les rashs vésiculeux, les syndromes main-pied-bouche, les dysidroses atypiques et les pseudo-engelures. Les manifestations induites par les médicaments ont été exclues. Les tests statistiques utilisés étaient le test du Chi2 ou le test de Fisher. Résultats Entre mars et avril 2020, 877 observations ont été enregistrées vs 2874 au cours de la même période en 2019. L’âge moyen était de 41,6 ans (DS = 16,5) vs 40,8 (DS = 16,2) respectivement en 2020 et 2019. Le sex-ratio était de 0,33 en 2020 et 0,25 en 2019. La plupart des manifestations cutanées du COVID-19 étaient similaires à une atteinte cutanée survenant dans les infections virales courantes. Aucune augmentation de la prévalence des visites « non programmées » pour manifestations cutanées associées au COVID-19 chez les patients pris en charge au service de dermatologie n’a été notée : 8 % en 2019 et 7 % en 2020, p = 0,25. La prévalence des engelures était plus importante en mars/avril 2020 vs 2019. Discussion La plupart des séries publiées de signes cutanés associés au COVID-19 n’ont pas confirmé la présence directe du virus. L’association des lésions d’engelure au COVID-19 est controversée. Nous n’avons pas observé d’augmentation de la prévalence des tableaux d’éruptions cutanées décrites comme associés au COVID-19 en dehors des engelures.

Project description:Research on mathematics education has shown that learners' actions can influence how they think and vice versa. Much of this work has been rooted in the use of manipulatives, gestures, and body movements. Our article dissects the mechanisms that underscore the impact of embodied activities and applies this lens to explore how to harness the affordances of new technology to enhance mathematical thinking. This is especially crucial given the increasing accessibility of technology-such as digital touch devices, 3D printers, and location sensors-for constructing embodied experiences. Providing guidance for incorporating those tools, we focus on the role that embodied cognition can play in communicating mathematical concepts as well as in allowing learners to experiment and evolve their ideas. To inspire future integration of theory in the development of technologically enhanced embodied mathematics experiences, we provide examples of how this can be done. Finally, we outline future directions in the areas of design, implementation, and assessment of embodied learning of mathematics.

Project description:Need for Cognition describes relatively stable interindividual differences in cognitive motivation. Previous research has shown relations of Need for Cognition to Self-Control-a capacity that can be broadly defined as resistance to temptation-yet, the processes underlying this relation remain unclear. One explanation for the prediction of Self-Control by Need for Cognition can be an increased motivation to invest cognitive effort with higher levels of Need for Cognition. Another possible link could be that individual differences in the implementation of Self-Control intentions may play a moderating or mediating role for the predictive value of Need for Cognition. Such individual differences in the self-motivated initiation and maintenance of intentions are described by dispositional Action Orientation. Therefore, in the present study, Action Orientation was examined with regard to its possible role in explaining the relation of Need for Cognition to Self-Control. In a sample of 1209 young adults, Self-Control was assessed with two different self-report instruments and moderation and mediation models of the relationship between Need for Cognition, Action Orientation, and Self-Control were tested. While there was no evidence for a moderating role of Action Orientation in explaining the relation of Need for Cognition and Self-Control, Action Orientation was found to partly mediate this relation with a remaining direct effect of Need for Cognition on Self-Control. These results add to the conceptual understanding of Need for Cognition and demonstrate the relevance of trait variables to predict Self-Control.

Project description:Several challenges remain in data-independent acquisition (DIA) data analysis, such as to confidently identify peptides, define integration boundaries, remove interferences, and control false discovery rates. In practice, a visual inspection of the signals is still required, which is impractical with large datasets. We present Avant-garde as a tool to refine DIA (and parallel reaction monitoring) data. Avant-garde uses a novel data-driven scoring strategy: signals are refined by learning from the dataset itself, using all measurements in all samples to achieve the best optimization. We evaluate the performance of Avant-garde using benchmark DIA datasets and show that it can determine the quantitative suitability of a peptide peak, and reach the same levels of selectivity, accuracy, and reproducibility as manual validation. Avant-garde is complementary to existing DIA analysis engines and aims to establish a strong foundation for subsequent analysis of quantitative mass spectrometry data.

Project description:Background:Noninvasive interventions to aid healthy cognitive aging are considered an important healthcare priority. Traditional approaches typically focus on cognitive training or aerobic exercise training. In the current study, we investigate the effect of exercises that directly combine cognitive and motor functions on visuomotor skills and general cognition in elderly with various degrees of cognitive deficits. Subjects and Methods:A total of 37 elderly, divided into four groups based on their level of cognition, completed a 16-week cognitive-motor training program. The weekly training sessions consisted of playing a videogame requiring goal-directed hand movements on a computer tablet for 30 minutes. Before and after the training program, all participants completed a test battery to establish their level of cognition and visuomotor skills. Results:We observed an overall change in visuomotor behavior in all groups, as participants completed the tasks faster but less accurately. More importantly, we observed a significant improvement in measures of overall cognition in the subaverage cognition group and the mild-to-moderate cognitive deficits group. Conclusion:Our findings indicate that (1) cognitive-motor exercises induce improved test scores, which is most prominent in elderly with only mild cognitive deficits, and (2) cognitive-motor exercises induce altered visuomotor behavior and slight improvements in measures of general cognition.

Project description:BackgroundThe ability to simulate alternatives to factual events is called counterfactual thinking (CFT) and it is involved both in emotional and behavioral regulation. CFT deficits have been reported in psychiatric and neurological conditions, possibly contributing to patients' difficulties in modulating behaviors and affections. Thus, acknowledging the presence and possible consequences of CFT impairments might be essential for optimal clinical management.ObjectivesThis scoping review aims to summarize the previous evidence about CFT in psychiatric and neurological diseases to determine the extent of the previous research and what has been discovered so far, the variety of clinical conditions considered, the methodologies adopted, and the relevant issues to be addressed by future investigations.MethodsPsycInfo, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched to identify articles published up to January 2020, written in English and focused on CFT in adults affected by psychiatric or neurological conditions.ResultsTwenty-nine studies have been included; most of them focused on psychiatric conditions, a minority considered neurological diseases. The generation of counterfactual thoughts related to a negative real-life or a fictional event and the counterfactual inference test were the most popular tasks adopted. CFT impairments were reported in both psychiatric and neurological conditions, likely associated with a fronto-executive dysfunction.ConclusionsFuture research might further explore CFT in those psychiatric and neurological conditions in which CFT difficulties have been preliminary reported. Furthermore, it would be recommendable to extend this investigation to all the clinical conditions possibly at risk of fronto-executive dysfunction. In the end, we speculate that since CFT plays a role in driving everyday behaviors, it might be crucial also when medical decisions are involved; thus, future research might extend the investigation of CFT especially to those populations that implicate complex clinical management.

Project description:Urbanisation and climate change are altering the pattern of California serogroup viruses in North America. As La Crosse virus (LACV) is the most pathogenic of the California serogroup, it is important to identify changes in distribution, transmission and pathogenesis. A scoping review (ScR) was prioritised to summarise the global evidence on LACV. A comprehensive search strategy was used, identified references were screened for relevance and relevant articles were characterised. Each step was conducted by two independent reviewers using pre-tested forms. Analysis identified areas of research saturation and gaps. The ScR included 481 research articles that were mostly journal articles (78.2%) conducted in North America (90.9%) from 1969 to 2016. Most evidence focused on epidemiology (44.9%), virus characteristics (25.8%), transmission conditions (18.7%) and pathogenesis of LACV in hosts (18.3%). Fewer studies evaluated the accuracy of diagnostic tests (8.7%), the efficacy of treatments (3.5%), prevention and control strategies (3.1%), the economic burden of infection (0.6%) and social impact (0.2%) of LACV. None of the literature predicted the impact of climate change on LACV, nor were any cases reported in Canada. These findings are intended to guide research to close knowledge gaps and inform evidence-based decisions surrounding activities for the prevention and control of LACV.

Project description:Computational thinking is widely recognized as important, not only to those interested in computer science and mathematics but also to every student in the twenty-first century. However, the concept of computational thinking is arguably complex; the term itself can easily lead to direct connection with "computing" or "computer" in a restricted sense. In this editorial, we build on existing research about computational thinking to discuss it as a multi-faceted theoretical nature. We further present computational thinking, as a model of thinking, that is important not only in computer science and mathematics, but also in other disciplines of STEM and integrated STEM education broadly.

Project description:BackgroundDesign thinking is a problem-solving framework that has been used to enhance patient experiences, improve clinical outcomes, and refine medical curricula. This study reviewed the use of design thinking in health professions education.MethodsA search yielded 169 articles, which were excluded if they were: (1) not related to education; (2) lacking an application of design thinking; or (3) not associated with healthcare. The final review yielded 15 articles, which were analyzed using qualitative methods.ResultsAll articles were published in 2009 or later and were diverse in their context, participants, and approach. Six studies emphasized the early stages of design thinking, with inspiration and ideation stages fostered through a variety of activities, such as lectures, small group discussions, and workshops. Studies examined a range of outcomes, including self-efficacy, perceptions, and solutions to a specific problem.ConclusionsOur findings raise important considerations for health professions education, including the extent to which we should: 1) teach design thinking to students as a skill-based tool to prepare students for problem solving in complex healthcare environments; and 2) use design thinking to create, implement, and refine health professions curricula and educational programs. Despite the apparent benefits of design thinking, many questions for health professions education remain.
