piRNAs play a critical role in the regulation of transposons and other germline genes. In <i>Caenorhabditis elegans</i>, regulation of piRNA target genes is mediated by the <i>mutator</i> complex, which synthesizes high levels of siRNAs through the activity of an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.
