Whole-Genome Sequences of Salmonella Isolates from an Ecological Wastewater Treatment System.

ABSTRACT: Twenty-seven Salmonella isolates were collected from four locations within an ecological wastewater treatment system located at The Pennsylvania State University and were subjected to whole-genome sequencing. The sequences obtained were used for in silico characterization, including serotyping and phylogenetic relatedness analysis.

Project description:Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica strains are major foodborne pathogens with global public health importance. Foodborne salmonellosis can be life-threatening, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. We report the complete genome sequences of 20 nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica strains isolated in Rwanda. The reported 20 bacterial chromosomes and 8 plasmids each belong to 1 of 9 nontyphoidal Salmonella serotypes.

Whole-genome sequences of thirteen isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi.

Project description:Borrelia burgdorferi is a causative agent of Lyme disease in North America and Eurasia. The first complete genome sequence of B. burgdorferi strain 31, available for more than a decade, has assisted research on the pathogenesis of Lyme disease. Because a single genome sequence is not sufficient to understand the relationship between genotypic and geographic variation and disease phenotype, we determined the whole-genome sequences of 13 additional B. burgdorferi isolates that span the range of natural variation. These sequences should allow improved understanding of pathogenesis and provide a foundation for novel detection, diagnosis, and prevention strategies.

The isolates originated from food animals (n = 32) and human patients (n = 3). All isolates carried IncI1 plasmids, and many had additional plasmids detected along with virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes.
