Titanocenes as Photoredox Catalysts Using Green-Light Irradiation.

ABSTRACT: Irradiation of Cp2 TiCl2 with green light leads to electronically excited [Cp2 TiCl2 ]*. This complex constitutes an efficient photoredox catalyst for the reduction of epoxides and for 5-exo cyclizations of suitably unsaturated epoxides. To the best of our knowledge, our system is the first example of a molecular titanium photoredox catalyst.

Project description:Photoredox catalysis is a versatile approach for the construction of challenging covalent bonds under mild reaction conditions, commonly using photoredox catalysts (PCs) derived from precious metals. As such, there is need to develop organic analogues as sustainable replacements. Although several organic PCs have been introduced, there remains a lack of strongly reducing, visible-light organic PCs. Herein, we establish the critical photophysical and electrochemical characteristics of both a dihydrophenazine and a phenoxazine system that enables their success as strongly reducing, visible-light PCs for trifluoromethylation reactions and dual photoredox/nickel-catalyzed C-N and C-S cross-coupling reactions, both of which have been historically exclusive to precious metal PCs.

Visible-Light-Mediated Alkenylation, Allylation, and Cyanation of Potassium Alkyltrifluoroborates with Organic Photoredox Catalysts.

Project description:Iridium- and ruthenium-free approaches to protected allylic amines and alkyl nitriles under photoredox conditions are reported. An inexpensive organic dye, eosin Y, catalyzes coupling of Boc-protected potassium ?-aminomethyltrifluoroborates with a variety of substituted alkenyl sulfones through an ?-aminomethyl radical addition-elimination pathway. Allylic and homoallylic amines were formed in moderate yields with high E/Z selectivity. The mechanistic approach was extended using tosyl cyanide as a radical trap, enabling the conversion of alkyltrifluoroborates to nitriles via a Fukuzumi acridinium-catalyzed process.

Organocatalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Using N-Aryl Phenoxazines as Photoredox Catalysts.

Project description:N-Aryl phenoxazines have been synthesized and introduced as strongly reducing metal-free photoredox catalysts in organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization for the synthesis of well-defined polymers. Experiments confirmed quantum chemical predictions that, like their dihydrophenazine analogs, the photoexcited states of phenoxazine photoredox catalysts are strongly reducing and achieve superior performance when they possess charge transfer character. We compare phenoxazines to previously reported dihydrophenazines and phenothiazines as photoredox catalysts to gain insight into the performance of these catalysts and establish principles for catalyst design. A key finding reveals that maintenance of a planar conformation of the phenoxazine catalyst during the catalytic cycle encourages the synthesis of well-defined macromolecules. Using these principles, we realized a core substituted phenoxazine as a visible light photoredox catalyst that performed superior to UV-absorbing phenoxazines as well as previously reported organic photocatalysts in organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization. Using this catalyst and irradiating with white LEDs resulted in the production of polymers with targeted molecular weights through achieving quantitative initiator efficiencies, which possess dispersities ranging from 1.13 to 1.31.

Photoredox catalysis using infrared light via triplet fusion upconversion.

Project description:Recent advances in photoredox catalysis have made it possible to achieve various challenging synthetic transformations, polymerizations and surface modifications1-3. All of these reactions require ultraviolet- or visible-light stimuli; however, the use of visible-light irradiation has intrinsic challenges. For example, the penetration of visible light through most reaction media is very low, leading to problems in large-scale reactions. Moreover, reactants can compete with photocatalysts for the absorption of incident light, limiting the scope of the reactions. These problems can be overcome by the use of near-infrared light, which has a much higher penetration depth through various media, notably biological tissue4. Here we demonstrate various photoredox transformations under infrared radiation by utilizing the photophysical process of triplet fusion upconversion, a mechanism by which two low-energy photons are converted into a higher-energy photon. We show that this is a general strategy applicable to a wide range of photoredox reactions. We tune the upconversion components to adjust the output light, accessing both orange light and blue light from low-energy infrared light, by pairwise manipulation of the sensitizer and annihilator. We further demonstrate that the annihilator itself can be used as a photocatalyst, thus simplifying the reaction. This approach enables catalysis of high-energy transformations through several opaque barriers using low-energy infrared light.

PET-RAFT Polymerization Catalyzed by Small Organic Molecule under Green Light Irradiation.

Project description:Photocatalyzed polymerization using organic molecules as catalysts has attracted broad interest because of its easy operation in ambient environments and low toxicity compared with metallic catalysts. In this work, we reported that 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT) can act as an efficient photoredox catalyst for photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization under green light irradiation. Well-defined (co)polymers can be obtained using this technique without any additional additives like noble metals and electron donors or acceptors. The living characteristics of polymerization were verified by kinetic study and the narrow dispersity (Đ) of the produced polymer. Excellent chain-end fidelity was demonstrated through chain extension as well. In addition, this technique showed great potential for various RAFT agents and monomers including acrylates and acrylamides.

Green and Effective Removal of Aqueous Graphene Oxide under UV-Light Irradiation.

Project description:The potential extensive application of graphene oxide (GO) in various fields results in the possibility of its release into the natural environment with negative impacts on humans and the ecosystem. The UV-induced removal behavior of aqueous GO was evaluated in this study, and the effect of various parameters (including initial GO concentration, initial solution pH and co-existing ions) on removal rate of GO were investigated in detail. The results showed that UV-light induced a maximum removal rate of GO of 99.1% after 32 h irradiation without any additives, and that the photo-induced removal process in all cases fitted well with pseudo-first-order kinetics. Under optimal conditions, GO was completely removed, with initial GO concentrations of 10 mg/L while adjusting solution pH to 3 or adding Ca2+-containing salt. The GO and photoreduced graphene oxide (prGO) were characterized using High-resolution Transmission Microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The radical species trapping experiments and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) tests indicated that self-reduction of GO upon UV-light exposure could be achieved via photogenerated electrons from a GO semiconductor. Further mechanism study showed that the high efficiency of UV-induced GO removal came from UV-induced photoreduction, and pH-induced or cation-induced coagulation. This study provided a green and effective method to remove GO from aqueous solutions.

Solubility of Iridium and Ruthenium Organometallic Photoredox Catalysts.

Project description:Despite the exponential growth of the field of photocatalysis, for reasons that are not entirely clear, these precious photocatalysts are often used in the literature at loadings that exceed their maximum solubility. On an industrial scale, the quantity of any precious metal catalyst can be a substantial financial burden or a sourcing issue, not to mention concerns as to the ecological and earth abundance of these catalysts. We believe that inattention to solubility has made these reactions appear less efficient than they actually are, because much of the photocatalyst remains undissolved. Therefore, the maximum solubilities of iridium and ruthenium centered photocatalysts have been systematically identified in industrially relevant solvents. Further, a literature photocatalytic reaction which our results suggested was beyond the maximum solubility has been revisited, with interesting results.

Improved Conditions for the Visible-Light Driven Hydrocarboxylation by Rh(I) and Photoredox Dual Catalysts Based on the Mechanistic Analyses.

Project description:The improved catalytic conditions and detailed reaction mechanism of the visible-light driven hydrocarboxylation of alkenes with CO2 by the Rh(I) and photoredox dual catalysts were investigated. The use of the benzimidazoline derivative, BI(OH)H, as a sacrificial electron donor was found to increase the yield of the hydrocarboxylated product by accelerating the reduction process. In addition, the incorporation of the cyclometalated Ir(III) complex as a second photosensitizer with [Ru(bpy)3]2+ photosensitizer also resulted in the promotion of the reduction process, supporting that the catalytic cycle includes two photochemical elementary processes: photoinduced electron and energy transfers.

Laboratory-scale photoredox catalysis using hydrated electrons sustainably generated with a single green laser.

Project description:The ruthenium-tris-bipyridyl dication as catalyst combined with the ascorbate dianion as bioavailable sacrificial donor provides the first regenerative source of hydrated electrons for chemical syntheses on millimolar scales. This electron generator is operated simply by illumination with a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser (532 nm) running at its normal repetition rate. Much more detailed information than by product studies alone was obtained by photokinetical characterization from submicroseconds (time-resolved laser flash photolysis) up to one hour (preparative photolysis). The experiments on short timescales established a reaction mechanism more complex than previously thought, and proved the catalytic action by unchanged concentration traces of the key transients over a number of flashes so large that the accumulated electron total surpassed the catalyst concentration many times. Preparative photolyses revealed that the sacrificial donor greatly enhances the catalyst stability through quenching the initial metal-to-ligand charge-transfer state before destructive dd states can be populated from it, such that the efficiency of this electron generator is no longer limited by catalyst decomposition but by electron scavenging by the accumulating oxidation products of the ascorbate. Applications covered dechlorinations of selected aliphatic and aromatic chlorides and the reduction of a model ketone. All these substrates are impervious to photoredox catalysts exhibiting lower reducing power than the hydrated electron, but the combination of an extremely negative standard potential and a long unquenched life allowed turnover numbers up to 1400 with our method.
