A dual mesh finite domain method for the analysis of functionally graded beams.

ABSTRACT: A method that employs a dual mesh, one for primary variables and another for dual variables, for the numerical analysis of functionally graded beams is presented. The formulation makes use of the traditional finite element interpolation of the primary variables (primal mesh) and the concept of the finite volume method to satisfy the integral form of the governing differential equations on a dual mesh. The method is used to analyze bending of straight, through-thickness functionally graded beams using the Euler-Bernoulli and the Timoshenko beam theories, in which the axial and bending deformations are coupled. Both the displacement and mixed models using the new method are developed accounting for the coupling. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the methodology and a comparison of the generalized displacements and forces/stresses computed with those of the corresponding finite element models. The influence of the coupling stiffness on the deflections is also brought out.

An exact solution for the free-vibration analysis of functionally graded carbon-nanotube-reinforced composite beams with arbitrary boundary conditions.

Project description:We present an exact method to model the free vibration of functionally graded carbon-nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beams with arbitrary boundary conditions based on first-order shear deformation elasticity theory. Five types of carbon nanotube (CNT) distributions are considered. The distributions are either uniform or functionally graded and are assumed to be continuous through the thickness of the beams. The displacements and rotational components of the beams are expressed as a linear combination of the standard Fourier series and several supplementary functions. The formulation is derived using the modified Fourier series and solved using the strong-form solution and the weak-form solution (i.e., the Rayleigh-Ritz method). Both solutions are applicable to various combinations of boundary constraints, including classical boundary conditions and elastic-supported boundary conditions. The accuracy, efficiency and validity of the two solutions presented are demonstrated via comparison with published results. A parametric study is conducted on the influence of several key parameters, namely, the L/h ratio, CNT volume fraction, CNT distribution, boundary spring stiffness and shear correction factor, on the free vibration of FG-CNTRC beams.

Heat Conduction in a Functionally Graded Plate Subjected to Finite Cooling/Heating Rates: An Asymptotic Solution.

Project description:This work investigates transient heat conduction in a functionally graded plate (FGM plate) subjected to gradual cooling/heating at its boundaries. The thermal properties of the FGM are assumed to be continuous and piecewise differentiable functions of the coordinate in the plate thickness direction. A linear ramp function describes the cooling/heating rates at the plate boundaries. A multi-layered material model and Laplace transform are employed to obtain the transformed temperatures at the interfaces between the layers. An asymptotic analysis and an integration technique are then used to obtain a closed form asymptotic solution of the temperature field in the FGM plate for short times. The thermal stress intensity factor (TSIF) for an edge crack in the FGM plate calculated based on the asymptotic temperature solution shows that the asymptotic solution can capture the peak TSIFs under the finite cooling rate conditions.

Dual feed progressive cavity pump extrusion system for functionally graded direct ink write 3D printing.

Project description:Material extrusion Additive Manufacturing (AM), is one of the most widely practiced methods of AM. Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is what most associate with AM, as it is relatively inexpensive, and highly accessible, involving feeding plastic filament into a hot-end that melts and extrudes from a nozzle as the toolhead moves along the toolpath. Direct Ink Write (DIW) 3D printing falls into this same category of AM, however is primarily practiced in laboratory settings to construct novel parts from flowable feedstock materials. DIW printers are relatively expensive and often depend on custom software to print a part, limiting user-specificity. There have been recent advancements in multi-material and functionally graded DIW, but the systems are highly custom and the methods used to achieve multi-material prints are openly available to the public. The following article outlines the construction and operation method of a DIW system that is capable of printing that can produce compositionally-graded components using a dual feed progressive cavity pump extruder equipped with a dynamic mixer. The extruder and its capabilities to vary material composition while printing are demonstrated using a Prusa i3 MK3S+ desktop fused filament fabrication printer as the gantry system. This provides users ease of operation, and the capability of further tailoring to specific needs.

A practical adaptive moving-mesh algorithm for solving unconfined seepage problem with Galerkin finite element method.

Project description:One of the great challenges of unconfined seepage through a dam lies in the accurate determination of free surface that depends on the complexity of the seepage model, especially if the model is characterized with complex geometry and sharp variations in permeability distribution. This study presents a practical methodology that combines the adaptive moving-mesh algorithm and the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) to solve an unconfined seepage problem with high efficiency and precision. The methodology employs a set of improvement terms, such as remainder factor, step-size parameter and termination condition, all of which guarantee that the simulation and the refinement fitting can be implemented efficiently until the free surface converges within a given allowable error. In particular, a specialized discussion is presented for the significant relation between the location of the exit point and the corresponding grid fineness. To validate the practicability of the proposed method, a series of examples are performed. Comparing the result with those of other numerical approaches, we conclude that even though the unconfined seepage model may be complicated with arbitrary complex geometry and sharp variations in permeability distribution, the proposed algorithm provides a great improvement in efficiency and accuracy in free-surface searching.

Mesh-based Monte Carlo method in time-domain widefield fluorescence molecular tomography.

Project description:We evaluated the potential of mesh-based Monte Carlo (MC) method for widefield time-gated fluorescence molecular tomography, aiming to improve accuracy in both shape discretization and photon transport modeling in preclinical settings. An optimized software platform was developed utilizing multithreading and distributed parallel computing to achieve efficient calculation. We validated the proposed algorithm and software by both simulations and in vivo studies. The results establish that the optimized mesh-based Monte Carlo (mMC) method is a computationally efficient solution for optical tomography studies in terms of both calculation time and memory utilization. The open source code, as part of a new release of mMC, is publicly available at http://mcx.sourceforge.net/mmc/.

Designing functionally graded materials with superior load-bearing properties.

Project description:Ceramic prostheses often fail from fracture and wear. We hypothesize that these failures may be substantially mitigated by an appropriate grading of elastic modulus at the ceramic surface. In this study, we elucidate the effect of elastic modulus profile on the flexural damage resistance of functionally graded materials (FGMs), providing theoretical guidelines for designing FGMs with superior load-bearing property. The Young's modulus of the graded structure is assumed to vary in a power-law relation with a scaling exponent n; this is in accordance with experimental observations from our laboratory and elsewhere. Based on the theory for bending of graded beams, we examine the effect of n value and bulk-to-surface modulus ratio (E(b)/E(s)) on stress distribution through the graded layer. Theory predicts that a low exponent (0.15<n<0.5), coupled with a relatively small modulus ratio (3<E(b)/E(s)<6), is most desirable for reducing the maximum stress and transferring it into the interior, while keeping the surface stress low. Experimentally, we demonstrate that elastically graded materials with various n values and E(b)/E(s) ratios can be fabricated by infiltrating alumina and zirconia with a low-modulus glass. Flexural tests show that graded alumina and zirconia with suitable values of these parameters exhibit superior load-bearing capacity, 20-50% higher than their homogeneous counterparts. Improving load-bearing capacity of ceramic materials could have broad impacts on biomedical, civil, structural, and an array of other engineering applications.

Fabrication of a Functionally Graded Copper-Zinc Sulfide Phosphor.

Project description:Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are compositionally gradient materials. They can achieve the controlled distribution of the desired characteristics within the same bulk material. We describe a functionally graded (FG) metal-phosphor adapting the concept of the FGM; copper (Cu) is selected as a metal and Cu- and Cl-doped ZnS (ZnS:Cu,Cl) is selected as a phosphor and FG [Cu]-[ZnS:Cu,Cl] is fabricated by a very simple powder process. The FG [Cu]-[ZnS:Cu,Cl] reveals a dual-structured functional material composed of dense Cu and porous ZnS:Cu,Cl, which is completely combined through six graded mediating layers. The photoluminescence (PL) of FG [Cu]-[ZnS:Cu,Cl] is insensitive to temperature change. FG [Cu]-[ZnS:Cu,Cl] also exhibits diode characteristics and photo reactivity for 365?nm -UV light. Our FG metal-phosphor concept can pave the way to simplified manufacturing of low-cost and can be applied to various electronic devices.

Bamboo-inspired optimal design for functionally graded hollow cylinders.

Project description:The optimal distribution of the reinforcing fibers for stiffening hollow cylindrical composites is explored using the linear elasticity theory. The spatial distribution of the vascular bundles in wild bamboo, a nature-designed functionally graded material, is the basis for the design. Our results suggest that wild bamboos maximize their flexural rigidity by optimally regulating the radial gradation of their vascular bundle distribution. This fact provides us with a plant-mimetic design principle that enables the realization of high-stiffness and lightweight cylindrical composites.

Three-dimensional printing of functionally graded liquid crystal elastomer.

Project description:As a promising actuating material, liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) has been intensively explored in building diverse active structures and devices. Recently, direct ink writing technique has been developed to print LCE structures with various geometries and actuation behaviors. Despite the advancement in printing LCE, it remains challenging to print three-dimensional (3D) LCE structures with graded properties. Here, we report a facile method to tailor both the actuation behavior and mechanical properties of printed LCE filaments by varying printing parameters. On the basis of the comprehensive processing-structure-property relationship, we propose a simple strategy to print functionally graded LCEs, which greatly increases the design space for creating active morphing structures. We further demonstrate mitigation of stress concentration near the interface between an actuatable LCE tube and a rigid glass plate through gradient printing. The strategy developed here will facilitate potential applications of LCEs in different fields.

Shaping plasmon beams via the controlled illumination of finite-size plasmonic crystals.

Project description:Plasmonic crystals provide many passive and active optical functionalities, including enhanced sensing, optical nonlinearities, light extraction from LEDs and coupling to and from subwavelength waveguides. Here we study, both experimentally and numerically, the coherent control of SPP beam excitation in finite size plasmonic crystals under focussed illumination. The correct combination of the illuminating spot size, its position relative to the plasmonic crystal, wavelength and polarisation enables the efficient shaping and directionality of SPP beam launching. We show that under strongly focussed illumination, the illuminated part of the crystal acts as an antenna, launching surface plasmon waves which are subsequently filtered by the surrounding periodic lattice. Changing the illumination conditions provides rich opportunities to engineer the SPP emission pattern. This offers an alternative technique to actively modulate and control plasmonic signals, either via micro- and nano-electromechanical switches or with electro- and all-optical beam steering which have direct implications for the development of new integrated nanophotonic devices, such as plasmonic couplers and switches and on-chip signal demultiplexing. This approach can be generalised to all kinds of surface waves, either for the coupling and discrimination of light in planar dielectric waveguides or the generation and control of non-diffractive SPP beams.
