An Insight into Ionic Conductivity of Polyaniline Thin Films.

ABSTRACT: The work addresses an issue of the conductivity phenomenon in conductive polymer thin films. Polyaniline was chosen as a broadly used and thoroughly investigated conductive polymer in order to test and show capabilities of the developed original approach based on impedance spectra analysis. A number of films of different thickness were deposited onto a Pt electrode surface and consequently investigated in aqueous solution containing perchloric acid as an electrolyte. The processes that occur in polyaniline film were studied by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical quartz crystal microgravimetry (EQCM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The role of incorporated ions as charge carriers was investigated with respect to the control of the conductivity properties of the film. Along with detailed polyaniline behavior study, the work makes up a fundamental scientific impact on theoretical electrochemistry and electroanalytical techniques.

Oxidative chemical vapor deposition of polyaniline thin films.

Project description:Polyaniline (PANI) is synthesized via oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) using aniline as monomer and antimony pentachloride as oxidant. Microscopy and spectroscopy indicate that oCVD processing conditions influence the PANI film chemistry, oxidation, and doping level. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that a substrate temperature of 90 °C is needed to minimize the formation of oligomers during polymerization. Lower substrate temperatures, such as 25 °C, lead to a film that mostly includes oligomers. Increasing the oxidant flowrate to nearly match the monomer flowrate favors the deposition of PANI in the emeraldine state, and varying the oxidant flowrate can directly influence the oxidation state of PANI. Changing the reactor pressure from 700 to 35 mTorr does not have a significant effect on the deposited film chemistry, indicating that the oCVD PANI process is not concentration dependent. This work shows that oCVD can be used for depositing PANI and for effectively controlling the chemical state of PANI.

Capacitance of thin films containing polymerized ionic liquids.

Project description:Electrode-polymer interfaces dictate many of the properties of thin films such as capacitance, the electric field experienced by polymers, and charge transport. However, structure and dynamics of charged polymers near electrodes remain poorly understood, especially in the high concentration limit representative of the melts. To develop an understanding of electric field–induced transformations of electrode-polymer interfaces, we have studied electrified interfaces of an imidazolium-based polymerized ionic liquid (PolyIL) using combinations of broadband dielectric spectroscopy, specular neutron reflectivity, and simulations based on the Rayleigh’s dissipation function formalism. Overall, we obtained the camel-shaped dependence of the capacitance on applied voltage, which originated from the responses of an adsorbed polymer layer to applied voltages. This work provides additional insights related to the effects of molecular weight in affecting structure and properties of electrode-polymer interfaces, which are essential for designing next-generation energy storage and harvesting devices.

Ionic conductivity of melt-frozen LiBH<sub>4</sub> films.

Project description:The fast Li conductivity of LiBH4 envisages its use in all-solid-state batteries. Powders are commonly applied. But here, we study the formation of dense micrometer films by melting, spinning and subsequent solidifying. Characterized by electron microscopy, and spectroscopy (EDX/XPS/impedance), a reversible phase transformation is confirmed as well as a maximum conductivity of 103 S cm-1.

Microwave a.c. conductivity of domain walls in ferroelectric thin films.

Project description:Ferroelectric domain walls are of great interest as elementary building blocks for future electronic devices due to their intrinsic few-nanometre width, multifunctional properties and field-controlled topology. To realize the electronic functions, domain walls are required to be electrically conducting and addressable non-destructively. However, these properties have been elusive because conducting walls have to be electrically charged, which makes them unstable and uncommon in ferroelectric materials. Here we reveal that spontaneous and recorded domain walls in thin films of lead zirconate and bismuth ferrite exhibit large conductance at microwave frequencies despite being insulating at d.c. We explain this effect by morphological roughening of the walls and local charges induced by disorder with the overall charge neutrality. a.c. conduction is immune to large contact resistance enabling completely non-destructive walls read-out. This demonstrates a technological potential for harnessing a.c. conduction for oxide electronics and other materials with poor d.c. conduction, particularly at the nanoscale.

Effects of Microstructure on Electrochemical Reactivity and Conductivity in Nanostructured Ceria Thin Films.

Project description:The proton conductivity in functional oxides is crucial in determining electrochemistry and transport phenomena in a number of applications such as catalytic devices and fuel cells. However, single characterization techniques are usually limited in detecting the ionic dynamics at the full range of environmental conditions. In this report, we probe and uncover the links between the microstructure of nanostructured ceria (NC) and parameters that govern its electrochemical reaction and proton transport, by coupling experimental data obtained with time-resolved Kelvin probe force microscopy (tr-KPFM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and finite element analysis. It is found that surface morphology determines the water splitting rate and proton conductivity at 25 °C and wet conditions, where protons are mainly generated and transported within surface physisorbed water layers. However, at higher temperature (i.e., ≥125 °C) and dry conditions, when physisorbed water evaporates, grain size and crystallographic orientation become significant factors. Specifically, the proton generation rate is negatively correlated with the grain size, whereas proton diffusivity is facilitated by surface {111} planes and additional conduction pathways offered by cracks and open pores connected to the surface.

Ionic Conductivity and Structure of Chitosan Films Modified with Lactic Acid-Choline Chloride NADES.

Project description:The natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) based on choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LA) was used for the preparation of chitosan (CS) films by the solution casting method. The content of NADES in films was from 0 to 82 wt%. The impact of NADES on the morphology and crystalline structure of films was investigated using scanning electron microscopy as well as wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering. The experimental results allow to propose CS chains swelling in NADES. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the interactions between CS and NADES components via the formation of hydrogen and ion bonds. The thermal properties of the composite films were studied by simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. Thermomechanical analysis demonstrated appearance of two transitions at temperatures between -23 and -5 °C and 54-102 °C depending on NADES content. It was found that electrical conductivity of film with 82 wt% of NADES reaches 1.7 mS/cm. The influence of the composition and structure of films on the charge carriers concentration and their mobility is discussed.

Modifying the thermal conductivity of small molecule organic semiconductor thin films with metal nanoparticles.

Project description:Thermal properties of organic semiconductors play a significant role in the performance and lifetime of organic electronic devices, especially for scaled-up large area applications. Here we employ silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to modify the thermal conductivity of the small molecule organic semiconductor, dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT). The differential 3-? method was used to measure the thermal conductivity of Ag-DNTT hybrid thin films. We find that the thermal conductivity of pure DNTT thin films do not vary with the deposition temperature over a range spanning 24?°C to 80?°C. The thermal conductivity of the Ag-DNTT hybrid thin film initially decreases and then increases when the Ag volume fraction increases from 0% to 32%. By applying the effective medium approximation to fit the experimental results of thermal conductivity, the extracted thermal boundary resistance of the Ag-DNTT interface is 1.14?±?0.98?×?10(-7)?m(2)-K/W. Finite element simulations of thermal conductivity for realistic film morphologies show good agreement with experimental results and effective medium approximations.

Experimental Control and Statistical Analysis of Thermal Conductivity in ZnO-Benzene Multilayer Thin Films.

Project description:We have fabricated a model system of precisely layer-engineered inorganic-organic thin-film structures using atomic/molecular-layer deposition (ALD/MLD). The samples consist of nanoscale polycrystalline ZnO layers and intervening benzene layers, covering a broad range of layer sequences. The samples characterized in this study combined with previous publications provide an excellent sample set to examine thermal transport properties in inorganic-organic thin films. The cross-plane thermal conductivity is found to depend on multiple factors, with the inorganic-organic interface density being the dominating factor. Our work highlights the remarkable capability of interface engineering in suppressing the thermal conductivity of hybrid inorganic-organic materials, e.g., for thermoelectric applications.

Optical conductivity and superconductivity in highly overdoped La2-x Ca x CuO4 thin films.

Project description:We have used atomic layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy to grow epitaxial thin films of [Formula: see text] with x up to 0.5, greatly exceeding the solubility limit of Ca in bulk systems ([Formula: see text]). A comparison of the optical conductivity measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry to prior predictions from dynamical mean-field theory demonstrates that the hole concentration p is approximately equal to x. We find superconductivity with [Formula: see text] of 15 to 20 K up to the highest doping levels and attribute the unusual stability of superconductivity in [Formula: see text] to the nearly identical radii of La and Ca ions, which minimizes the impact of structural disorder. We conclude that careful disorder management can greatly extend the "superconducting dome" in the phase diagram of the cuprates.
