Expressing uncertainty in Human-Robot interaction.

ABSTRACT: Most people struggle to understand probability which is an issue for Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) researchers who need to communicate risks and uncertainties to the participants in their studies, the media and policy makers. Previous work showed that even the use of numerical values to express probabilities does not guarantee an accurate understanding by laypeople. We therefore investigate if words can be used to communicate probability, such as "likely" and "almost certainly not". We embedded these phrases in the context of the usage of autonomous vehicles. The results show that the association of phrases to percentages is not random and there is a preferred order of phrases. The association is, however, not as consistent as hoped for. Hence, it would be advisable to complement the use of words with numerical expression of uncertainty. This study provides an empirically verified list of probabilities phrases that HRI researchers can use to complement the numerical values.

Robot Gaze Behavior Affects Honesty in Human-Robot Interaction.

Project description:As the use of humanoid robots proliferates, an increasing amount of people may find themselves face-to-"face" with a robot in everyday life. Although there is a plethora of information available on facial social cues and how we interpret them in the field of human-human social interaction, we cannot assume that these findings flawlessly transfer to human-robot interaction. Therefore, more research on facial cues in human-robot interaction is required. This study investigated deception in human-robot interaction context, focusing on the effect that eye contact with a robot has on honesty toward this robot. In an iterative task, participants could assist a humanoid robot by providing it with correct information, or potentially secure a reward for themselves by providing it with incorrect information. Results show that participants are increasingly honest after the robot establishes eye contact with them, but only if this is in response to deceptive behavior. Behavior is not influenced by the establishment of eye contact if the participant is actively engaging in honest behavior. These findings support the notion that humanoid robots can be perceived as, and treated like, social agents, since the herein described effect mirrors one present in human-human social interaction.

A robot for overground physical human-robot interaction experiments.

Project description:Many anticipated physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) applications in the near future are overground tasks such as walking assistance. For investigating the biomechanics of human movement during pHRI, this work presents Ophrie, a novel interactive robot dedicated for physical interaction tasks with a human in overground settings. Unique design requirements for pHRI were considered in implementing the one-arm mobile robot, such as the low output impedance and the ability to apply small interaction forces. The robot can measure the human arm stiffness, an important physical quantity that can reveal human biomechanics during overground pHRI, while the human walks alongside the robot. This robot is anticipated to enable novel pHRI experiments and advance our understanding of intuitive and effective overground pHRI.

A Systematic Review of Human and Robot Personality in Health Care Human-Robot Interaction.

Project description:Robots have become vital to the delivery of health care and their personalities are often important to understanding their effectiveness as health care providers. Despite this, there is a lack of a systematic overarching understanding of personality in health care human-robot interaction. This makes it difficult to understand what we know and do not know about the impact of personality in health care human-robot interaction (H-HRI). As a result, our understanding of personality in H-HRI has not kept pace with the deployment of robots in various health care environments. To address this, the authors conducted a literature review that identified 18 studies on personality in H-HRI. This paper expands, refines, and further explicates the systematic review done in a conference proceedings [see: Esterwood (Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Human-Agent Interaction, 2020, 87-95)]. Review results: 1) highlight major thematic research areas, 2) derive and present major conclusions from the literature, 3) identify gaps in the literature, and 4) offer guidance for future H-HRI researchers. Overall, this paper represents a reflection on the existing literature and provides an important starting point for future research on personality in H-HRI.

Spatial Calibration of Humanoid Robot Flexible Tactile Skin for Human-Robot Interaction.

Project description:Recent developments in robotics have enabled humanoid robots to be used in tasks where they have to physically interact with humans, including robot-supported caregiving. This interaction-referred to as physical human-robot interaction (pHRI)-requires physical contact between the robot and the human body; one way to improve this is to use efficient sensing methods for the physical contact. In this paper, we use a flexible tactile sensing array and integrate it as a tactile skin for the humanoid robot HRP-4C. As the sensor can take any shape due to its flexible property, a particular focus is given on its spatial calibration, i.e., the determination of the locations of the sensor cells and their normals when attached to the robot. For this purpose, a novel method of spatial calibration using B-spline surfaces has been developed. We demonstrate with two methods that this calibration method gives a good approximation of the sensor position and show that our flexible tactile sensor can be fully integrated on a robot and used as input for robot control tasks. These contributions are a first step toward the use of flexible tactile sensors in pHRI applications.

Adaptation and Transfer of Robot Motion Policies for Close Proximity Human-Robot Interaction.

Project description:In the context of human-robot collaboration in close proximity, safety and comfort are the two important aspects to achieve joint tasks efficiently. For safety, the robot must be able to avoid dynamic obstacles such as a human arm with high reliability. For comfort, the trajectories and avoidance behavior of the robot need to be predictable to the humans. Moreover, these two aspects might be different from person to person or from one task to another. This work presents a framework to generate predictable motions with dynamic obstacle avoidance for the robot interacting with the human by using policy improvement method. The trajectories are generated using Dynamic Motion Primitives with an additional potential field term that penalizes trajectories that may lead to collisions with obstacles. Furthermore, human movements are predicted using a data-driven approach for proactive avoidance. A cost function is defined which measures different aspects that affect the comfort and predictability of human co-workers (e.g., human response time, joint jerk). This cost function is then minimized during human-robot interaction by the means of policy improvement through black-box optimization to generate robot trajectories that adapt to human preferences and avoid obstacles. User studies are performed to evaluate the trust and comfort of human co-workers when working with the robot. In addition, the studies are also extended to various scenarios and different users to analyze the task transferability. This improves the learning performance when switching to a new task or the robot has to adapt to a different co-worker.

Improving Haptic Response for Contextual Human Robot Interaction.

Project description:For haptic interaction, a user in a virtual environment needs to interact with proxies attached to a robot. The device must be at the exact location defined in the virtual environment in time. However, due to device limitations, delays are always unavoidable. One of the solutions to improve the device response is to infer human intended motion and move the robot at the earliest time possible to the desired goal. This paper presents an experimental study to improve the prediction time and reduce the robot time taken to reach the desired position. We developed motion strategies based on the hand motion and eye-gaze direction to determine the point of user interaction in a virtual environment. To assess the performance of the strategies, we conducted a subject-based experiment using an exergame for reach and grab tasks designed for upper limb rehabilitation training. The experimental results in this study revealed that eye-gaze-based prediction significantly improved the detection time by 37% and the robot time taken to reach the target by 27%. Further analysis provided more insight on the effect of the eye-gaze window and the hand threshold on the device response for the experimental task.

Human mobile robot interaction in the retail environment.

Project description:As technology advances, Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is boosting overall system efficiency and productivity. However, allowing robots to be present closely with humans will inevitably put higher demands on precise human motion tracking and prediction. Datasets that contain both humans and robots operating in the shared space are receiving growing attention as they may facilitate a variety of robotics and human-systems research. Datasets that track HRI with rich information other than video images during daily activities are rarely seen. In this paper, we introduce a novel dataset that focuses on social navigation between humans and robots in a future-oriented Wholesale and Retail Trade (WRT) environment ( https://uf-retail-cobot-dataset.github.io/ ). Eight participants performed the tasks that are commonly undertaken by consumers and retail workers. More than 260 minutes of data were collected, including robot and human trajectories, human full-body motion capture, eye gaze directions, and other contextual information. Comprehensive descriptions of each category of data stream, as well as potential use cases are included. Furthermore, analysis with multiple data sources and future directions are discussed.

Bio-Inspired Vision and Gesture-Based Robot-Robot Interaction for Human-Cooperative Package Delivery.

Project description:This research presents a novel bio-inspired framework for two robots interacting together for a cooperative package delivery task with a human-in the-loop. It contributes to eliminating the need for network-based robot-robot interaction in constrained environments. An individual robot is instructed to move in specific shapes with a particular orientation at a certain speed for the other robot to infer using object detection (custom YOLOv4) and depth perception. The shape is identified by calculating the area occupied by the detected polygonal route. A metric for the area's extent is calculated and empirically used to assign regions for specific shapes and gives an overall accuracy of 93.3% in simulations and 90% in a physical setup. Additionally, gestures are analyzed for their accuracy of intended direction, distance, and the target coordinates in the map. The system gives an average positional RMSE of 0.349 in simulation and 0.461 in a physical experiment. A video demonstration of the problem statement along with the simulations and experiments for real world applications has been given here and in Supplementary Material.

Face mediated human-robot interaction for remote medical examination.

Project description:Realtime visual feedback from consequences of actions is useful for future safety-critical human-robot interaction applications such as remote physical examination of patients. Given multiple formats to present visual feedback, using face as feedback for mediating human-robot interaction in remote examination remains understudied. Here we describe a face mediated human-robot interaction approach for remote palpation. It builds upon a robodoctor-robopatient platform where user can palpate on the robopatient to remotely control the robodoctor to diagnose a patient. A tactile sensor array mounted on the end effector of the robodoctor measures the haptic response of the patient under diagnosis and transfers it to the robopatient to render pain facial expressions in response to palpation forces. We compare this approach against a direct presentation of tactile sensor data in a visual tactile map. As feedback, the former has the advantage of recruiting advanced human capabilities to decode expressions on a human face whereas the later has the advantage of being able to present details such as intensity and spatial information of palpation. In a user study, we compare these two approaches in a teleoperated palpation task to find the hard nodule embedded in the remote abdominal phantom. We show that the face mediated human-robot interaction approach leads to statistically significant improvements in localizing the hard nodule without compromising the nodule position estimation time. We highlight the inherent power of facial expressions as communicative signals to enhance the utility and effectiveness of human-robot interaction in remote medical examinations.

Ghost-in-the-Machine reveals human social signals for human-robot interaction.

Project description:We used a new method called "Ghost-in-the-Machine" (GiM) to investigate social interactions with a robotic bartender taking orders for drinks and serving them. Using the GiM paradigm allowed us to identify how human participants recognize the intentions of customers on the basis of the output of the robotic recognizers. Specifically, we measured which recognizer modalities (e.g., speech, the distance to the bar) were relevant at different stages of the interaction. This provided insights into human social behavior necessary for the development of socially competent robots. When initiating the drink-order interaction, the most important recognizers were those based on computer vision. When drink orders were being placed, however, the most important information source was the speech recognition. Interestingly, the participants used only a subset of the available information, focussing only on a few relevant recognizers while ignoring others. This reduced the risk of acting on erroneous sensor data and enabled them to complete service interactions more swiftly than a robot using all available sensor data. We also investigated socially appropriate response strategies. In their responses, the participants preferred to use the same modality as the customer's requests, e.g., they tended to respond verbally to verbal requests. Also, they added redundancy to their responses, for instance by using echo questions. We argue that incorporating the social strategies discovered with the GiM paradigm in multimodal grammars of human-robot interactions improves the robustness and the ease-of-use of these interactions, and therefore provides a smoother user experience.
