Dynamics of splashed droplets impacting wheat leaves treated with a fungicide.

ABSTRACT: Wheat is threatened by diseases such as leaf rust. One significant mechanism of disease spread is the liberation and dispersal of rust spores due to rainsplash. However, it is unclear to what extent the spore-laden splashed droplets can transmit the disease to neighbouring leaves. Here, we show that splashed droplets either bounce or stick, depending on the orientation of the leaf and whether the surface of the leaf has been treated with a fungicide. A scaling model revealed that bouncing was enabled when the droplet's kinetic energy exceeded its pinning energy to the surface. Our findings indicate that, ironically, the application of fungicide to protect a wheat plant may also facilitate pathogen spread and infection by making leaves sticky to spore-laden droplets.

Dynamics of Droplets Impacting on Aerogel, Liquid Infused, and Liquid-Like Solid Surfaces.

Project description:Droplets impacting superhydrophobic surfaces have been extensively studied due to their compelling scientific insights and important industrial applications. In these cases, the commonly reported impact regime was that of complete rebound. This impact regime strongly depends on the nature of the superhydrophobic surface. Here, we report the dynamics of droplets impacting three hydrophobic slippery surfaces, which have fundamental differences in normal liquid adhesion and lateral static and kinetic liquid friction. For an air cushion-like (super)hydrophobic solid surface (Aerogel) with low adhesion and low static and low kinetic friction, complete rebound can start at a very low Weber (We) number (∼1). For slippery liquid-infused porous (SLIP) surfaces with high adhesion and low static and low kinetic friction, complete rebound only occurs at a much higher We number (>5). For a slippery omniphobic covalently attached liquid-like (SOCAL) solid surface, with high adhesion and low static friction similar to SLIPS but higher kinetic friction, complete rebound was not observed, even for a We as high as 200. Furthermore, the droplet ejection volume after impacting the Aerogel surface is 100% across the whole range of We numbers tested compared to other surfaces. In contrast, droplet ejection for SLIPs was only observed consistently when the We was above 5-10. For SOCAL, 100% (or near 100%) ejection volume was not observed even at the highest We number tested here (∼200). This suggests that droplets impacting our (super)hydrophobic Aerogel and SLIPS lose less kinetic energy. These insights into the differences between normal adhesion and lateral friction properties can be used to inform the selection of surface properties to achieve the most desirable droplet impact characteristics to fulfill a wide range of applications, such as deicing, inkjet printing, and microelectronics.

Seasonal epiphytic microbial dynamics on grapevine leaves under biocontrol and copper fungicide treatments.

Project description:Winemakers have long used copper as a conventional fungicide treatment on grapevine and only recently, the use of biocontrol agents depicted a promising alternative. Most of the studies that investigate the impact of fungicide treatments, focus on specific pathogenic microbes. In the present work instead, a field experiment conducted in South Africa shows the seasonal microbial change occurring on grapevine leaves, periodically treated with two different fungicide treatments: copper sulphate and Lactobacillus plantarum MW-1. In this work, NGS data were combined with strain-specific and community qPCRs to reveal the shift of the microbial communities throughout the growing season and highlight the impact of fungicides on the microbiota. Only the family of Lactobacillaceae systematically changed between treatments, while the bacterial community remained relatively stable over time. MW-1 was exclusively detected on biocontrol-sprayed leaves. Conversely, the fungal community was largely shaped by sampling time, underlining the succession of different dominant taxa over the months. Between treatments, only a few fungal taxa appeared to change significantly and the fungal load was also comparable. Monitoring the dynamics of the microbial community under different fungicide treatments may advise the best timing to apply treatments to the plants, toward the realization of more sustainable agricultural practices.

The Effect of Surface Roughness on the Contact Line and Splashing Dynamics of Impacting Droplets.

Project description:Whether a droplet splashes upon impact onto a solid is known to depend not only on the fluid properties and its speed, but also on the substrate characteristics. Past research has shown that splashing is heavily influenced by the substrate roughness. Indeed, in this manuscript, we demonstrate that splashing is ruled by the surface roughness, the splashing ratio, and the dynamic contact angle. Experiments consist of water and ethanol droplets impacting onto solid substrates with varying degrees of roughness. High speed imaging is used to extract the dynamic contact angle as a function of the spreading speed for these impacting droplets. During the spreading phase, the dynamic contact angle achieves an asymptotic maximum value, which depends on the substrate roughness and the liquid properties. We found that this maximum dynamic contact angle, together with the liquid properties, the ratio of the peak to peak roughness and the surface feature mean width, determines the splashing to no-splashing threshold. In addition, these parameters consistently differentiate the splashing behaviour of impacts onto smooth hydrophilic, hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces.

Morphing and vectoring impacting droplets by means of wettability-engineered surfaces.

Project description:Driven by its importance in nature and technology, droplet impact on solid surfaces has been studied for decades. To date, research on control of droplet impact outcome has focused on optimizing pre-impact parameters, e.g., droplet size and velocity. Here we follow a different, post-impact, surface engineering approach yielding controlled vectoring and morphing of droplets during and after impact. Surfaces with patterned domains of extreme wettability (high or low) are fabricated and implemented for controlling the impact process during and even after rebound--a previously neglected aspect of impact studies on non-wetting surfaces. For non-rebound cases, droplets can be morphed from spheres to complex shapes--without unwanted loss of liquid. The procedure relies on competition between surface tension and fluid inertial forces, and harnesses the naturally occurring contact-line pinning mechanisms at sharp wettability changes to create viable dry regions in the spread liquid volume. Utilizing the same forces central to morphing, we demonstrate the ability to rebound orthogonally-impacting droplets with an additional non-orthogonal velocity component. We theoretically analyze this capability and derive a We(-.25) dependence of the lateral restitution coefficient. This study offers wettability-engineered surfaces as a new approach to manipulate impacting droplet microvolumes, with ramifications for surface microfluidics and fluid-assisted templating applications.

Penetration and ligament formation of viscoelastic droplets impacting on the superhydrophobic mesh.

Project description:Spraying occurs by the impact of water droplets on the superhydrophobic wire meshes by liquid penetration during the spreading and recoiling. We have shown that adding a small amount of high molecular weight polymer (PEO) alters the ligaments formation and stabilizes them due to its high elasticity. Consequently, it suppresses droplet spray during droplet spreading and recoiling (recoil penetration). In the wide range of the impact velocities, the penetrated ligaments retracted back to the mesh after reaching the maximum length and eventually merged with the droplet on the mesh. The empirical fitting shows that the ligament evolution follows the parallel spring-dashpot model of Kelvin-Voigt. The additive polymer also changes the recoil penetration mechanisms from cavity collapse to cavity detachment due to the higher retraction velocity of the cavity near the mesh that is induced by the upward flow formed by the retraction of the ligaments to the mother droplet. A model based on mass conservation is proposed to calculate the variation of the maximum ligament size.

The vortex-driven dynamics of droplets within droplets.

Project description:Understanding the fluid-structure interaction is crucial for an optimal design and manufacturing of soft mesoscale materials. Multi-core emulsions are a class of soft fluids assembled from cluster configurations of deformable oil-water double droplets (cores), often employed as building-blocks for the realisation of devices of interest in bio-technology, such as drug-delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Here, we study the physics of multi-core emulsions flowing in microfluidic channels and report numerical evidence of a surprisingly rich variety of driven non-equilibrium states (NES), whose formation is caused by a dipolar fluid vortex triggered by the sheared structure of the flow carrier within the microchannel. The observed dynamic regimes range from long-lived NES at low core-area fraction, characterised by a planetary-like motion of the internal drops, to short-lived ones at high core-area fraction, in which a pre-chaotic motion results from multi-body collisions of inner drops, as combined with self-consistent hydrodynamic interactions. The onset of pre-chaotic behavior is marked by transitions of the cores from one vortex to another, a process that we interpret as manifestations of the system to maximize its entropy by filling voids, as they arise dynamically within the capsule.

Fungicide effects on fungal community composition in the wheat phyllosphere.

Project description:The fungicides used to control diseases in cereal production can have adverse effects on non-target fungi, with possible consequences for plant health and productivity. This study examined fungicide effects on fungal communities on winter wheat leaves in two areas of Sweden. High-throughput 454 sequencing of the fungal ITS2 region yielded 235 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) at the species level from the 18 fields studied. It was found that commonly used fungicides had moderate but significant effect on fungal community composition in the wheat phyllosphere. The relative abundance of several saprotrophs was altered by fungicide use, while the effect on common wheat pathogens was mixed. The fungal community on wheat leaves consisted mainly of basidiomycete yeasts, saprotrophic ascomycetes and plant pathogens. A core set of six fungal OTUs representing saprotrophic species was identified. These were present across all fields, although overall the difference in OTU richness was large between the two areas studied.

Coalescence Dynamics of Acoustically Levitated Droplets.

Project description:The contactless coalescence of a droplet is of paramount importance for physical and industrial applications. This paper describes a coalescence method to be used mid-air via acoustic levitation using an ultrasonic phased array system. Acoustic levitation using ultrasonic phased arrays provides promising lab-on-a-drop applications, such as transportation, coalescence, mixing, separation, evaporation, and extraction in a continuous operation. The mechanism of droplet coalescence in mid-air may be better understood by experimentally and numerically exploring the droplet dynamics immediately before the coalescence. In this study, water droplets were experimentally levitated, transported, and coalesced by controlled acoustic fields. We observed that the edges of droplets deformed and attracted each other immediately before the coalescence. Through image processing, the radii of curvature of the droplets were quantified and the pressure difference between the inside and outside a droplet was simulated to obtain the pressure and velocity information on the droplet's surface. The results revealed that the sound pressure acting on the droplet clearly decreased before the impact of the droplets. This pressure on the droplets was quantitatively analyzed from the experimental data. Our experimental and numerical results provide deeper physical insights into contactless droplet manipulation for futuristic lab-on-a-drop applications.

Dynamics and functions of lipid droplets.

Project description:Lipid droplets are storage organelles at the centre of lipid and energy homeostasis. They have a unique architecture consisting of a hydrophobic core of neutral lipids, which is enclosed by a phospholipid monolayer that is decorated by a specific set of proteins. Originating from the endoplasmic reticulum, lipid droplets can associate with most other cellular organelles through membrane contact sites. It is becoming apparent that these contacts between lipid droplets and other organelles are highly dynamic and coupled to the cycles of lipid droplet expansion and shrinkage. Importantly, lipid droplet biogenesis and degradation, as well as their interactions with other organelles, are tightly coupled to cellular metabolism and are critical to buffer the levels of toxic lipid species. Thus, lipid droplets facilitate the coordination and communication between different organelles and act as vital hubs of cellular metabolism.

Universal Transient Dynamics of Electrowetting Droplets.

Project description:Droplet spreading on substrates by electrowetting exhibits either of the two transient behaviours: one characterised by contact line oscillation, and the other one by slow spreading dynamics. The transition between these behaviours remains elusive due to the current limited understanding of the spreading dynamics on the hydrodynamical and electrical properties of electrowetting systems. To understand this transition we propose a model capturing the transition's occurrence based on both the hydrodynamical and electrical parameters. We derive the critical viscosity at which the transition occurs and reveal its subtle and often hidden dependence on the electrowetting dynamics. We find and experimentally verify that the condition for minimization of droplets' actuation time is only achieved at the transition. Particularly, the transition time as a function of damping ratio exhibits the general feature of Kramers' reaction-rate theory.
