Progressive censoring schemes for marshall-olkin pareto distribution with applications: Estimation and prediction.

Project description:In this paper two prediction methods are used to predict the non-observed (censored) units under progressive Type-II censored samples. The lifetimes of the units follow Marshall-Olkin Pareto distribution. We observe the posterior predictive density of the non-observed units and construct predictive intervals as well. Furthermore, we provide inference on the unknown parameters of the Marshall-Olkin model, so we observe point and interval estimation by using maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimation methods. Bayes estimation methods are obtained under quadratic loss function. EM algorithm is used to obtain numerical values of the Maximum likelihood method and Gibbs and the Monte Carlo Markov chain techniques are utilized for Bayesian calculations. A simulation study is performed to evaluate the performance of the estimators with respect to the mean square errors and the biases. Finally, we find the best prediction method by implementing a real data example under progressive Type-II censoring schemes.

Genome analysis with the conditional multinomial distribution profile.

Project description:The focus of the research is on the analysis of genome sequences. Based on the inter-nucleotide distance sequence, we propose the conditional multinomial distribution profile for the complete genomic sequence. These profiles can be used to define a very simple, computationally efficient, alignment-free, distance measure that reflects the evolutionary relationships between genomic sequences. We use this distance measure to classify chromosomes according to species of origin, to build the phylogenetic tree of 24 complete genome sequences of coronaviruses. Our results demonstrate the new method is powerful and efficient.

Estimation of the censoring distribution in clinical trials.

Project description:Clinical studies with time to event endpoints typically report the median follow-up (i.e., censoring) time for the subjects in the trial, alongside the median time to event. The reason for this is to provide information about the opportunity for subjects in the study to experience the event of interest (Betensky, 2015 [1]). The median follow-up time is often calculated from the Kaplan-Meier estimate for time to censoring. In most clinical studies, the censoring time is a composite measure, defined as the minimum of time to drop-out from the study and time to administrative end of study. The time to drop-out component may or may not be observed; it is observed only if drop-out occurs before the event and the end of the study. However, the time to end of study is observed for each subject, as it is the time from entry to the study to the calendar date that is administratively set as the end of the study. It is known even for subjects who have the event prior to the end of the study. This decomposition of the censoring time into a time that is itself potentially censored and a time that is fully observed raises the interesting question of whether estimation of the censoring distribution could be improved through a decoupling of these times. We demonstrate in simulations that consideration of censoring in this way yields reduced variability under some circumstances and should be used in practice. We illustrate these concepts through application to a meningioma study.

Overdispersion models for correlated multinomial data: Applications to blinding assessment.

Project description:Overdispersion models have been extensively studied for correlated normal and binomial data but much less so for correlated multinomial data. In this work, we describe a multinomial overdispersion model that leads to the specification of the first two moments of the outcome and allows the estimation of the global parameters using generalized estimating equations (GEE). We introduce a Global Blinding Index as a target parameter and illustrate the application of the GEE method to its estimation from (1) a clinical trial with clustering by practitioner and (2) a meta-analysis on psychiatric disorders. We examine the impact of a small number of clusters, high variability in cluster sizes, and the magnitude of the intraclass correlation on the performance of the GEE estimators of the Global Blinding Index using the data simulated from different models. We compare these estimators with the inverse-variance weighted estimators and a maximum-likelihood estimator, derived under the Dirichlet-multinomial model. Our results indicate that the performance of the GEE estimators was satisfactory even in situations with a small number of clusters, whereas the inverse-variance weighted estimators performed poorly, especially for larger values of the intraclass correlation coefficient. Our findings and illustrations may be instrumental for practitioners who analyze clustered multinomial data from clinical trials and/or meta-analysis.

An attribute control chart for a Weibull distribution under accelerated hybrid censoring.

Project description:In this article, an attribute control chart has been proposed using the accelerated hybrid censoring logic for the monitoring of defective items whose life follows a Weibull distribution. The product can be tested by introducing the acceleration factor based on different pressurized conditions such as stress, load, strain, temperature, etc. The control limits are derived based on the binomial distribution, but the fraction defective is expressed only through the shape parameter, the acceleration factor and the test duration constant. Tables of the average run lengths have been generated for different process parameters to assess the performance of the proposed control chart. Simulation studies have been performed for the practical use, where the proposed chart is compared with the Shewhart np chart for demonstration of the detection power of a process shift.

Pointwise confidence intervals for a survival distribution with small samples or heavy censoring.

Project description:We propose a beta product confidence procedure (BPCP) that is a non-parametric confidence procedure for the survival curve at a fixed time for right-censored data assuming independent censoring. In such situations, the Kaplan-Meier estimator is typically used with an asymptotic confidence interval (CI) that can have coverage problems when the number of observed failures is not large, and/or when testing the latter parts of the curve where there are few remaining subjects at risk. The BPCP guarantees central coverage (i.e. ensures that both one-sided error rates are no more than half of the total nominal rate) when there is no censoring (in which case it reduces to the Clopper-Pearson interval) or when there is progressive type II censoring (i.e. when censoring only occurs immediately after failures on fixed proportions of the remaining individuals). For general independent censoring, simulations show that the BPCP maintains central coverage in many situations where competing methods can have very substantial error rate inflation for the lower limit. The BPCP gives asymptotically correct coverage and is asymptotically equivalent to the CI on the Kaplan-Meier estimator using Greenwood's variance. The BPCP may be inverted to create confidence procedures for a quantile of the underlying survival distribution. Because the BPCP is easy to implement, offers protection in settings when other methods fail, and essentially matches other methods when they succeed, it should be the method of choice.

Modeling observations with a detection limit using a truncated normal distribution with censoring.

Project description:BackgroundWhen data are collected subject to a detection limit, observations below the detection limit may be considered censored. In addition, the domain of such observations may be restricted; for example, values may be required to be non-negative.MethodsWe propose a method for estimating population mean and variance from censored observations that accounts for known domain restriction. The method finds maximum likelihood estimates assuming an underlying truncated normal distribution.ResultsWe show that our method, tcensReg, has lower bias, Type I error rates, and mean squared error than other methods commonly used for data with detection limits such as Tobit regression and single imputation under a range of simulation settings from mild to heavy censoring and truncation. We further demonstrate the consistency of the maximum likelihood estimators. We apply our method to analyze vision quality data collected from ophthalmology clinical trials comparing different types of intraocular lenses implanted during cataract surgery. All of the methods yield similar conclusions regarding non-inferiority, but estimates from the tcensReg method suggest that there may be greater mean differences and overall variability.ConclusionsIn the presence of detection limits, our new method tcensReg provides a way to incorporate known domain restrictions in dependent variables that substantially improves inferences.

Statistical inferences for type-II hybrid censoring data from the alpha power exponential distribution.

Project description:This paper describes a method for computing estimates for the location parameter μ > 0 and scale parameter λ > 0 with fixed shape parameter α of the alpha power exponential distribution (APED) under type-II hybrid censored (T-IIHC) samples. We compute the maximum likelihood estimations (MLEs) of (μ, λ) by applying the Newton-Raphson method (NRM) and expectation maximization algorithm (EMA). In addition, the estimate hazard functions and reliability are evaluated by applying the invariance property of MLEs. We calculate the Fisher information matrix (FIM) by applying the missing information rule, which is important in finding the asymptotic confidence interval. Finally, the different proposed estimation methods are compared in simulation studies. A simulation example and real data example are analyzed to illustrate our estimation methods.

Inference for partially observed competing risks model for Kumaraswamy distribution under generalized progressive hybrid censoring.

Project description:In this paper, inference for a competing risks model is studied when latent failure times follow Kumaraswamy distribution and causes of failure are partially observed. Under generalized progressive hybrid censoring, existence and uniqueness of maximum likelihood estimators of model parameters are established. The confidence intervals are obtained by using asymptotic distribution theory. We further compute Bayes estimators along with credible intervals. In addition, inference is also discussed when there is order restricted shape parameters. The performance of all estimates is investigated using Monte-Carlo simulations. Finally, analysis of a real data set is presented for illustration purposes.

Multivariate recurrent events in the presence of multivariate informative censoring with applications to bleeding and transfusion events in myelodysplastic syndrome.

Project description:We propose a general novel class of joint models to analyze recurrent events that has a wide variety of applications. The focus in this article is to model the bleeding and transfusion events in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) studies, where patients may die or withdraw from the study early due to adverse events or other reasons, such as consent withdrawal or required alternative therapy during the study. The proposed model accommodates multiple recurrent events and multivariate informative censoring through a shared random-effects model. The random-effects model captures both within-subject and within-event dependence simultaneously. We construct the likelihood function for the semiparametric joint model and develop an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for inference. The computational burden does not increase with the number of types of recurrent events. We utilize the MDS clinical trial data to illustrate our proposed methodology. We also conduct a number of simulations to examine the performance of the proposed model.
