Project description:In this work, we establish a fractional-order neural field mathematical model with Caputo's fractional derivative temporal order α considering 0 < α < 2, to analyze the effect of fractional-order on cortical wave features observed preceding seizure termination. The importance of this incorporation relies on the theoretical framework established by fractional-order derivatives in which memory and hereditary properties of a system are considered. Employing Mittag-Leffler functions, we first obtain approximate fractional-order solutions that provide information about the initial wave dynamics in a fractional-order frame. We then consider the Adomian decomposition method to approximate pulse solutions in a wider range of orders and longer times. The former approach establishes a direct way to investigate the initial relationships between fractional-order and wave features, such as wave speed and wave width. In contrast, the latter approach displays wave propagation dynamics in different fractional orders for longer times. Using the previous two approaches, we establish approximate wave solutions with characteristics consistent with in vivo cortical waves preceding seizure termination. In our analysis, we find consistent differences in the initial effect of the fractional-order on the features of wave speed and wave width, depending on whether α <1 or α>1. Both cases can model the shape of cortical wave propagation for different fractional-orders at the cost of modifying the wave speed. Our results also show that the effect of fractional-order on wave width depends on the synaptic threshold and the synaptic connectivity extent. Fractional-order derivatives have been interpreted as the memory trace of the system. This property and the results of our analysis suggest that fractional-order derivatives and neuronal collective memory modify cortical wave features.

Project description:Different evolutionary algorithms (EAs), namely, particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), and PSO-GA hybrid optimization, have been used to optimize digital differential operators so that these can be better fitted to exemplify their new improved fractional order differentiator counterparts. First, the paper aims to provide efficient 2nd and 3rd order operators in connection with process of minimization of error fitness function by registering mean, median, and standard deviation values in different random iterations to ascertain the best results among them, using all the abovementioned EAs. Later, these optimized operators are discretized for half differentiator models for utilizing their restored qualities inhibited from their optimization. Simulation results present the comparisons of the proposed half differentiators with the existing and amongst different models based on 2nd and 3rd order optimized operators. Proposed half differentiators have been observed to approximate the ideal half differentiator and also outperform the existing ones reasonably well in complete range of Nyquist frequency.

Project description:Control and synchronization of fractional-order chaotic systems have attracted wide attention due to their numerous potential applications. To get suitable control method and parameters for fractional-order chaotic systems, the stability analysis of time-varying fractional-order systems should be discussed in the first place. Therefore, this paper analyzes the stability of the time-varying fractional-order systems and presents a stability theorem for the system with the order 0<α<1. This theorem is a sufficient condition which can discriminate the stability of time-varying systems conveniently. Feedback controllers are designed for control and synchronization of the fractional-order Lü chaotic system. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed theorem.

Project description:Variable-order fractional operators were conceived and mathematically formalized only in recent years. The possibility of formulating evolutionary governing equations has led to the successful application of these operators to the modelling of complex real-world problems ranging from mechanics, to transport processes, to control theory, to biology. Variable-order fractional calculus (VO-FC) is a relatively less known branch of calculus that offers remarkable opportunities to simulate interdisciplinary processes. Recognizing this untapped potential, the scientific community has been intensively exploring applications of VO-FC to the modelling of engineering and physical systems. This review is intended to serve as a starting point for the reader interested in approaching this fascinating field. We provide a concise and comprehensive summary of the progress made in the development of VO-FC analytical and computational methods with application to the simulation of complex physical systems. More specifically, following a short introduction of the fundamental mathematical concepts, we present the topic of VO-FC from the point of view of practical applications in the context of scientific modelling.

Project description:The mechanisms of atrial fibrillation (AF) are a challenging research topic. The rotor hypothesis states that the AF is sustained by a reentrant wave that propagates around an unexcited core. Cardiac tissue heterogeneities, both structural and cellular, play an important role during fibrillatory dynamics, so that the ionic characteristics of the currents, their spatial distribution and their structural heterogeneity determine the meandering of the rotor. Several studies about rotor dynamics implement the standard diffusion equation. However, this mathematical scheme carries some limitations. It assumes the myocardium as a continuous medium, ignoring, therefore, its discrete and heterogeneous aspects. A computational model integrating both, electrical and structural properties could complement experimental and clinical results. A new mathematical model of the action potential propagation, based on complex fractional order derivatives is presented. The complex derivative order appears of considering the myocardium as discrete-scale invariant fractal. The main aim is to study the role of a myocardial, with fractal characteristics, on atrial fibrillatory dynamics. For this purpose, the degree of structural heterogeneity is described through derivatives of complex order ? = ? + j?. A set of variations for ? is tested. The real part ? takes values ranging from 1.1 to 2 and the imaginary part ? from 0 to 0.28. Under this scheme, the standard diffusion is recovered when ? = 2 and ? = 0. The effect of ? on the action potential propagation over an atrial strand is investigated. Rotors are generated in a 2D model of atrial tissue under electrical remodeling due to chronic AF. The results show that the degree of structural heterogeneity, given by ?, modulates the electrophysiological properties and the dynamics of rotor-type reentrant mechanisms. The spatial stability of the rotor and the area of its unexcited core are modulated. As the real part decreases and the imaginary part increases, simulating a higher structural heterogeneity, the vulnerable window to reentrant is increased, as the total meandering of the rotor tip. This in silico study suggests that structural heterogeneity, described by means of complex order derivatives, modulates the stability of rotors and that a wide range of rotor dynamics can be generated.

Project description:Fractional derivative has a history as long as that of classical calculus, but it is much less popular than it should be. What is the physical meaning of fractional derivative? This is still an open problem. In modeling various memory phenomena, we observe that a memory process usually consists of two stages. One is short with permanent retention, and the other is governed by a simple model of fractional derivative. With the numerical least square method, we show that the fractional model perfectly fits the test data of memory phenomena in different disciplines, not only in mechanics, but also in biology and psychology. Based on this model, we find that a physical meaning of the fractional order is an index of memory.

Project description:This study presents a generalized elastodynamic theory, based on fractional-order operators, capable of modelling the propagation of elastic waves in non-local attenuating solids and across complex non-local interfaces. Classical elastodynamics cannot capture hybrid field transport processes that are characterized by simultaneous propagation and diffusion. The proposed continuum mechanics formulation, which combines fractional operators in both time and space, offers unparalleled capabilities to predict the most diverse combinations of multiscale, non-local, dissipative and attenuating elastic energy transport mechanisms. Despite the many features of this theory and the broad range of applications, this work focuses on the behaviour and modelling capabilities of the space-fractional term and on its effect on the elastodynamics of solids. We also derive a generalized fractional-order version of Snell's Law of refraction and of the corresponding Fresnel's coefficients. This formulation allows predicting the behaviour of fully coupled elastic waves interacting with non-local interfaces. The theoretical results are validated via direct numerical simulations.

Project description:ObjectiveLiver cirrhosis, which is considered as the terminal stage of liver diseases, has become life-threatening among non-communicable diseases in the world. Viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and C) is the major risk factor for the development and progression of chronic liver cirrhosis. The asymptomatic stage of cirrhosis is considered as the compensated cirrhosis whereas the symptomatic stage is considered as decompensated cirrhosis. The latter stage is characterized by complex disorder affecting multiple systems of liver organ with frequent hospitalization. In this paper, we formulate system of fractional differential equations of chronic liver cirrhosis with frequent hospitalization to investigate the dynamics of the disease. The fundamental properties including the existence of positive solutions, positively invariant set, and biological feasibility are discussed. We used generalized mean value theorem to establish the existence of positive solutions. The Adams-type predictor-evaluate-corrector-evaluate approach is used to present the numerical scheme the fractional erder model.ResultsUsing the numerical scheme, we simulate the solutions of the fractional order model. The numerical simulations are carried out using MATLAB software to illustrate the analytic findings. The analysis reveals that the number of decompensated cirrhosis individuals decreases when the progression rate and the disease's past states are considered.
