Photocatalytic Performance and Mechanism Research of Ag/HSTiO2 on Degradation of Methyl Orange.

ABSTRACT: The Sol-gel method is successfully used to prepare high specific surface area TiO2 (HSTiO2). Then, the photodeposition method is used to composite silver particles with HSTiO2. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and UV-vis spectroscopy are used to characterize the Ag/HSTiO2 nanocomposites. It can be concluded that the prepared TiO2 has a large specific surface area, reaching 125.5 m2 g-1. Additionally, the addition of silver particles successfully broadens the photoresponse range from the UV region to the visible light region. In order to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of Ag/HSTiO2, we conducted the methyl orange degradation test. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of the sample is significantly higher than that of pure TiO2.

Project description:Highly dispersed ZnO/g-C3N4 composites with different doping ratios of g-C3N4 were prepared by a hydrothermal method. The preparation method is simple and the energy consumption is low. The composite samples were used to degradate the methyl orange solution. They all showed excellent photocatalytic activity and cycling stability. The optimal loading content of g-C3N4 was investigated, and the mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity was studied in detail. This study provides a promising photocatalytic material for the removal of organic pollutants.

Magnetic field effect on the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange by commercial TiO2 powder.

Project description:In this work, by taking commercial P25 hydrophilic titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst, the magnetic field effect (MFE) on the photodegradation rate of methyl orange is studied. It is found that a relatively lower magnetic field B = 0.28 T can efficiently enhance the photodegradation efficiency of commercial TiO2 by 24%. However, the photodegradation efficiency of commercial TiO2 will be suppressed slightly by 7% under a magnetic field of 0.5 T. Moreover, such MFE on the photocatalyst is dependent on the settling state of the reaction solution. Additional experiments on the degradation of other pollutants (methylene blue) and with other photocatalysts (g-C3N4) indicate that the MFE is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the photocatalytic degradation process. These observations suggest that the magnetic field can be taken as an efficient strategy to regulate the catalytic process of commercial catalysts and improve the catalytic efficiency.

High performance photocatalyst TiO2@UiO-66 applied to degradation of methyl orange.

Project description:MOFs have considerable adsorption capacity due to their huge specific surface area. They have the characteristics of photocatalysts for their organic ligands can absorb photons and produce electrons. In this paper, the photodegradation properties of TiO2 composites loaded with UiO-66 were investigated for the first time for MO. A series of TiO2@UiO-66 composites with different contents of TiO2 were prepared by a solvothermal method. The photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) was performed using a high-pressure mercury lamp as the UV light source. The effects of TiO2 loading, catalyst dosage, pH value, and MO concentration were investigated. The results showed that the degradation of MO by TiO2@UiO-66 could reach 97.59% with the addition of only a small amount of TiO2 (5 wt%). TiO2@UiO-66 exhibited significantly enhanced photoelectron transfer capability and inhibited efficient electron-hole recombination compared to pure TiO2 in MO degradation. The composite catalyst indicated good stability and reusability when they were recycled three times, and the photocatalytic reaction efficiencies were 92.54%, 88.76%, and 86.90%. The results provide a new option to design stable, high-efficiency MOF-based photocatalysts.

Development of Ag0.04ZrO2/rGO heterojunction, as an efficient visible light photocatalyst for degradation of methyl orange.

Project description:Methyl orange (MO) is mutagenic, poisonous, and carcinogenic in nature, hence, effective methods are required for its degradation. We have synthesized pure ZrO2, Ag-doped ZrO2, and Ag-doped ZrO2/rGO as hybrid photocatalysts by facile hydrothermal method. These photocatalysts were characterized by powder XRD, scanning electron microscopy, EDX, FTIR, photoluminescence, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (DRS), and Raman spectroscopy. The photodegradation of MO (10 ppm) was studied with pure ZrO2, Ag-doped ZrO2, and Ag-doped ZrO2/rGO (10 mg/100 mL catalyst dosage) photocatalysts at 100 min irradiation time under UV-Visible light. The pH effect and catalyst dosage on photodegradation of MO was investigated. Ag0.04ZrO2/rGO photocatalyst exhibited the maximum photocatalytic degradation of MO (87%) as compared to Ag0.04ZrO2 (60%) and pure ZrO2 (26%). Reusability experiments ensured the excellent stability of photocatalyst after five consecutive experiments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the facile hydrothermal synthesis of Ag0.04ZrO2/rGO photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange.

Novel organic assisted Ag-ZnO photocatalyst for atenolol and acetaminophen photocatalytic degradation under visible radiation: performance and reaction mechanism.

Project description:This study is on photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical residues of atenolol (ATL) and acetaminophen (ACT) present in secondary effluent under visible light irradiation stimulated by Ag doped ZnO (Ag-ZnO) photocatalyst. Lawsonia inermis leaf extract was used for reduction of Zinc sulphate to ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). Further, ZnO NPs were doped with Ag and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDX, surface area analyzer, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence spectrometry to analyze the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and optical property. FT-IR analysis revealed major functional groups such as OH, C=O, and SEM analysis depicted the polyhedron shape of the NPs with size range of 100 nm. Ag-ZnO NPs were used in the photocatalytic degradation of ATL and ACT, and its removal was evaluated by varying initial contaminant concentration, catalyst dosage, and initial pH. Findings indicate that Ag-ZnO NPs demonstrated relative narrow bandgap and efficient charge separation that resulted in enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination. The photocatalytic degradation of ATL and ACT fitted well with pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Further, it was found that under optimal conditions of 5 mg/L of contaminants, pH of 8.5, and catalyst dose of 1 g/L, degradation efficiency of 70.2% (ATL) and 90.8% (ACT) was achieved for a reaction time of 120 min. More than 60% reduction in TOC was observed for both contaminants and OH• pathway was found to be the major removal process. Ag-ZnO photocatalyst showed good recycling performance, and these findings indicate that it could be cost effectively employed for removing emerging contaminants under visible light radiation.

Visible-light photocatalytic performance, recovery and degradation mechanism of ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI composite.

Project description:The ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (x : 3 : 1) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, ICP-AES, XPS, UV-vis DRS, PL and VSM. Nitrogen-containing dye RhB was used as a degradation substrate to evaluate the photocatalytic degradation activities of the samples. The photocatalytic performance of Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) is superior to other Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (x : 3 : 1). Compared with binary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr (0.5 : 1) prepared in our previous work, the Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) has obvious advantages in photocatalytic activity and adsorption capacity. And the specific surface area (48.30 m2 g-1) is much larger than that of the previous report (Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.5 : 2 : 2)) synthesized by a co-precipitation method. Besides, after 25 s of magnetic field, Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) can be rapidly separated from water. After eight recycling cycles, the magnetic properties, photocatalytic activity, crystallization and morphology of the Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) catalyst remain good. The possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RhB under Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) photocatalyst was also proposed. The results indicate that the ternary magnetic Fe3O4/BiOBr/BiOI (0.4 : 3 : 1) composite with high photocatalytic degradation efficiency, good magnetic separation performance and excellent recyclability and stability has potential application prospect in wastewater.

Photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange by CeO2 and Fe-doped CeO2 films under visible light irradiation.

Project description:Undoped CeO2 and 0.50-5.00 mol% Fe-doped CeO2 nanoparticles were prepared by a homogeneous precipitation combined with homogeneous/impreganation method, and applied as photocatalyst films prepared by a doctor blade technique. The superior photocatalytic performances of the Fe-doped CeO2 films, compared with undoped CeO2 films, was ascribed mainly to a decrease in band gap energy and an increase in specific surface area of the material. The presence of Fe(3+) as found from XPS analysis, may act as electron acceptor and/or hole donor, facilitating longer lived charge carrier separation in Fe-doped CeO2 films as confirmed by photoluminescence spectroscopy. The 1.50 mol% Fe-doped CeO2 film was found to be the optimal iron doping concentration for MO degradation in this study.

Performance evaluation of Zr(CUR)/NiCo2S4/CuCo2S4 and Zr(CUR)/CuCo2S4/Ag2S composites for photocatalytic degradation of the methyl parathion pesticide using a spiral-shaped photocatalytic reactor.

Project description:Zr(CUR)/NiCo2S4/CuCo2S4 and Zr(CUR)/CuCo2S4/Ag2S ternary composites were synthesized as efficient photocatalysts, and well characterized through XRD, FTIR, DRS, FE-SEM, EDS, and EDS mapping techniques. The potential of a spiral-shaped photocatalytic reactor was evaluated for degradation of the methyl parathion (MP) pesticide using synthesized photocatalysts under visible light irradiation. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied for analysis of the hydrodynamics behaviour and mass transport occurring inside the reactor. The experiments were performed based on a developed CCD-RSM model, while the desirability function (DF) was used for optimization of the process. Findings showed that the highest MP degradation percentage was 98.70% at optimal operating values including 20 mg L-1, 0.60 g L-1, 8 and 40 min for MP concentration, catalyst dosage, pH, and reaction time, respectively. This study clearly demonstrated that high degradation efficiency can be achieved using a spiral-shaped photocatalytic reactor rather than a traditional annular reactor at same conditions. The increase in reaction rate is related to the higher average turbulence kinetic energy in the spiral-shaped reactor over the traditional reactor, which results in the increased diffusivity and improves the mass and momentum transfer.

ZnO/Boron Nitride Quantum Dots Nanocomposites for the Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Methyl Orange.

Project description:In this study, a heterostructure photocatalyst of ZnO nanoparticles decorated with boron nitride quantum dots (ZnO/BNQDs) was successfully synthesized by a simple solution procedure. The synthesized ZnO/BNQDs show that the BNQDs effectively suppress the recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes and the transfer of holes from ZnO nanoparticles by the formation of a heterojunction. The ZnO/BNQD nanocomposites thus demonstrate superior photocatalytic performances and excellent stability for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) under UV light irradiation. Based on the obtained results, the possible photocatalytic mechanism is proposed and discussed. Thus, the ZnO/BNQD nanocomposites demonstrate potential as an efficient low-cost photocatalyst for application in the photodegradation of organic dyes in wastewater for environmental remediation.

Excellent UV-Light Triggered Photocatalytic Performance of ZnO.SiO2 Nanocomposite for Water Pollutant Compound Methyl Orange Dye.

Project description:The photocatalytic activity of eco-friendly zinc oxide doped silica nanocomposites, synthesized via a co-precipitation method followed by heat-treatment at 300, 600, and 900 °C is investigated. The samples have been characterized by employing X-ray diffraction method, and further analyzed using the Rietveld Refinement method. The samples show a space group P63mc with hexagonal structure. The prepared composites are tested for their photocatalytic activities for the degradation of methyl orange-based water pollutants under ultra-violet (UV) irradiation using a 125 W mercury lamp. A systematic analysis of parameters such as the irradiation time, pH value, annealing temperatures, and the concentration of sodium hydroxide impacting the degradation of the methyl orange (MO) is carried out using UV-visible spectroscopy. The ZnO.SiO2 nanocomposite annealed at 300 °C at a pH value of seven shows a maximum photo-degradation ability (~98.1%) towards methyl orange, while the photo-degradation ability of ZnO.SiO2 nanocomposites decreases with annealing temperature (i.e., for 600 and 900 °C) due to the aspect ratio. Moreover, it is seen that with increment in the concentration of the NaOH (i.e., from 1 to 3 g), the photo-degradation of the dye component is enhanced from 20.9 to 53.8%, whereas a reverse trend of degradation ability is observed for higher concentrations.
